About the author
Jess Michaels is a USA Today Bestselling Author who likes geeky stuff like Star Wars, playing video games, Bob’s Burgers and collecting POPs! She also drinks a LOT of Diet Coke. Probably an unhealthy amount, but it’s her only vice. She will eat (almost) anything coconut, truly anything cheesy and nothing spicy (yes, she is a walking stereotype when it comes to that). She likes cats, her dog Elton and people who care about the welfare of their fellow humans.
Although she started out traditionally published by Avon/HarperCollins, Pocket, Hachette and Samhain Publishing, in 2015 she went fully indie and has never looked back! She is lucky enough to be married to her favorite person in the world and live tucked between the ocean and the mountains in Oregon.
When she’s not watching Our Flag Means Death or trying out all the new flavors of Greek yogurt, she writes historical romances with amazing heroes and sassy heroines who do anything but wait to get what they want.

Pippa was the second Mrs. Montgomery, and she has so much more to her story, Erasmus had moved his true love into her home under the guise she was Pippa’s maid and then conceived a child with the “maid.” Once Erasmus and the maid took off, Pippa was left raising her husband's love child. Talk about a scandal, but Pippa’s heart is too big to let a small baby pay for his father’s sins.
Pippa is a strong, intelligent woman that understands what is expected of her and hasn’t experienced much kindness. Her parents only used her as a stepping stool to climb the social ladder, her husband had his lover living in her house while caring for his love child, the only people she has are the ones affected by the scandal. Rhys, Owen, Gilmore, Celeste, Abigail, and dear sweet Kenley.
Rhys is still cleaning up his brother’s messes and the next mess to clear is in Bath. Rhys must clear up Erasmus’ debts and decide what to do with Kenley (and Pippa for that matter). Rhys needs to repair his family's name and that won’t be easy especially with the fireworks exploding around him and Pippa like it’s the Fourth of July. Pippa understands that she cannot drag Rhys further into scandal by being with him, he will never be able to clear his family’s name if he is forever tied to her and his brother’s son. Maybe just a little taste would be okay...right? What could go wrong?
The Defiant wife caused me to tear up twice, these two characters’ just had so much pain and both were so intent on doing what is right at the expense of their hearts. It was heartbreaking at moments. Once again, I stayed up well past my bedtime quickly turning the pages needing to know how Rhys and Pippa would end up, and what of baby Kenley. There is suspense, love, friendship, and more twists to the story. Pippa and Rhys’ story was beautiful and the HEA hard earned but so worth it! I can’t wait for the last installment to see how Abigail and Gilmore fall. This book/series gets all my recommendations.
Three women are married to the same man who is now dead. They find out and become friends. His second wife begins a relationship with his brother and this is scandalous. They must choose between love or a worse scandal.
When Pippa Montgomery found out her late husband was a bigamist and had been murdered, she thought nothing could ever be the same. When she met his brother Rhys, the Earl of Leighton, she was sure of it.
Now they must navigate a scandal that will tear them both apart. They must make decisions that will affect the illegitimate child Pippa’s late husband fathered behind her back. And ultimately they must fight, for as long as they can, the simmering desire between them that is bound to explode.
Two people, broken by a desperate scandal. They can only turn to each other, but they know they can never be together. Will they overcome the obstacles in their way and find a way to love one another? Or will the last consequence of one man’s conduct be the loss of a love that could last all time?
Rhys is my new prince charming. He is gorgeous! Sweet, generous, with so much love to give. He is trying to made amends for his brother’s sins. Including his second wife, Pippa. But he wants her for himself and fights his attraction for a long time. Pippa is so brave and lovely. She loves his husband’s illegitimate child and would do anything to protect him. Even moving to London to rise him near the man she loves.
This story is beautiful. They keep fighting their love in order to save the Leighton tittle. But what's life if not a loving journey? There amazing kisses and sexy times to enjoy. For romantic hearts out there, this book is a must.
I loved the side characters and now I need Abigail and Gilmore’s story.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Phillipa is looking after little Kenley to whom she’s grown very close.
Returning to Bath with Rhys Montgomery, the Earl of Leighton, she finds her parents disowning her and previous friends hissing her out of stores. Regency Society it seems is not ready for women tricked into marriage, even though they too have been mislead. Bit perhaps that’s the problem and their ire needs a focus.
Rhys is trying to clean up the mess his half brother has left behind. Is Phillipa part of that mess, a distraction or more? If not a distraction then the sooner they go their seperate ways the better.
Maybe! Given their rather steamy relationship things really need to turn around. All in all a conundrum.
A truly interesting concept but I found Lord Leighton a tad flat despite all that he does and is.
Although a stand alone, I’m disappointed I didn’t read the first title in the series. I think that would’ve given me a more rounded understanding, more of the back story.

The trouble with writing a period story is being consistent with the language used, 20th-21st century idioms and slang rather spoil the effect.
I don't expect slavish research but moden words or recent Ameican usage in speech rather spoils the flow.
