"AMAZING ... especially if you're a "Little Mermaid" fan, which I totally am." -- Heidi McLaughlin, New York Times bestselling author
From New York Times bestselling author Katy Regnery comes a new twist on a beloved fairytale.
In this modern retelling of The Little Mermaid, a fisherman's daughter from an Outer Banks island untouched by time, meets the son of the North Carolina governor at a fancy party where she is working. Laire, who wants more from life than her little island can offer, is swept away by wealthy, sophisticated Erik, who is, in turn, entranced by her naiveté and charm. The two spend a whirlwind summer together that ends on the knife-point of heartbreak and forces them to go their separate ways.
Years later, when fate finds them together once again, they will discover the terrifying depth of the secrets they kept from each other, and learn that shattered hearts can only be healed by a love that willfully refuses to die.

This story is a modern retelling of The Little Mermaid. Laire is a daughter of a fisherman from the Outer Banks. Laire grew up sheltered within a small community with her father and two sisters. He was expected to pick a nice island boy, marry and raise nice little island children but Laire has bigger dreams. She wants to get off the island, move to a big city and become a successful fashion designer. One summer Laire met Erik, a son of North Carolina’s governor. The love birds spent a whirlwind summer sneaking around together trying to escape the town gossip and their family’s disapproval. Erik knows in his heart that Laire is the one but unfortunately his fate was decided by someone else. I really feel bad for Laire – for the cruel treatment from Erik’s family who believes that social status is most important. They have bigger plans for Erik – to follow his father’s footstep and to marry well. The summer romance was short lived and by the end of it their hearts were irrevocably broken.
Several years later, fate leads Erik and Laire back together - broken hearted but both are older and wiser. How have they been all these years? Slowly, all the misunderstandings and secrets come to light. Can Erik and Laire find in their heart to forgive, restore faith, trust each other and fall in love again?
Don’t Speak is a gorgeous love story. The first part of the book tells a story when Erik and Laire were young, free and in love so it was mostly light-hearted, sexy, cute, and fun. As the story progress, it was harder and harder to read. I was crying my eyes out during the events that lead up to how their summer ended. The cruel, unfair circumstances that Laire had to suffer – it really gutted my heart. Laire is so innocent, sweet, beautiful, honest and she deserves so much more. I adore Erik – he is handsome, charming, fun and has a big heart. He is nothing like his selfish parents. I especially love the commitment Erik has for Laire – he always believes that Laire is his forever and he never forgets that. The second part when they met again there was more heart breaking (especially the letters – it was all too much for me ). I was devastated for both of them. But if anything, Erik and Laire made me believe in faith and destiny and that everlasting love does exist despite any distance or barriers. Love will find a way.
This book is truly a masterpiece – a beautiful tale of 2 young lovers from the opposite tracks who found friendship and everlasting love. I find this fairytale story stunning - a bit haunting, emotional, heartbreaking, but at the same time soul healing, passionate and oh so romantic. I can’t wait for you all to read it!
As always, Katy is donating part of her royalties for a good cause. I adore this woman – she is one of my very favorite authors. THANK YOU KATY!!!
Corey is an isolated fishing village with it's own unique culture and beliefs. Right away I noticed the language/manner of speaking will take someone getting used to. I can get the fact that outsiders will have a difficulty understanding that. Laire is ambitious and a dreamer ever since wanting to have more than her island life. Our heroine is very relatable in her plight to want more even in her circumstances, everyone has their own dreams that isn't always within reach. I like her drive how far she'll go to achieve that is something else. She's also very sheltered in a way that makes her naive to some things, but with her open earnestness. She needed that huge push to step out which came in the form of our young Erik.
When she and Erik first met it's very obvious they are from different worlds. Erik and his upperclass class family, being governor's son and his aptly named mom Ursula. As a character I really liked him, his family might be influential but he would be happy to be normal. He has charm and irresistible way about him. It was telling that he and Laire developed a kinship based on the wanting to be different from family expectations and finding it hard to break from that.
Some elements stand out and are very reminiscent of original fairy tale. With all the major characters on our Laire (Ariel), King Tritron (seafood), Erik, Sebastian and so forth. I really liked the little elements like Ms. Sebastian and how she became vital and much like the beloved character a bestfriend/mother-like support to Laire.
This unlikely couple with their undeniable attraction and chemistry that lead to a summer affair. There is more to that though with things yet to be discovered. When our young lovers encounter rough seas will they get swept away by the strong current and will the tides change for them eventually?
I had a feeling this is where the story was headed. While I wasn't keen on the why, they got caught up in everything. They drifted away for a while and landed a shore after some time. Just a minor setback. In a way it's a necessary interlude that had to happen eventually, it helped plot move along which I can appreciate. They both needed that time to evolve and grow up. That initial spark that was there before is still very much alive when their paths cross again. What happens next when they find out the reality of it all? I certainly loved the character growth in this book. While I wasn't sure how much I'd like it safe to say that it was delightfully better than I expected. Getting through all the hurdles and obstacles in their way Laire and Erik are now parts of each others world. The way the story came together is lovely and it's really sweet.
Katy Regnery has written a beautifully inspired modern fairytale which captures the essence and nuances of the original yet adding a refreshing whimsical twist to it. Her characters will enthrall you and keep you immersed into the story. A must read if you're a Little Mermaid or modern fairytale fan. A timeless kind of love story that had the right amount of emotion and romance. Another wonderful addition to this series!

Every story Katy writes seeps into my soul and carries me through every journey her characters take, like I'm there, living it myself. Right from page one, I'm one with the story.
This story she tells is of love and loss, devastation, deception, conception, lies and loneliness, and finding each other again.
One beautiful summer, a young girl ,a fisherman's daughter, a young boy a governors son, fall in love. There's no way they can share it with anyone else, no one can find out about them because no one would approve or understand. Summer comes to an end and their last night together ends in devastation, lives are torn apart, shattered hearts. Lies, and Broken Promises keep them apart.
Years pass but their love for one another never fades. It will never fade.
but Katy turns the ship around and ads some serious sadness. and the heroin grows stronger as the book goes on. so in the end Katy won one more star.
