About the author
Douglas Skelton has published 12 non fiction books, 12 contemporary crime thrillers and 2 historical thrillers. He has been a bank clerk, tax officer, shelf stacker, meat porter, taxi driver (for two days), wine waiter (for two hours), reporter, investigator and editor.
His first thriller BLOOD CITY was published in 2013.
The gritty thriller was the first in a quartet set on the tough streets of Glasgow from 1980 onwards. It was followed by CROW BAIT, DEVIL'S KNOCK and finally OPEN WOUNDS, which was longlisted for the first McIlvanney Prize for Scottish Crime Book of the Year in 2016.
His two Dominic Queste thrillers, THE DEAD DON'T BOOGIE and TAG - YOU'RE DEAD lightened the tone but didn't skimp on thrills.
He followed this with his New York-set chase thriller THE JANUS RUN in 2018.
THUNDER BAY, a dark and atmospheric tale of secrets, lies and murder, was published to great acclaim by Polygon in 2019. It was longlisted for the McIlvanney Prize for 2019. The series continued with THE BLOOD IS STILL, A RATTLE OF BONES ( longlisted for the McIlvanney in 2022) and WHERE DEMONS HIDE. All four titles have been released on audio by Isis Publishing. Entries in the series are available in the US in print and audio through Arcade CrimeWise, while translation rights have been sold to as Germany, Denmark, Greece and Sweden.
The 5th in the series, CHILDREN OF THE MIST, has now been published.
He also has a new series of historical adventure thrillers featuring gambler, thief and secret agent Jonas Flynt, beginning with AN HONOURABLE THIEF (2022, CANELO, longlisted for the McIlvanney Prize 2023) and A THIEF'S JUSTICE (Canelo 2023).
Douglas is often recruited by documentary makers to contribute to true crime shows on TV and radio and is a regular on the crime writing festival circuit.
He takes part in comedy shows with other crime writers. To date he has written three Carry on Sleuthing plays in which he also appears along with Caro Ramsay, Michael J. Malone, Theresa Talbot, Pat Young and Lucy Cameron, with occasional guests Alex Gray, Lin Anderson and Neil Broadfoot.
He is also one quarter of Four Blokes in search of a Plot, along with Gordon Brown, Mark Leggatt and Neil Broadfoot. This is a fun show in which they invited the audience to give them a murder weapon and a protagonist. They then take it in turns to create a crime story (usually developing into something wild and wacky) while also answering audience queries about the craft.
His one man event, You the Jury, invites audiences to deliver verdicts on real life but heavily disguised cases from around the world. In 2019 the format was extended into a court drama, thanks to the Faculty of Advocates in Scotland, within Stirling Sheriff Court played to three sell-out houses during the Bloody Scotland festival.
He was, with bestselling author Denzil Meyrick, a regular on the SBOOKS podcast.

Well holy-bloody-cow! This book was fabulous!! I cannot believe it had been on my TBR pile for so long! This is the first book I have read by Scottish author Douglas Skelton, but it will not be the last!
This was proper gritty, gangland, take-no-sh*t writing at it’s finest. A fast-paced crime thriller that leaves you breathless. The momentum is steady throughout but really picks up towards the end and I literally could not put this book down.
I loved the characters in this book too, and their names were class! Scrapper, Skooshie, Maw Jarvis to name a few. But Davie McCall was the one that kept me turning the pages for sure. Dark, dangerous and unpredictable — this guy utterly fascinated me. There was also a vulnerable side that came through, especially when it came to Vari and when Davie was having flashbacks about someone from his past. I was drawn in quite quickly and think he may well be my new fictional crush…every girl likes a bad boy…whether they admit it or not. I may not want to marry his type but I certainly want to read about him!
This was the third in the Davie McCall Saga and I will definitely be reading Blood City and Crow Bait. It may explain a few things that came up in this book. Would I suggest they are read in order…on reflection, yes…but it is a great story in it’s own right and I did not feel like I could not follow the story. Sure, some of the surprises may be lost, but if they are half as good as this book I know I will not be disappointed!
There was absolutely nothing I did not like about this book! The cover was fab! The story was amazing and the characters were solid. I look forward to reading the first two books and will definitely be reading more from this author in the future!

So, Davie's world gets darker, he is drawn into more violence when revenge rears its ugly head. Despite his best effort to steer clear of the heavy stuff, to abide by his own code, circumstance, reputation and connection just keep on dragging him back.
Again, the book is crammed with action, this time more violent than previous books but this is in keeping with the escalation on the streets with the prevalence of drugs and gangs so it didn't seem out of pace.
It still sits a little uncomfortable rooting for a baddie, especially with what he seems to be getting involved with in this book, but he is still trying to keep the dark at bay and abide by his code so he is still worth he benefit of the doubt and, let's face it, everyone loves a bad boy!
The dialogue and language in this books is at just as high a standard as the first two, vernacular is easily worked out from context or looked up and there is some great banter between the characters. The Setting, Glasgow, is almost a character in its own right so strong the part it plays in the book, In reading the first three books, we see the degeneration of the City, How drugs, gangs and guns are becoming more widespread as time goes on.
This book is a brilliant addition to the saga of Davie McCall and I really can't wait for the next one.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Gang war on the Glasgow streets of the mid1990s - once again this book just drags you screaming into the midst of the bloodshed and through the darker side of the city.
Douglas Skelton has the knack of bringing the streets and the characters alive - you feel yourself recoil in horror at the rotting corpse of a drug addict in squalor and drawn to the inner turmoil of Davie McCall as he fights his demons. You pull your jacket tighter to keep out the bitter cold of the Glasgow streets, you smell the stale beer in the dodgy pubs where the deals are done - and you feel the pain of every victim as they meet their grisly end.
A must for fans of tartan noir, crime and Glaswegian crime in particular - a well deserved 5 stars!
Catching up on Davie McCall who has the nack of being a baddie you kinda like.
