Definitely Not Kansas is the first volume of the Nocturnia Cycle, a series for both adults and young readers, middle grades and up. Two remarkable, adventuresome kids—Emma and Ryan—discover a parallel world that is the source of all our most well-known monsters. Werewolves, vampires, mummies, trolls, zombies? Certainly. But the world of Nocturnia is also home to some more esoteric creatures such as Rakshasa, Djinni, Ethereals, and the Silent Ones. Welcome to Nocturnia, where the monsters have their own nation states and humans are either slaves, or food, or both. Where even the flowers will suck your blood if you venture near. Emma and Ryan have followed the trail of their missing older brother, Telly. When they discover that Telly is not only in Nocturnia, but also involved with the one entity that could bring an end to the human world, Emma and Ryan begin a desperate search to find him and escape the parallel world of nightmares. As they search, they come to suspect that they did not arrive in Nocturnia by accident. But if not, why are they here? Are their destinies somehow entwined with this nightmare world?

I enjoyed the book but was sorely unimpressed by the proof reading. So many typing errors that I had to re-read sentences to make sense of them. "If's" that should have been "it", words spelled wrong and I am not talking about the ones intentionally misspoken by the Troll. Hopefully next installment will be proof read better.

It is interesting to note that the people here seem to be in other works of F. Paul Wilson. Makes for interesting plot changes because just when you think you get ahead, because you know these characters from other works, BAM, YOU AIN'T IN KANSAS NO MORE!

Excellent book. Well-written, with an engaging storyline. I really enjoyed this and immediately started book 2. The world developed is so vivid that you can imagine it as if you were there. It also is a great portrayal of what things could be like if we were not at the the top of the food chain.

I have been a huge FP Wilson fan for decades, and have read most of his published material. This includes not only FPW's solo work that comprises not only the awesome and by now, classic Adversary Cycle and Repairman Jack books, but also several other single novels and anthologies. With few exceptions (including the YA or "Teen Repairmen Jack" trilogy, I have found in Wilson one of my all-time favorite authors.

More recently, I have been working my way through FPW's collaborative novels and novellas, with varying degrees of enjoyment. I very much enjoyed FIX, a Repairman Jack long novella co-written with JA Konrath (with whose work I was already familiar) and Ann Peterson (new to me), and laughed all the way through DRACULAS, coauthored with Konrath, Blake Crouch (who after this, became another fave), and J Strand. On the other hand, I did not very much like another RJ short story, INFERNAL NIGHT, co-authored with Heather Graham, and in my review of the stand alone novel, THE PROTEUS CURE, co-written with Tracy Carbone I wrote, "I prefer my FP Wilson straight".

DEFINITELY NOT KANSAS is the first of a NOCTURNIA trilogy written by FPW and Thomas Monteleone. Most of it takes place in a parallel earth (Nocturnia) that is literally the stuff of nightmares and horror tales. It is populated by tools, vampires, mummies, werewolves etc., and humans are bred to be slaves or bothered for meat or worse. The protagonists are a precocious 11 year old boy and his 13 year old sister who are unknowingly transported to Nocturnia while searching for their older teen-aged brother by some sort of mysterious collaboration between an Earthly mad scientist and his Nocturne counterpart. The collaboration between FPW and Monteleone is seamless, and although it clearly contains elements of FPW, it does not read like an FPW novel, although the collaboration is clearly more successful that was the case with PROTEUS or INFERNAL NIGHT, for example..

As the first of a trilogy, there is much left unexplained, as is natural. What came as a surprise to me was the level at which the story is pitched. After seeing it advertised by FPW many times over the last 3 or 4 years as a YA novel suitable for adults, I imagined the JACK:YOUNG ADULT SERIES that indeed was a YA series that was very enjoyable for YA like myself who are in their 7th decade of life. But DEFINITELY NOT KANSAS is NOT a YA novel, at least the way I understand the term. It is a children's book, written for kids roughly between 9 and 14. The plot is very simple (although still filled with mysterious goings-on, betrayal, heroes and villains etc.) and the writing and vocabulary appropriate for the age range given above. This is in contrast to the JACK:YOUNG ADULT SERIES, other YA novels and series (e.g., TWILIGHT) that are written with an older audience in mind. Overall, for an adult, I thought it was just OK. If I were 11 or 12 years old, I might rate it higher. All that being said, I am still curious to see where this is going and will be reading the rest of the series. I just thought the veteran FPW reader ought to know what he is in for.

Why you use them all seems the easy and quick answer.

The book is a fun read introducing Nocturnia and setting up the next books but I'll wait until the next book before I give a true Review.

Reminiscent of his pre-quell Jack series where Repairman Jack is a little boy. Easy read, did it in 2 nights, but in my opinion not geared for the younger reader. Too much going on. Characters are likeable. I was sad to reach the end and definitely wanted more. Look forward to the next 2 volumes.

Its a pretty good story. If you're a F. Paul Wilson fan sure, give it a read.

Another well written book that has F Paul Wilson's hand print on it. I must also say he along with Thomas Montelone have produced a wonderful and fascinating book. Can hardly wait to read the next installment.
