When Jane Roberts is found dead in a woodland area Detective Sergeant Laura McGanity is first on the scene. The body bears a chilling similarity to a woman -Deborah Corley -murdered three weeks earlier. Both have been stripped, strangled and defiled. When reporter Jack Garrett starts digging for dirt on the notorious Whitcroft estate, he finds himself face-to-face with Jane's father and gangland boss Don who will stop at nothing until justice is done. It seems that the two murdered women were linked in more ways than one and a dirty secret is about to surface that some would prefer stay buried. As the killer circles once more, Jack and Laura must get to him before he strikes again. But his sights are set on his next victim and he's watching Laura's every move...

I am a criminal lawyer and I am a bestselling British crime fiction author. I try to write books I enjoy, which are fast-paced, page-turning thrillers, often with a legal angle.
My books include the Jack Garrett and Laura McGanity series, the Parker brothers trilogy, and the Dan Grant trilogy. My latest book is The Photograph, released in 2023.
When I'm not writing or doing legal work, you'll find me watching rugby league or Netflix, or reading (of course).
I hope you enjoy the books.

The killer degrades and defiles these women. He vitiates them, but why?
As different parts of the plot are absorbed into each other and everything becomes clearer the reader feels repugnance towards the killer. There are even hints of an uncomfortable – although unenlightened - Jocasta complex.
The plot takes us back to 1976 and although in real life we imagine no one will recall events almost 40 years ago, we do. As Jack sets off to interview club doormen to see if they’ve anything to add to the mystery, I found myself recalling that I myself worked the doors in the late 70’s and early 80’s, and those memories are still clear as day.
This book is a good conundrum, and I’d recommend it. Well deserving of four stars.
Despite some references, Jack Garrett is really the main character with Laura McGanity (who has been promoted to DS) a close second. In the previous three books (I don't recall the first one) Jack was written in the first person but here he is in the third person.

Two murders have taken place in the northern town of Blackley, and the police realise they could have a potential serial killer on their hands; however, is there a connection between the two women, one the daughter of a police officer, the other of the local "crime lord"..... McGainty and her team undertake the formal investigation, whilst Garrett, having orininally been tasked with writing a story on the blight of northern towns, starts to use his own methods to investigate the crime in a different way, that only a journalist can.
Well written, graphic (certainly the last 40 or so pages are not for the feint-hearted), the novel is certainly a "page turner". Characters are well developed, and have certainly moved on from the last Neil White I read (the excellent Last Rites ). There are a number of twists and turns in the story to keep you guessing as to who the killer is, and why he selected his victims, so all in all a decent read.

It turns out that this is the fifth in a series featuring DC Laura McGanity and reporter Jack Garrett, but it's self-contained and you don't need to have read the others. This is the cheapest of the series but they're all reasonably priced and I've already bought the first (Fallen Idol) to start catching up.
The police investigation is led by the lugubrious and splenetic Inspector Carson, assisted by Sergeant Laura McGanity. Things are complicated by the fact that she lives with Jack Garrett, leading reporter for the local paper.
As more attacks are reported, the local underworld boss has his thugs out looking for revenge. Can the police find their man before he is "offed" by local hoodlums? Can Garrett get a story without compromising McGanity?
Neil White manages the multiple plot streams admirably, and the reader's attention never flags.
