A real authentic crime thriller with believable characters. The pace moves along nicely, keeping the reader interested and looking for what comes next. The team of freelance reporter Jack Garrett and his lover, D.S.Laura McGanity works very well, their independant enquiries and investigations, though separate come together perfectly. The true identity of the killer was kept hidden for a long time and not all was exactly as it seemed. Being a Lancastriam, I enjoyed the northern town descriptions, especially the description of Cleveleys, which lies just two miles from my home in Poulton-:e-Fylde and a place I visit regularly. Well written and readers may like my eBooks under the name of Bill Franks: #Iniquity,' 'Jesuit' etc.

I enjoyed this one. There was a certain amount of intrigue to the plot and that made it very interesting.

Cold Kill kept me on the edge of my seat because although we’re ‘kind of’ introduced to the killer early on we’re not really sure, and we’re certainly unclear about his inclinations. The women he murders appear to be more than just random picks, but what’s the connection? Is there a connection at all? There’s something there, but we don’t know what. And who’s the mysterious Emma?

The killer degrades and defiles these women. He vitiates them, but why?

As different parts of the plot are absorbed into each other and everything becomes clearer the reader feels repugnance towards the killer. There are even hints of an uncomfortable – although unenlightened - Jocasta complex.

The plot takes us back to 1976 and although in real life we imagine no one will recall events almost 40 years ago, we do. As Jack sets off to interview club doormen to see if they’ve anything to add to the mystery, I found myself recalling that I myself worked the doors in the late 70’s and early 80’s, and those memories are still clear as day.

This book is a good conundrum, and I’d recommend it. Well deserving of four stars.

This book appears to mark the end of the series, as the author has moved on to write other books including a new series. It has what could be considered a concluding scene at the end but nothing that would prevent the author from writing more.

Despite some references, Jack Garrett is really the main character with Laura McGanity (who has been promoted to DS) a close second. In the previous three books (I don't recall the first one) Jack was written in the first person but here he is in the third person.

I though this book would be a good read but boy oh boy was I wrong it was boring predictable one dimensional characters a story that ad no surprises or twists or turns we find the killers name on the first page the characters seemed uninteresting and as the book went on we found out nothing about them overall if I could give it half a star or less I would in short don't waste your time with this trash

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast Paced Crime Novel
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 2, 2011
This is the fifth Neil White book and once again features the police officer Laura McGainty and her boyfriend Jack Garrett; in previous novels the latter has been the main character, but in this instance, the story is well balanced between the two, and if anything, their is more weight given to the former.

Two murders have taken place in the northern town of Blackley, and the police realise they could have a potential serial killer on their hands; however, is there a connection between the two women, one the daughter of a police officer, the other of the local "crime lord"..... McGainty and her team undertake the formal investigation, whilst Garrett, having orininally been tasked with writing a story on the blight of northern towns, starts to use his own methods to investigate the crime in a different way, that only a journalist can.

Well written, graphic (certainly the last 40 or so pages are not for the feint-hearted), the novel is certainly a "page turner". Characters are well developed, and have certainly moved on from the last Neil White I read (the excellent
Last Rites ). There are a number of twists and turns in the story to keep you guessing as to who the killer is, and why he selected his victims, so all in all a decent read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written, well researched - gripping.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 25, 2011
This is an excellent read. It's a long book but the chapters are short and the pace never flags, as the author reveals one twist after another, all of them believeable, right up to the end. The story is told from three perspectives - a detective, her journalist boyfriend and the (anonymous) murderer - and these are distinct, balanced and flow together well. The author has a very good writing style, clear and easy to read yet capable of projecting real menace in some of the nastier scenes. There's also a ring of authenticity to the police procedural bits (the author is a solicitor, and clearly knows how the system works), which makes it a satisfying read. 100% recommended if you like British crime novels.

It turns out that this is the fifth in a series featuring DC Laura McGanity and reporter Jack Garrett, but it's self-contained and you don't need to have read the others. This is the cheapest of the series but they're all reasonably priced and I've already bought the first (Fallen Idol) to start catching up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another gripping thriller from White
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 23, 2012
An enjoyable, gritty murder story set in the fictitious town of Backley in Yorkshire. It starts with the apparently motiveless murder of Jane Roberts, a young attractive woman, though it later transpires that her father is the local underworld boss. It also quickly becomes apparent that this murder matches an earlier one in which the daughter of a police officer from the same town had been killed.
The police investigation is led by the lugubrious and splenetic Inspector Carson, assisted by Sergeant Laura McGanity. Things are complicated by the fact that she lives with Jack Garrett, leading reporter for the local paper.
As more attacks are reported, the local underworld boss has his thugs out looking for revenge. Can the police find their man before he is "offed" by local hoodlums? Can Garrett get a story without compromising McGanity?
Neil White manages the multiple plot streams admirably, and the reader's attention never flags.
