When Jesus said to Nicodemus, 'You must be born again', the devout and learned religious leader was unsure what Jesus meant. It would seem nothing has changed. Today 'born again Christians' fill churches that are seen as ineffectual at best, and even characterised by the 'mosaic' generation as 'unchristian'.

The term 'born again' has been devalued both in society and in the church. Those claiming to be 'born again' live lives that are indistinguishable from those who don't; they sin the same, embrace injustice the same, covet the same, do almost everything the same.

Being 'born again' is now defined by what people say they believe. The New Testament however defines Christians very differently.

"When Jesus said to Nicodemus, "You must be born again" (John 3:7), he was not sharing interesting and unimportant information. He was leading him to eternal life. If he does that for you (or if he already has), then you are (or you will be) truly, invincibly, finally alive." John Piper

Editorial Reviews

Review

"For those curious about the Christian faith to those deeply committed to Christ and his ways, come read and behold the glory of any and every sinner's only hope-the miracle of the new birth that brings forth new life in Christ that will never end."

-- Bruce Ware, Professor of Christian Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky (Professor of Christian Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky & author of 'Big Truths for Young Hearts')

"Have I been born again? is not a question to be answered hastily. In this book, Piper strips away our complacency, arguing that many people falsely believe they are Christians. By examining the Bible's teaching on the new birth, he shows us how to be certain our faith is genuine. Because no issue could be more critical, I believe this is the most important book Piper has written."

-- Adrian Warnock, blogger (Author of Raised with Christ and Hope Reborn and prolific blogger at adrianwarnock.com )

"Piper sets the record straight on this oft neglected Christian truth by clearly telling us what the Bible teaches us about the New Birth: what it is, why we need it, how it comes about, what are its effects and how we can help others to be born again. This is not a book of dry doctrine. On the contrary, it is a book that leads to self-examination and God exaltation. I simply loved this book and now rank it as my favourite of Piper's and would highly recommend it to others."

-- Barnabus, Sovereign Grace Fellowship of Canada

"Expository and practical, this rich survey of New Testament teaching explores the nature of the new birth and the life which flows from it. Full of refreshment and encouragement, it reveals more deeply the glory of Christ and the gospel and motivates a renewed commitment to live out this good news and share it with others."

-- David Jackman, President of The Proclamation Trust, London (Past President, The Proclamation Trust, London)

... simply terrific. Finally Alive begins with Christ and ends with preaching Christ. It certainly moved me to keep doing that.

-- The Briefing Magazine

"When I was a boy my grandmother asked me, 'Have you been born again?' Though I didn't understand what she meant at the time, that question led to my conversion to Christ. In this wonderful book, Pastor John Piper rescues the term 'born again' from the abuse and overuse to which it is subject in our culture today. This is a fresh presentation of the evangelical doctrine of the new birth, a work filled with theological insight and pastoral wisdom."

-- Timothy George, Dean of Beeson Divinity School, Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama (Founding Dean of Beeson Divinity School, Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama)

Finally Alive: What Happens When We Are Born Again by John Piper is a marvellous description of what the Bible says it means to be born again and the life which flows from this new birth. This book is worth reading for the first chapter alone. Piper shows us how far apart the world-view of being born again and actual biblical truth has drifted in recent years. He writes: 'The term born again is very precious and very crucial in the Bible. So our main concern is to know what God intends when the Bible uses this language, so that by his grace we may experience it and help others to do the same...The beauty and glory of Christ and the gospel shine out of every page. Finally Alive is dense yet readable, challenging, encouraging and refreshing."

-- Julie Ferguson, Gilcomston South Church, Aberdeen

"I cannot too strongly celebrate the publication of this book. Owing in part to several decades of dispute over justification and how a person is set right with God, we have tended to neglect another component of conversion no less important. Conversion under the terms of the new covenant is more than a matter of position and status in Christ, though never less: it includes miraculous Spirit-given transformation, something immeasurably beyond mere human resolution. It is new birth; it makes us new creatures; it demonstrates that the gospel is the power of God unto salvation. All the creedal orthodoxy in the world cannot replace it. The reason why "You must be born again" is so important is that you must be born again."

-- D. A. Carson, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, Illinois (Emeritus Professor of New Testament, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, Illinois)

Since becoming a Christian, I have found a few - very few - books and writers who "speak" to me and who I think "get it" and, therefore, can help ME get it. John Piper is one of them. Along with favorites like Jerry Bridges, RC Sproul, and other modern Reformationists, John Piper has a knack for leading you through deep concepts to a place where you can apply them in your daily life with confidence. He lets the Word be the Word, glorifies Christ, and opens your eyes to the Father's plan of redemption, reconciliation, santification, and our ultimate glorification. In this particular book he masterfully lays out both the "burning platform" for being born again and the "compelling destination" for being born again. I love this book. I started "breezing" through it to see what it was like and became so engrossed in just a couple of hours I was deep, deep into it and praying along with John prayers of praise, gratitude, supplication, and worship.

If you are a Christian, get this book. If you are NOT a Christian, get this book. If you are not sure, get this book. After you have read it, studied it, have it well highlighted, "dog-earred" to mark favorite passages, and suitably marked up, give it to others. Pay it forward!!

The new birth is so worthy of a complete book, examining it from all angles - when, why, how, to what end, and more. This is that book. Manifestly scriptural, you can literally watch Piper's exegetical process. A little too academic for those who just want the author to tell them what to think, and a bit repetitive for folks who don't want to savor as they read. But very devotional and beautiful for anyone who's willing to take an unhurried look at the amazing work of God in every genuine believer in Christ Jesus.

This is the most wonderful book I have EVER read concerning being Born Again! This is a book I have shared with new believers that are not understanding what it means to be born again. I have shared it with 'not yet' believers, as we are talking about Christ. John Pipers book Finally Alive is a rich gift to the body of Christ. This is a book I will always be sharing with others and re-reading so I can continue mining the gold nuggets that are within it.

John Piper's work on eldership, salvation, and practical theology have shaped my beliefs as much as any other modern pastor. He is a Biblical thinker and one of the most important Christian authors in the modern era. The sheer amount of pages he has produced in his career is staggering.

Finally Alive is one of his newest, and it is a great read for new Christians. Why should we be born again? How are we born again? What is the Holy Spirit's role in salvation? These, and many more questions regarding the new birth, are answered in this short book. I thought the best part of the book was the last section on sharing the gospel, How Can We Help Others Be Born Again? His Ten Encouragements for Gospel-Telling at the end of this section are practical and were the highlight of Finally Alive.

Piper's numerous works understandably have a lot of overlap, but I think Finally Alive is one that contains enough new material to make it worth your while, even if you have read much of what he has put out already. This book is geared towards those who would like to know more about being "born again." When people ask me which Piper books I recommend reading, I always recommend The Dangerous Duty of Delight first (this is the basically the cliff notes for Desiring God), and Don't Waste Your Life next. These books are short, readable, and life-changing. While Finally Alive may not be my first recommendation, it is certainly on the short list and would be a great one to pick up.

So helpful digging into scripture. I am still struggling through these concepts but have found this book a helpful resource. Highly biblically based and not confuntational or overly opinionated. A good read for Piper fans too as this seems to be foundational for his teachings in general. Especially approximated the section at the end for practical implications of this theological stance.

In an another master piece by Piper, we are given a thorough understanding on the intricacies of new birth. I highly recommended this book for anyone who wants to understand new birth and to get inspired to lead a Christ centered life. Piper also underlines the importance of spreading the Gospel to others.

I love just about anything by John Piper. He is very enthusiastic, and truly loves the Lord God, and His Son Jesus Christ. And it shows. He wants to share that love of God with all those he can reach.

John Piper has been truly blessed in his ability to draw out the meaning of Scripture. He covers thoroughly yet succinctly how we're born again, what happens, what God does, what our response is - all with the support of Scripture.

Definitely recommended!
