I gave this one four stars only because the first novel was based on actual events and was such a tour de force. However, the writing is excellent and the plot takes a few unexpected turns to keep things interesting. Excellent author, entertaining stories, and very historically informative about the Dutch experience during and after the war.
Book two was good
Book three about halfway through I was ready for it to be done
Anya was annoying through the whole book, at the beginning I was expecting her to be going through some major mental/emotional therapy at some point, but that never happens, she never really makes any kind of breakthroughs or changes, she just kind of one day is better.
Danny has always been an upbeat lighthearted guy, but still had his serious side and was a likable characters. But in this book he was just a stupid guy making light of everything, and there was no substance to his character at all.
Danny and Anya both had been keeping a secret from each other since book 2 and at first I thought the author has forgotten about it, but when they finally did talk about their secrets, it was like, oh ok no big deal.
And another thing that bugged me was how insensitive they all were to Anyas father and Jacob. Like they just got out of a connection camp and Anya is freaking out about Jacob's manners, and acting like a spoiled brat not wanting to share her father. Then they decided to take them to see firework's?!??
Anyways there were a few good parts but mostly it was allot of repetitive stuff from the first two books, and it was allot more preachy than the first two. There was also the random side story of the rasism which was just more filler.
I was thrilled as the lot the McClain family grew. I loved the changes within Anya especially after she returned from Holland.
It pulled at maternal heartstrings and made me mushy and full of hope at the end.
