A scouting mission gone bad. A life-changing loss of time. Can a privateer team navigate a bloody revolution to find their way home?

Liam Hoffen is used to straightforward missions going off the rails. But when he emerges from a crash-landing, one look tells him he’ll need more than a simple repair job. Having spent years inadvertently trapped in stasis, life has done more than pass him by… it’s dumped his entire team into an alien revolution.

Stranded on a rugged world hundreds of thousands of light years from home, Liam and his crew are immediately swept up in incomprehensible planetary politics. Choosing the wrong side to defeat a fresh menace could be the difference between life and death.

Can Liam find a way off the planet before it becomes their final resting place?

Privateers in Exile is the 16th standalone book in the Privateer Tales series of military space operas. If you like alien firefights, galactic power-plays, and gritty heroes, then you’ll love Jamie McFarlane’s rocket-fueled adventure.

Jamie McFarlane is a graduate of Colorado School of Mines with a Master of Science in Mathematics. An avid reader, tinkerer, woodworker and metal sculptor, Jamie is just as likely to be seen smelting aluminum cans in his garage as he is tacking random, discarded iron objects into a small army of beasties that adorn his home’s landscaping.

Jamie’s writing career began as something of a dare which later turned into a tribute. In his late teens, Jamie was well known as the family story-teller, spinning fanciful yarns about ordinary events, usually with the objective of escaping well-deserved trouble. One day, his mother, often the target of his mischievous tales, challenged him to commit his words to writing. Jamie promised he would but time passed, as did his beloved mother. In 2014, Jamie made good on his promise and published his first book.

Jamie is the author of a growing library of novels and novellas of military science fiction titles including Junkyard Pirate and the Privateer Tales series.

McFarlane delivers another unforgettable book!
Privateers in Exile (Privateer Tales Book 16) is every bit the page-turner that I have come to expect from this author. Liam Hoffen and his crew fight against impossible odds and powerful forces. This installment of the Privateer Tales series certainly lived up to my expectations... superb!

This one of Janis’s best books! The creativity is unmatched in our world of Sci-fi. This could actually happen in the next 300 years!

Jamie's Privateer series as really evolved over the years from humble beginnings to far-reaching galactic warfare, exploration, political intrigue and romance. While not my favorite installment, Privateers in Exile took risks and plunged the crew in a far off star system isolated from all that came before. They are lost in time too, with some of the crew having aged while others were in stasis. Against all odds and with the help of a new alien race reminiscent of elves, they once again go up against Beleriand, a nemesis since book 4.

If you have enjoyed the series thus far, you might find this installment a bit jarring. However it still delivers on the action and character interaction you've come to know and love. I don't recommend reading this book first, start at the beginning.

The crew of hotspur get into stasis tanks thinking they're going on a rescue mission. Liam wakes up and is told hotspur crash landed on a planet called Fraxus 20 years ago (actually its been much longer because of the time spent on hotspur in stasis). How did this happen? Was it Anino's plan? How did they wind up on a planet far far from the one they were supposed to go to? And now what? With no ship they're stranded. The rest of the crew, except Ada have been living as outcasts from the Scatters (indigenous aliens), in the mountains. They think they know where Ada is so they go looking for her. Well, of course the crew goes looking for her and wind up on a rescue mission they didn't expect. It's scary that they are stranded on Fraxus where the technology is equal to earth's in maybe the 13th century. This is a great story you will enjoy, as you see how they survive and accomplish another mission; albeit on the planet without their usual assortment of tech, at least at first. Enjoy...

I've been following this series from the beginning and have loved every story. I held off writing a review of this one because it kind of annoyed me at first, I needed time to think about it.

After some consideration, I realized that our heroes were getting too good. With the technology they were acquiring, their experience and expertise, the next story would have been about how they took over the galaxy... and lived happily ever after. When I was a kid I thought Superman was kinda boring, there was never a challenge or drama. I knew he couldn't be hurt, he always won, he always saved the day and our "Loose Nuts" band were approaching a similar situation.

So... without spoilers... I'll say this story kicks the feet out from under any expected plot lines. It's like the reboot in Star Trek with the Kelvin timeline, I'm expecting the next story to be totally unpredictable but that's really not a surprise. All of McFarlane's stories, since the beginning, have been unpredictable. It's one of the things I love about them. At the beginning of this story, I thought it was going to be more of the same that's come before, it was but in a totally unexpected way.

I can't wait to see what happens next!

Well he can't just stop writing great space opera stories with Liam,Nick,Marny Tabby, Ada with the character of Peter . This story was gripping from the first page, I couldn't stop reading .it had ups and downs and was very intense in some parts.well worth the read.

I appreciate Jamie McFarlane wanting to try something different. This was a big change from many of the earlier books. Most of the Privateer books stand well on their own, even when part of a larger story arc. This one really requires prior knowledge of the character's history to really understand what is changing. I think it's this dependence or lack of internal resilience that detracted from the book for me.

For most of this series i have really felt that McFarlane is a modern day Heinlein analog. This book didn't have that feel for me. It is still good, just not as good as the others and it certainly won't stand alone.

I have been asked on numerous occasions, like ever time I finish a book, what I think. Do I like Jamie McFarlane’s work? FRAK yes! Just finished book 16 of this series, which, by the way, is sited on a planet Liam’s crew named Fraxus – you figure out what the planet is like. I don’t like to spoil things, but: imagine setting sail on an Anino constructed FTL ship (remember Hotspur? Think major upgrade) only to find that you have been locked out of the controls and after avoiding certain death only as the ship jumps, wind up waking in a long-lost stasis pod looking into the face of a young 20-something young man you remember as an infant (Little Pete). Hotspur? Lost. Your crew? All present less Ada, also lost, but 20 years older and stranded on a planet inhabited by Tolkien-like elves and controlled by Belirand bad-boys, also stranded because the planet held no economic value (no metals). That should be enough to get you started but not tarnish the joy of discovery and Liam et. al. do what they do. Thank you Jamie for what you do.

The issues with Liam and Tabby are clumsily handled and poorly resolved in my opinion. Interesting ideas of how the evil corporate guys and the indigenous population have changed to overlord and subjugated population. Too simplistic a solution to that problem tho.

This is what we call a humm-dinger of a damn good book. A great addition to the series and I can't wait for the next one! A bit different from the typical setting, but it highlights the realities of SciFi that much more. Loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story and good lead into another adventure for the House of the Bold.

I totally enjoyed reading this next step in the house of the Bold . Some loose ends in relationships seemed closed between characters but gaps in others were created. Setting up desperate starting point in the saga at this story end was disappointing. I think more was missed in the interactive opportunities with the new species and their talents to enhance the crew dynamics. A good read on its own. May be an opportunity for an authors fill in story based around natives from their viewpoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice twist to the tale

Got this with some trepidation s it looked like the story had be finished in the last book. But, as any good story teller, this goes in a new and exciting direction. Loved it from start to finish. You could read this as a separate book as a lot of the back story is filled in as much as needed for a nw reader while not boring those of us who have read the whole series. However, I would say it's best to start at the beginning and enjoy the world of Liam Hoffen in all its glory.

5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read

The author is starting again with the same crew we all know from previous books. He's reintroducing them so you don't really need to buy the previous books in the series to get to know them. As usual I read these books in short order because the story goes along at a merry pace and keeps me wanting to read. I hope you join in and try either this or book one and hopefully get hooked.
