When the simmering conflict between Rome and Persia threatens to reignite into open war, there is only one man the Emperor Constantine can trust to hold the eastern frontier. Aurelius Castus, retired general of the empire, has fought long and hard for Rome. When the summons comes to command an army once more, he obeys with a heavy heart. But is he still the fearsome fighting machine of old? As tragedy strikes the imperial household, Castus must race to defend the last bulwark standing against the might of Persia. Castus knows that the fight ahead will be the fiercest he has ever known, and will very probably be his last.

I hope he continues to bless us with his writing talents in other adventures set amongst the Roman empire.

Castus is a warfighting machine of great efficiency but he is also a deeply decent and honourable man. His credo is quite simple - he is wonderfully loyal (sometimes at first naively so), to his superiors - but it is clear that his primary duty will always be to put his comrades in arms and trusted subordinates first. In countless exploits, we see him pitted against overwhelming odds and winning through from the front, in a way that is entirely believable. This is because Ian Ross understands instinctively what motivates fighting soldiers and makes a disciplined force. His description of close quarter battle and leadership is as good as any to be found. His grasp of minor tactics, the technologies and methods developed by the Roman Empire's armed forces, is both deft and compelling.
Aurelius Castus should rank amongst the foremost heroes of military literature. From humble beginnings as a simple conscript from Rome's Danubian provinces, the story of his rise reveals a remarkable meritocracy that allowed those proven in battle to achieve high rank. He survives on his wits, on a brawny physique and his brand of 'tough love' for the men he serves. Castus is also a hopeless romantic and his amorous entanglements are also well-handled, subtle, poignant and ring true,. This adds a love interest to each book that lends extra warmth and humanity to the epic tale of this believable hero's battle for survival, at ever higher levels of command.
This author and this series surely deserve the highest recommendation. The Castus books ought to become in time as much of a classic as the works of other great military historian-novelists such as Bernard Cornwell, John Masters and CS Forester. Empires wax and wane and technologies evolve, but the Castus books present an unflinching view of reality from great power strategy to how soldiers behave and survive in a close fight. The messages contained are as true today as they were on the battlefields of two millennia ago. Those who simply enjoy a 'thundering good read' should enjoy them every bit as much as the professional military reader or historian.
Along the way I've learned about the Roman Empire and the history of the empire from Constantine and his bring the whole empire u derived his rule to his death.
It's been an amazing series and the final book has so many twists and turns that highlight Ian Ross' skill as a writer.
