We are moving overseas and this was the perfect story to help our daughter understand moving isn't a bad thing.
It's now one of her favourite bedtime stories and she's excited to move.
Beautiful illustrations and story.

Arto has lived his whole life in the snowy, cold North and six years is a long time. When his mom gets a new job and the family prepares to spend a year in the South, Arto is not happy at all. He’s just going to act as if there isn’t any difference. In the new Southern landscape of prickly plants, strange birds, and a big, hot sun, Arto stubbornly dons his winter uniform of boots, mittens, coat, and knit cap day after day. It’s worth the stuffy, sweaty, overheated feeling if he can pretend he’s still in the North.
But when Arto makes a new friend, Ana, he slowly sheds his layers and discovers that it’s not such a bad idea to adapt to your surroundings. When his year in the South is over, Arto understands there is a way to cope with another move while keeping the memory of his Southern adventure alive. A relatable story with a memorable character, Arto’s Big Move uses a gentle touch to convey an important message about adapting to change.

Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Gr 1–3—When Arto's family moves from the cold North to the South for a year, the seven year old is very resistant to the idea. In fact, despite being surrounded by cacti, adobe houses, and sand, he refuses to give up his former garb—wool hat, winter coat, boots, and wooly socks. He spends his days sweating and brooding until a classmate approaches him. Ana's family has moved often, and her knowledge of living in the North connects her to Arto immediately. As the friendship blooms, Arto begins to shed his layers, a great metaphor for opening up to change and new friendship. As the year comes to a close, Arto has mixed feelings about leaving his new home. In the end, he learns that he can take a bit of his Southern life with him. This story will resonate with many children, especially those who have experienced a move. The boldly colored, expressive illustrations adequately reflect the cold Northern climate, with its snow and bulky clothing, and the heat and desert landscape of the South.—Jasmine L. Precopio, Fox Chapel Area School District, Pittsburgh, PA
Review
- A Canadian Children's Book Centre Best Book for Kids and Teens, 2015
"Arnaldo's tale of unwelcome feelings and the importance of friendship is nicely paced and gracefully written, and her expressive, mixed-media paintings neatly evoke Arto's journey. Quietly effective."
Kirkus Reviews
"A great metaphor for opening up to change and new friendship ... This story will resonate with many children, especially those who have experienced a move."
School Library Journal
"The fairly lengthy text gives the serious topic its due, while the pencil, watercolor, acrylic, and graphite illustrations convey the beauty of both North and South locales. The emphasis on Arto's clothing is a wonderfully subtle and clever way of depicting his emotional defenses and, as he loses his layers, how he is coming to adjust."
Booklist
"Bright, cheerful illustrations aptly portray the charms of both northern and southern locations. Facial expressions effectively emphasize Arto's feelings. This would be equally effective in one-on-one or group situations, and could help ease transitions for transient students."

The North is a very cold place to live.
Arto knew that firsthand: He'd lived there his whole life – and seven years was a long time.
To keep warm up North, you have to wear lots and lots of layers. So every morning before leaving the house, Arto pulled on this thick wool socks, stepped into his snug boots, put on his knitted mittens, wrapped himself in his big red coat, and tugged on his favorite hat.

Good premise, but the boy sulks for most of the book which I find to be unhelpful

Arto lives in the north where it gets very cold and he must dress in thick socks, boots, coat, hat and mittens in order to go outside to play. He loves where he lives. But his family is moving to the south for a year for his mother's job. There it is very hot. Arto is not happy. He wants to be back in the north--the place he loves. He goes outside in his coat and hat even in the sun. He is miserable. But one day, a girl named Ana talks to Arto. She tells him how she moved to this new place as well. She give Arto a new hat to wear. Arto finally enjoys this new place, but then it is time to move back home.
The illustrations are very colorful and fun to look at. They give a good sense of both places--hot and cold.
This book did a good job showing how stubborn Arto was about not wanting to move which is a very real emotion in kids. He had every right to feel this way. He never gave up his love for his first home which was okay too. But I did not like how the parents allowed Arto to go out in 100 degree weather dressed in his winter clothes. Nor did I like that he was allowed to sulk for months on end. This was not healthy behavior. And why did it take most of the year for the boy to stop sulking? This seems extreme. If this book review was based merely on the beginning and the end of the book, I would have given it much higher ratings. Advertized for ages 4-7
