"Pure Parnell Hall - wit, intensity, sharp dialog and vivid characters ... maybe his best yet." Lee Child, #1 New York Times bestselling author

A relentless, darkly-funny thriller by Parnell Hall, the New York Times bestselling author of the Puzzle Lady series. Two killers are leaving a trail of mutilated corpses across Manhattan... while hunting a mysterious man with a name so common, they may never run out of victims. They are pursued by a disgraced cop, dying of cancer and desperate for redemption. Caught in the middle, but unaware of it, are a tabloid reporter and the cast of a troubled Broadway play facing a terrifying battle for their lives.

"Chasing Jack is what you'll find if you look up 'Black Humor' in your Funkin' Wagnalls. The wit is savage, the pace relentless. Parnell Hall, always outstanding, has never been better." Lawrence Block

"Parnell Hall has long been one of my favorite crime fiction writers. Chasing Jack is his best yet." Harlan Coben

"Parnell Hall is a pro's pro's pro. No one else creates characters as deftly or puts them in heart-in-your-mouth situations with such economy. Read Chasing Jack once for the joy of it and a second time for a lesson in how thriller writing is done." SJ Rozan

"Parnell Hall, a master of the genre, is on fire in Chasing Jack, a bloody, twisty tale set in the tabloid world of night time Manhattan. Required reading for mystery fans." Reed Farrel Coleman, New York Times bestselling author

Praise for Parnell Hall's books:

“The pleasure is in the wordplay, at which Hall is a master.” The New York Times

“Hall's sly swipes at the movie business enhance this lively tale that keeps readers guessing about the culprit to the end.” Publishers Weekly

“Hall develops his usual complex plot and dialogue-driven narrative, highly recommended to fans of writers like Ed McBain.” Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine

“Hall is a born yarn spinner. Erle Stanley Gardner would be proud. And maybe just a tad envious.” Los Angeles Times

“Will keep fans of light humorous mysteries happily turning the pages.” Kirkus Review

"A fast-moving tale with a light touch. Crime fiction doesn’t get much more entertaining than this.” Booklist

"Hall handles comic dialogue as well as any in crime fiction" Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine

Editorial Reviews

Review

Parnell Hall is the author of several series, including the Steve Winslow legal thrillers, the Puzzle Lady whodunits, and twenty novels featuring inept P.I. Stanley Hastings. *Chasing Jack* is a horse of a different color, an odd cross between police thriller and *A Midsummer Night's Dream*, told with Hall's deadpan wry humor. The two heroes of the story are an NYPD detective named Murphy with bad health, bad habits, and worse luck, and a former New York Times journalist named Jack Jones, now doing celebrity gossip columns for a tabloid. A pair of oddball mob enforcers are targeting victims seemingly at random. While a police task force tries to find connections between the victims, Jack is on assignment following a famous actress who's opening in a play titled *Stand-**Alone Thriller*. For much of the book, the multiple plot lines seem disparate and unconnected, but like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, everything falls into place - Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine "Bitsy hangs around the theater waiting for her mother, Miriam, to be done each day with her Broadway play. Miriam is the understudy to the star of *Stand-Alone Thriller*, Angela Fontaine (she of the cocaine stashed in her lipstick case). A mobster has financed the show, so it had better be a hit, but two goons traveling to New York and methodically killing seemingly unconnected victims have other plans. The cruel duo is pursued by down-on-their-luck sleuths whose alternating views of the chaos create an enjoyable duet: Murphy, the cop on the case, who is emotionally stuck in a missing-child mystery from his distant past, and Jack Jones, a reporter who's covering the play but who can only turn in flattering fluff. Despite Angela's theatrics, Bitsy is the real star here, especially in an extended chase scene toward the end of the book. By then, readers know why the murders happened, but getting there is more the point, with Hall's character development and re-creation of retro backstage antics a draw for theater lovers and readers of the American Mystery Classics series." - Booklist

You want some mystery, crime, theatre, and eccentricity? Who doesn't? Parnell Hall has a lot of arrows in his writing quiver and he uses them all in this delightfully funny mystery. It's not, as I had hoped, a humorous, fictionalized tale about finding Jack Ruby, but it is a great entertainment in a time when we need one!

The story was worth reading. Enjoyed the characters and their interaction with each other. The author have you a good background for each and an opportunity to like or dislike each of them. Enjoyed the story and wanted to continue reading about each character.

Well written, interesting characters, the plot line involving two hit men not credible—more humor less psychopathic killing would have made it better.

As always, Parnell Hall delivers a gem of a story. The characters are artful and eccentric. The plot tugs the reader along and turns opposite to the route the reader was following. And still, everyone arrives at a satisfactory conclusion.

A little slow, over written. Gets good about chapter eighty-nine and then it flies! Enjoyable, good for a rainy day.

Great book. Parnell Hall wrote many intriguing stories. I was saddened to learn he was taken by COVID, this book is his final work.

The characters and plot were witty and smart. I was never quite sure where the story was going but was real satisfied at the end. Great job!

I have read every series that Parnell Hall has written from the Puzzle Lady to Steve Winslow to Stanley Hastings. I never would have believed that there would be a book that has matched and even surprised the stellar characters, plots, settings, etc. of any of the other stories. This book has dine that. Don't be fooled by the simple title. It is quite intricate, compelling, dangerous, suspenseful and exhilarating. I read because I love Parnell Hall's books. If you haven't read anything, please be sure to read this one.
