- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2019I like the Jayne Sinclair stories, which means I've read all but one. That's next. "The Silent Christmas" captures the common soldier's feelings centered on the real events of the World War I Christmas truce at a particular point along the line where enemies became normalized by singing trading food and mementos, and kicking footballs around in pick-up games.
The genealogy factor is an investigation by Jayne Sinclair for a family that was searching for explanations about some artifacts found in an attic box, and they wanted to know more about their grandfather who was only known to them as an old and tired man.
While there aren't many surprises in the story (at least for the reader), the family received a gift of information that was both comforting and bonding to their sense of who they are. Isn't that what Christmas Stories should do?
I appreciate the amount of research M J Lee did for this story as described in the end-matter. Good information that helped the the story to the history behind it.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2022One of the main reasons I enjoyed the book was the fact that it moved along more quickly than previous books in this series. The history in books like this fascinates me. Although the story is fiction, the historical facts are accurate. WWI was such an awful time in history. Thousands upon thousands of soldiers on both sides were killed, many only in their teens.
Genealogy is such an interesting and varied venture. Jayne Sinclair makes each book in this series come alive. When she spoke of enjoying a glass or two of red wine and diving into those delicious chocolates I could almost taste them.
Now I feel that I must try some other books by this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2022This book travels between today and the first world war. A woman who checks and searches the past for relatives agrees to do all this research for a family. At the same time her father is in a coma at the hospital. She takes turns with her fathers new wife. She does well and discovers he was part of the men who had a ceasefire with the Germans for Christmas day.
I totally recommend this book and the timeline is not confusing. Give this book a chance. You will enjoy it.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2019I've been fascinated by the accounts I've read about the Christmas Truce of 1914 for years. World War I was devastating, all wars are, but the Christmas Truce was a remarkable event that started spontaneously by the men on the front lines, the men whose lives were literally on the line.
The Silent Christmas is work of fiction that brings to life the hardships faced by real people who were fighting for their countries. The characters, especially Tom and Harald, are believable and sympathetic, as are the supporting characters. Inspiring book, especially at Christmas time.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2018I remember discussing the Great War with our gardener (who was a young soldier who fought in it). There were times when the hand-to-hand combat became gruesome as the soldiers on both sides had been reduced to taping pieces of hardware together to make into weapons. This is a short book but it paints a scenario of the insanity, absurdity and horror of war: enemies take a break from killing each other to play football and share food/drink/gifts for one day only to resume killing each other as soon as it's over. This was an easy, short read that wove the experiences of one time period with another (a geneaologist's search) years later. It was enlightening at the same time as being entertaining. If you have a few 'me' hours available, I would recommend reading this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2023I loved the blending the story of World War I and the present. Lee creates characters who are so realistic, you feel you are there with them. The war scenes were masterfully written helping us feel what it like to be there. As a genealogist I love the description of Jayne's research techniques. A great read - hard to put down.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2022I've read all of the novels in a row, which maybe part of a mistake, because my memory of each preceding novel is fairly fresh. And that has become a bit problematic for me.
In this story, a father and son come to Jayne after a genealogy talk where they want her to sold a mystery by Christmas for a sick child. The mystery in this case goes back to World War !, and the clues are a bit obscure. As usual, the interweaving of the past and the present research is interesting, and Jayne has a lot going on this time with her step dad and with Christmas right around the corner.
But here's the problem that I'm finding with reading these back to back - In general, I liked this book, though I do think that it could use a good editor to capture mistakes - in this book and the following books, I've found the wrong character named (in this case mixing up David and his son Martin, which really should have been caught in a proof read.) I also find that there are similar character names from one book to the next - are we supposed to believe these are the same people, or just a coincidence? It actually feels like the writer has some set names he works with, but really there is a whole set of names that can be used, and by naming characters by the same names in multiple books, it was frankly distracting.)
I also find that a lot of the male characters in these books come across as petulant little boys. From Jayne's husband Paul to other characters in the books over the series, often people are hiding what they know of the past (and it's usually the male characters) which says something. It's almost become a trope in these books, which is a bit disappointing. Hopefully as this series continues, the writing will move passed these issues which I personally find annoying, and mar the reading experience as a whole.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Touching Christmas Story .
This sensitively written story stands as a tribute to the many soldiers that fought during World War 1 . A wonderful tale of humanity set on Christmas Day in a war torn farmer’s turnip field now a scene of death and war. This book would make the basis of a beautiful special Christmas movie that would help remind everyone of a perfect moment of peace and caring in a world gone mad. Everyone should read this novella Thank you M J Lee.

Loved this story with all the emotions, sadness and warmth of friendship formed amongst the horrors of the great war.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slow, fairly interesting
Kind of slow paced. I almost stopped after chapter 3, then decided to skip ahead, breezed through quickly to the end. Faintly interesting , not gripping, possibly because I had already read about the Christmas truce during WW1.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Christmas Truce
This is another great book in the Jayne Sinclair Genealogical Mystery series. I'd heard about the Christmas Truce and it's been portrayed well in this book. We'd like to think that most of the soldiers on both sides just wanted peace and were fighting for their country to have peace again.
