Have loved this author's thrilling Privateer Tales sci-fi series which lead me to his other works. The Henry Biggston Thriller series is an entirely different genre, a modern day western which showcases Mr. McFarlane's outstanding and versatile storytelling skills. This is the third book in the series and hopefully not the last. The main character is Henry Biggston, known as Biggs, an ex-Army Ranger turned deputy sheriff. With him is his military K-9 companion, Diva. Butte county is a huge western county patrolled by only a sheriff and three deputies. While on an outing with his girlfriend Faith and her daughter, April, Biggs is called on to assist the Forest Service investigate a crime scene in a National Forest. There he finds evidence of a serial killer, and one with expert military and survivalist skills. When the psychotic killer fixates on the ten-year-old April, the hunt becomes personal. Biggs and Diva follow the violent criminal's trail through the vast county, but he always remains one step ahead and keeps circling back to endanger April. Filled with constant action and well drawn characters, this excellent modern day western will appeal to fans of the Walt Longmire and Jack Reacher.

Deputy Henry "Biggs" Biggston is on the hunt for a serial killer. The killer's next victim just happens to be the daughter of Biggs' girlfriend. As Biggs races to prevent the abduction and murder of April he must come to terms with his relationship with Faith, his girlfriend. Biggs is also embroiled in a political brouhaha within the Butte County Sheriff's Office. Biggs is on loan to the state highway patrol and the sheriff is not happy. The sheriff is also running for re-election, so political tension is high. Not to mention one new deputy with an attitude and one other deputy with a big problem. All these story lines are skillfully interwoven and the narrative moves at a fast pace. Although this is the third book in the series, it works well as a stand-alone novel.

This is the third in a new series. Henry Biggston, "Biggs" his preferred moniker, is the modern cowboy. He would tell you though that there were no cows on the ranch where he grew up. If you like action, Biggs brings it. If you like your hero, honorable but flawed like the rest of us, that's Biggs. If you like a worthy sidekick, Diva has it all. She, like Biggs, is a former special Forces veteran, can track the bad guys even better than Biggs, and oh yeah, she's a dog. And if a 90 pound German Shepherd is not sufficient, Biggs has a posse of engaging characters, some of whom arrived on the scene in the first book in the series. The location in a rural sheriff's department in the Midwest is convincingly portrayed. I would recommend you start with Book 1 and enjoy reading book 2 also. I eagerly await the next in this well-written series.

If you’re reading this then odds are that you have already read the earlier books about Biggs and if not that then at least some of Jamie McFarlanes other books (like the Rookie Privateer series).

If not, then believe you me, you’ve been missing out and I highly recommend that you go back to the first book in the Henry Biggston series (When Justice calls) and start from there. It is a ride well worth taking and you will *not* be disappointed! This series contains action, drama and unglamorous look at the criminal underworld and how crimes continues to affect victims for months if not years afterwards.

But it also contains camaraderie, love, hope, more than a little humour and how even though the world may seem bleak, dark and hopeless at times there are still good people out there willing to do the right thing and *that*, more than anything else, is well worth remembering. :)

I thoroughly enjoyed this third Henry Biggston thriller and hope another is in the works. It's a story with well developed, believable characters, woven together skillfully, and culminating in action scenes that keep the reader flipping pages to follow our hero as he does what needs to be done.

The 3rd book in this series finds Biggs on the trail of a psychopath where he has to use all of his skills and resources to prevent more bloodshed. There are some very tense and very sad moments. The ending was a complete surprise which seems to be a trademark of this series. There are so many great characters and it was good to catch up with them all. I really recommend this series. For me it is right up there with Nevada Barr's park ranger books.

A war veteran turned. Cop/deputy he is always trying to do what is right.
The series is very entertaining and I hope there are more books to come.
It is such a pleasure to read a book and not have foul language in order to get a point across. Henry is a really good guy that you would want as a friend...someone to have on your side even with his flaws.

Just completed 3rd book in series, review is for all three.

Wasn't real about first book. Yes I liked it but for some reason it didn't make a big impression. Book two was quite a bit better, Biggs seemed to be growing. By book three Biggs was a solid quiet hero. There was a lot of action with couple of very bad men and Biggs.

Very good stories, great characters and a fine author. A very good series to enjoy.
Thank you Mr McFarlane

Even better than the second book. The tense situations just kept coming. Mr. McFarlane's military and detective knowledge are superb. His plotting and writing styles are even better. Love his proponents. His main characters are kind, honest, endearing, and courageous. Had tears in my eyes near the end. Looking forward to more books in the series.

Even though I haven't written any reviews for the other books in this series, this should suffice for all. The Henry Biggston series is a good read. Not something to be missed and the author has actually pulled off an amazingly good one.

Jamie Mcfarlane is a fantastic author. Downloaded one of his books a few weeks ago, now I've read nearly all of them. Every one fast paced, thrilling, gritty and believable. Hard to put down. I've been losing sleep to finish them. Will be eagerly awaiting his next publication.

I don't usually write reviews but with this book I will make an exception. Great story telling! Characters where well developed, just the right amount of action. Topically relevant to todays world. Highlights the angst between immigrants and law officers and how to get trust back. Exposes the dark and light side of good and bad people.
