A recent murder is ancient history in a breathtaking novel about a sacred lost treasure and poisonous retribution by the Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of At First Light.

What an exotic way to die in Chicago.

When esteemed historian Elizabeth Lawrence is found in her car, killed by a cobra’s bite, only a brilliant professor of semiotics, Dr. Evan Wilding, can see the signs around her strange death. As he helps homicide detective Addie Bisset decipher the scene, the puzzles left behind offer Evan chilling passage into the mind of a killer.

Evan’s investigation merges with that of an Israeli agent, who claims Elizabeth was close to acquiring an invaluable artifact. She was also drawing the attention of unsavory treasure hunters, forgers, and thieves. Was someone desperate to expose the truth of Elizabeth’s astonishing discovery?

The deeper Evan and Addie delve into the case, the darker it gets. A murderer’s archaic crimes are just the beginning. In a race where there can be only one winner, the final victim might be Evan.

Love the characters, interesting story, fascinating facts about the antiquities trade. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

As with her prior Evan Wilding book, At First Light, the author provides lots of interesting facts about the world in which she set the current book. At First Light was set in the little-known world of Viking re-enactors and current-day practitioners of Viking paganism, which made for a very exciting read. Unfortunately, Dark of Night is set in—to this reader anyway—the far less interesting world of the antiquities black market. Perhaps more importantly, none of the secondary characters are interesting or distinctive in any way—they were just seemingly interchangeable names assigned different roles in the plot. One of the most enjoyable characters was Perro, the corgi Evan was “dogsitting” for his post-doc. Perro had a distinct personality and was a pivotal character in several scenes within the book. Despite its flaws, the book was still enjoyable.

Mystery. Intrigue. Murder. Religious artifacts. International criminals. Mix these and other ingredients, combine with interesting characters and strong police procedural aspects, and you have a novel that will prompt ceaseless reading and may cause sleepless nights.

Dr. Evan Wilding returns, once again caught up in a dangerous stream of events. Evan is a professor of semiotics – an expert in ancient signs and symbols – and will need all his knowledge to help his friend Detective Addie Basset decipher the clues and discover answers to the who and why questions that surround this case. A leading historian has been found dead (suicide? murder?), the cause of death tied to aspects of the ancient world. Addie and Evan work to correctly fit all the clues while the mysterious perpetrator(s) seem to be one step ahead, removing potentially valuable evidence before the pair can do anything about it.

If a breathtaking plot isn’t enough for you, the cast of characters will certainly fill in any void. Though blessed with an amazing intellect, Evan is much smaller than most people and this affects his worldview. Author Barbara Nickless allows him to describe the situations and others he comes in contact with, and the potential to be disregarded based on his lack of height is a challenge Evan faces on a regular basis. While Ms. Nickless permits readers to see this aspect of her main character, she also permits his wry humor to inject itself in most situations. This comes into play as all characters are introduced to us through Evan’s eyes, permitting well-rounded and interesting people who contribute their small and sometimes large contributions to the story.

If you are someone who enjoys a good police procedural, you won’t be disappointed. While normal procedures are followed, Ms. Nickless includes much of Evan’s world, and the ancient history of the Middle East comes alive as he and Addie sift through the clues. “Dark of Night” will not disappoint the author’s fans and if you have never read a Barbara Nickless novel, you are in for a treat. Highly recommended. Five stars.

This book is intriguing. In addition to a complicated mystery there are interesting details about archeology and antiquities. The characters are complex and memorable. It’s been quite awhile since I read the first book in the series and I picked up right where it left off. I also grew up in Chicago and spent my younger adult years there, so ther is a bit of nostalgia about the city.

As much as I like Evan Wilding, Addie, and the Mossad agent, I personally wanted more action and less talking. Most of the book was very long conversations with a lot of characters. I appreciated the level of research into historical texts, but got lost in the long list of characters. I did, however, think the dialogue was well written, just too much of it.

Love the recurring characters and relationships! Great story - great read. I hope the author continues this series. Good authors like Barbara Nickless are few and far between; I'm glad I gave the first Dr. Evan Wilding book a chance. I also appreciate that both books were very well edited and were stand-alone stories. Keep the stories coming!

One of the things I know for sure is that Barbara Nickless is a brilliant author and her books are intensely enjoyable. This one was no exception. Having read and enjoyed the first in this series, I knew I would most certainly not regret reading the second one. Now I find myself eagerly awaiting the next one. Dr Evan Wilding is a most fascinating character and I find myself warming more to him all the time. Ms Nickless has the ability to create extremely good characters who capture the imagination and, indeed the hearts of her readers. This particular adventure was full of danger, sorrow and excitement and we were treated to the thoughts of a professional as he tried to solve the mystery before him. The subject was intensely interesting and I really found myself wanting to know more about the subject involved, and trying to work out who the killer was and why they killed. As in all good books, there was also the personal aspect and Evan certainly has his fair share of ups and downs. The addition of a cute Corgi puppy made the book complete for me – another thing that this author realises will grab at the heartstrings of most people, the addition of a dog with a big role to play in the proceedings.

I am really hoping that there may be more Sydney Parnell books to come, but in the meantime I will welcome more from Dr Wilding and his best friend Addie Bisset.
