- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2020There are two reasons I purchased this book and they are very simple: Marni Mann writes amazing stories and Shane East is one of the two very accomplished narrators reading her words. Both of those reasons are enough for me to purchase the book, but to write a review, that’s because I have been moved.
Moving story telling is what Ms. Mann does & is beyond prolific at accomplishing. I always know that when I have her story in my ears, I’m in for a ride of love, lust, passion and twists. “Even If It Hurts” is no different, however the plot is not something I’ve ever experienced before, so I’m glad I took this journey with the narrators.
Ava Erickson portrays Chloe Kennedy using her honey-like tones transform into being a young, naïve girl exploring love for the first time in London. I was step for step with Chloe as she found someone in Oliver that was sweet, kind, and passionate for his Beautiful Girl. All the feelings of first time with someone caring for you as a young woman with respect and love; I just wanted to stay in that bubble forever. But, as we all experience, we have to make choices, with the hardest ones when you let someone go knowing that is what’s best for them. My heart was breaking for Chloe, but Oliver was a knight-in-shining-armor being strong to say goodbye.
Then we stay with Chloe as she moves into part two of the book, letting go of Oliver but not moving on – just working more hours in that spot of early adulthood where you try to grow your career and making ends meet. In walks her Forever Love. Not going to lie – I fell in love with Lance Hamilton from the first page of his appearance. Ms. Mann writes the character all straight women want in their lives – one who wants to be with them from moment one. As Chloe falls for Lance we see her thoughts and his words reflecting the massive amounts of care he has for her. My heart was squeezing when their passion would light the pages on fire – I was bursting with happiness!
Like the book blurb tells us, she sees Oliver again – so many years after he let her go. This is where I get mad at the characters. Honesty, I was angry; ranting to my husband as I listened to Chloe talk about her feelings for both of these men in her life. How dare she do that to Lance! How dare she hide from her best friend! Molly is the epitome of all the best girl friends we have in our lives; willing to hold the mirror up when we desperately need to move on or wake the heck up. I was peeved at Chloe for most of the third act, through to the last page of Chapter 48.
And Shane East walks in at Chapter 49 and takes all that anger, all that resentment, turns it 180 degrees and shatters my heart into pieces. The performance is so perfectly executed that there is nothing to do but let the tears fall like rain. The words in the final chapter in Shane’s voice are going to stick with me for a very, long time.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2023One of my favorite things about Marni Mann as an author is her ability to go there and take us along for the ride. She is not afraid to take us to places that not everyone wants to think about or even that everyone approves of. But that's the beauty of life. The journey and the decisions we make and how that will affect us in the present and future.
I knew going into this story that it was one that wasn't going to be for everyone and that had me excited. Chloe is a young woman that has her eyes set on her future. But while she has been working toward one goal, her romantic life and experience has been lacking. Luckily, she has had a great BFF in Molly that is always there for her, helping her navigate.
We follow Chloe to a study abroad program to England and while there she falls for a man that just may change her life. Oliver is everything she needs for her first experiences. A man that is there and feels lucky that she chose him and wants to show her everything. Their chemistry is electric and Chloe's senses for this man are hitting on all the cylinders. But the more time they spend together, the closer they get. They know their time is limited because Chloe will be returning to the States after the program ends.
And that was only part 1! I loved that this was Chloe's journey, but I so wanted to hear from Oliver and what he was going through and his immediate reactions to Chloe. Did he sense it like her? Was he really all in? I was constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop during their whole time together and that left me a little unsettled. It also made me not as invested in these two since I felt like their relationship was on borrowed time. But Marni Mann still made me feel. That gut punch. That feeling of losing something, but also the giddiness of first love and it being so carnal that you just couldn't get enough.
Then part 2 comes and I just didn't know if Ms Mann could give Chloe what she truly deserved. What I was craving for this sweet woman that still was working for her future, but left a past behind that was not truly behind. But color me surprised when Lance, a successful, wee bit older man that is instantly charmed by this woman upon their first meeting. It was another instant, hitting on all the senses moment for Chloe and she knew that her life was forever changed. Lance was perfection. I didn't think I would love him like I did because I almost thought he would be "too much", but boy did that man change my mind. He too wanted to give Chloe the world. He was all in and knew that she was IT the moment they met and I FELT that too. While Oliver and Chloe felt sweet and puppy love-like, Lance and Chloe felt like the real deal. Like the lifelong love that you do anything for.
"People disappear when there's magic involved. But I'm not going anywhere."
But we don't stop there, we get a part 3 where the past collides with the present and Chloe must make decisions on where she sees her life going. On what truly makes her happy. And her college BFF Molly is still there, being the friend that she needs. No matter what. No judgement. Only love and support. And while readers may not like Chloe and the decisions she made, I felt it. I felt it in the pit of my stomach and didn't always feel great about it, but understood it. Her struggles and conflicted feelings were all laid bare for us to see. It wasn't pretty. But it was HER journey and no one else's.
I was told that this was an emotional book and that I would cry. While I did not cry, I was definitely emotional. And frustrated. And elated. And had a lot of ups and downs. At first I really wanted another point of view. I wanted to hear from Oliver. From Lance. Heck, even Molly. I needed to understand from someone else. But that wasn't the story. This was Chloe's journey and hers alone. It wasn't pretty and it wasn't easy, but it was hers to figure out. Take that for what you will and understand that this won't be for everyone, but it is a story that is told over the years. Because of that, it does read a little too quickly for the relationships in my opinion, but it doesn't take away from the intensity of the situations.
I applaud Ms Mann for giving us the difficult road. For torturing us and giving us a heroine that is no where near perfect and that some will despise. But man, do I still want to hear from the men in this story. And more than the little we eventually get from Oliver. And maybe even a little more of the future. Overall, Even if it Hurts is a book that I would recommend to the right people that don't mind some angst and very questionable decision making.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good beautiful read
As my first book of Marni I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed this book, The love, the story, the characters.
It got me on tears at some parts and at some points were a little predictable, but that doesn't make it less worth the read. Yes at the end, when reading what can be considered as the Epilogue my heartbroke the twice, but that just make me love this book a little more.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Moving Stars
Chloe meets Oliver in London, and their romance is nothing short of being sweet, sexy and adventurous. They get swept away in the romance and Oliver genuinely makes her happy. He makes her smile and see the good in life. Chloe does the same for him. They are attending the same university so their lives are entangled in every single way. Their love for me is fleeting but real. They affect each other in ways I can’t explain but I felt for them when Chloe left to grab onto her dream job.
Lance is someone she meets years after she’s left London, and he chases her. He wants her and doesn’t hide it. He for me is the best choice for her. He never stopped believing in her. He never wanted her to stop chasing her dreams. He just went along for the ride. Chloe leans on him and I love how their relationship goes along with the flow. It makes sense for them to be together and I love them completely. The way Chloe acts in the second half of the book frustrated me so much, but she was stuck between two people, and it’s not an easy choice to make. She does make the choice and I’m sure not everyone will be happy with it.
This book affected me in ways I can’t explain to be honest. I didn’t know what to expect when I started reading this book, I went in blind and I felt that was the best way to do it. There is a lot of intense moments in this book, and I know different readers will have been on different teams. However, I felt like Chloe won and lost so much at the same time in this book. Either way she was always going to lose out because her heart belonged to two different people for a long time. I don’t condone what she did but I don’t hate her for it either, she did what she thought was best for her, and because she couldn’t bear to lose him either. It is a story that evokes a lot of feelings, and for me it is definitely worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written
What a beautiful story, I absolutely loved the magic of it. It really took me into Chloe’s world, her journey with her two loves. I would suggest going into this book blind. I had already known what most of this book was about but I never knew the ending. I’m so glad I was able to enjoy the ride, would’ve enjoyed it even more had I not known the first half.
Honestly, the last chapter really gutted me. The heartache was real. This book is one of those that leave you a bit numb after you finish it and you really need some time to process it before moving on.
[potential spoiler]
Just had to put this out there because it’s still so raw after finishing the book. Oliver should’ve never let her go. He really screwed up. Reading his last chapter, he should’ve just asked her to stay then he would’ve been her future rather than taking it. Sigh. So sad. #teamoliver

3.0 out of 5 stars A quick read
This was just okay. I didn’t really feel the love with Oliver. Their both young and immediately developed an attachment but there wasn’t a whole lot to feel really invested in the story. So much telling and not really showing. We get the basics but not enough for me to actually be invested.
Her husband Lance is an amazing guy and I wanted more moments of their life together. There was a lot of time skips and we’re just told stuff happens. More telling and no showing. It was enough that I ended up caring more about Lance though. Her encounter with Oliver years later didn’t really feel as heartfelt as I though it should have been. It seemed more lust and just passion based.
I wanted more pining and mutual angst. More heartbreaking moments and actual conflict. Chloe had her fun with Oliver and then went home to Lance and never told him! Like wtf?
The last chapter basically wraps everything up and another time skip. This time from Oliver’s pov. It’s a little odd but again we’re told what happened since the last moment they spent together and he never moves on. Dude follows Chloe on social media and saw as she moved on with her hubby.
Lance deserved better. We’re even robbed of a pregnancy and told they have kids and that’s the end.
I don’t hate it but I don’t love it either. This was just a meh read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Your Average Romance
That ending, though. I'm lying in bed with tears streaming down my face. I know Chloe did the right thing, but man that ending was hard to take!
