Cullinan weaves themes of racism and Asian culture, family pressures, and the value of friends, home, and love into a deeply satisfying romance.

― Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

Copper Point Medical: Book One

The brilliant but brooding new doctor encounters Copper Point's sunny nurse-next-door... and nothing can stand in the way of this romance.

Dr. Hong-Wei Wu has come to Copper Point, Wisconsin, after the pressures of a high-powered residency burned him out of his career before he started. Ashamed of letting his family down after all they’ve done for him, he plans to live a quiet life as a simple surgeon in this tiny northern town. His plans, however, don’t include his outgoing, kind, and attractive surgical nurse, Simon Lane.

Simon wasn’t ready for the new surgeon to be a handsome charmer who keeps asking him for help getting settled and who woos him with amazing Taiwanese dishes. There’s no question―Dr. Wu is flirting with him, and Simon is flirting back. The problem is, St. Ann’s has a strict no-dating policy between staff, which means their romance is off the table… unless they bend the rules.

But a romance that keeps them―literally―in the closet can’t lead to happy ever after. Simon doesn’t want to stay a secret, and Hong-Wei doesn’t want to keep himself removed from life, not anymore. To secure their happiness, they’ll have to change the administration’s mind. But what other secrets will they uncover along the way, about Copper Point… and about each other?

Lovely
This lovely romance is as comforting as a bowl of that beef noodle soup Hong-Wei. It's a little insta-love-ish which I wasn't expecting, and a little uneven in places, but that also undersells how the actual relationship between the MC develops. I really liked that one of the MCs is Taiwanese, that important secondary characters were Chinese and that there was this honest blend of cultures. I look forward to book 2 in this series. 3.5/5 stars rounded up to 4

I can honestly say this author is the only one who I have ever come across that can write a romance in such a way that it gets me emotionally invested. I have read several of her books now, and like those, this was well written, emotionally engaging, and very well researched. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed, even if all you are looking for is hot and steamy scenes, which she writes exceptionally well.

This was a well written fun mm romance, with very strong and likable main characters and an interesting work and small town context. I assume it was as accurate as any soap opera in its presentation of the social world of a medical center. Our leading man, Dr. Hong-Wei Wu, is retreating in some disorder and confusion from an extremely prestigious and high pressure training situation to the smallest backwater medical hospital he could find in Copper Point. He has carried out his plan...but we get to experience the remaining tremors as he learns his new reality.
Simon Lane, surgical nurse at Copper Point's St. Anne's Medical Center, was dragooned into the 1.5 hour drive to pick up the new doctor...but no one told him how handsome the new doctor was.
Dialogue is smooth and believable, professionally edited, medical soap opera-esque drama in small teeny tiny medical center and town. Pretty instant attraction between our two guys, and the main drama comes from uncovering Hong-Wei's past and the new medical center policy: no dating other employees.
The books has mild humor, is told from both MCs point of view in third person, and is a straightforward enjoyable mm romance with an enriched context of friends, family, small town, and hospital work life. The characters try to be somewhat intense about their issues, but their obstacles seem relatively unchallenging once they face up to them. Interesting layer of information about Hong-Wei's childhood immigration experience. Gets an extra star from me for the rich context. Although hard decisions are made by the MCs and they feel some heavy pressure and are overworked to near breakdown by the medical center...it's a low angst HEA. There is one detailed intimate mm sex scene between these two loving characters, appropriate to the storylines. Also, a set up clearly for at least two more books with other MCs...I look forward to them!

For those familiar with other Heidi Cullinan works, this book is no kink and no poly.

If you like the sound of The Doctor's Secret, then I can definitely recommend Heidi Cullinan's
Dance With Me (slightly older MCs)
Special Delivery Series (much kink), particularly Double Blind which I rate as one of the best mm stand alones.

Other recommended mm romances:
Dancing Lessons by R. Cooper
How I Met Your Father by L. B. Gregg
Candy Man by Amy Lane

3.5 Stars. I am looking forward to the next book in the series but this one was uneven.

As always Heidi Cullinan has created great characters-Hong-Wei and Simon are well drawn, complex, and lovely to watch fall in love.

However, while Hong-Wei's coming into his role in the hospital is engaging, the drama around keeping their dating on the down low and the hospital policy makes little confused and muddled. It doesn't really ever make sense and a more relationship based plot.

Their connections with others are also strangely put together.

So, I enjoyed these heros but not the plot.

I just want to say, I am not in the medical field at all, so I really liked the book, it had asian pop culture references, so a asian tv drama addict as myself appriciate, as well as some music references. I thought the story was sweet, really interesting about the Taiwanese background, and how it is to grow up in an asian family abroad, asian living family style. There is even about Chinese restaurant history in the US. I found the book entertaining and I also enjoyed the side characters as well as the main ones. Well, these are my thoughts, might be my first or second review, but felt this book needed one..

Lots of Taiwanese food, some bravado, and a bit of being afraid marks the relationship between Surgical Nurse Simon & Dr. Extraordinaire Hong-Wei (Jack). I enjoyed the storytelling, the hospital-centric premise and the interaction between the MCs with the perfect amount of sexiness.
Although, I didn’t quite buy the insta-love portion.
Editing: was good, very few errors
Overall, low angst, sweet romance with a bit of drama for a good read.

So, this is good. The hospital stuff is just detailed enough, for me. It was cool to learn a little about Taiwan culture (a reviewer who is also first gen Taiwanese US citizen was very pleased), And, I really liked Simon's eventual epiphany about his home town. I do know about little towns. :)

It is deliberately this type of hospital doctor/nurse romance and does it well. Simon is intentionally a soft-natured character. Nursing is a tough job, he's got strength. He just doesn't show it the same way Hong-Wei does.

I even liked the epilogue!

This is quite different from the other series I've read by this author, and I think some reviewers weren't expecting it, even though it's right there in the description. Humans. What can you do?

I enjoyed this book immensely. Heidi Cullinan is a wonderful author, and this book was no different than her other books when it comes to the quality of her writing. The characters were well-rounded and interesting, and I enjoyed their interaction and the development of their relationship. The medical aspect of the book was exciting and well done.

Several of my favorite books were penned by this amazing author. Her readers expect nothing but the best because her talent is incredible. The Doctor's Secret does have a slow build in the beginning. It took me several chapters to really get into it, but reading on was well worth it! I adored this story. I'm guessing the reason people are being so hard on this book is because of the slow build up? So often Heidi has you gripped with the first chapter and easing into the story isn't an option. I suggest taking the time to get to know these characters. This story has all the heart and complexity we love in a Heidi Cullinan book.

And, as usual, the "sidekicks" in this story are making me wish the sequels were already released. I'm so glad Copper Point will carry on for another two books.

Some readers familiar with Heidi Cullinan's writing may be disappointed since this book is a lot "cleaner" than some of her other series. I, however, liked it - especially getting to know the different characters. I'm very much looking forward to reading the next book in the series and finding out more about Owen and Andreas and the plot involving Andreas and the board/his dad that both this book and the excerpts I've read on Patreon hinted to.

I'm a long time fan of Heidi Cullinan's work, there's just something about the characters and the stories that gets me - reading a Heidi Cullinan book feels like re-visiting family.

I loved Simon's embarrassment over his Asian drama obsession, Hong-Wei almost effortlessly becoming a big part of the local community after initially thinking he was making a big mistake in moving. I really enjoyed the comments and discussions over success and what each character considers success. Another fun, sweet story with great characters. Can't wait to read the next in the series!

Book and Audio  🎧 narrated by Iggy Tomi
A okay book and a first narration for me for Iggy. A full of feelings "at times" as Hong-wai's secrets start unravelling.  The forbidden feeling vs hospital policies their love would be true or die in the closet.  As I listened to this I found myself skimming with the long bits drawn out storyline. This started out okay and I had a high expectations from the blurb but sadly didn't meet them, I love the author other works but a pass on this hmm. The narrator does an okay job with voices.
Dr Hong-wai was wondering if he'd made the right decision to move to another location. Running from something and maybe family he makes a elderly friend on the plane.
Met at the airport by Simon the hospitals surgeon nurse.  Forbidden relations where not allowed between staff.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 30, 2019
I cannot believe that Heidi Cullinan actually wrote this rubbish after the stunning novels she has written in the past, ie Roosevelt, Nowhere Ranch. This is like a fluff filler piece which she took out and decided to use her reputation to get it published. I was so disappointed with this story. I will not be purchasing the rest in teh series and will really have to study other reviews on newer novels before spending any more of my hard earned money on her.
