Following the success of his 1937 landmark bestseller, Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill wrote Outwitting the Devil, an exposé on the methods the Devil uses to ensnare and control the minds of human beings. Exploring the innermost depths of the psychology of motivation to understand why so many individuals, including himself, cannot find the initiative and courage they need to consistently implement the philosophy of individual achievement, Hill went so far as to interview the Devil himself. The resulting confession from the Devil made this book so controversial as to remain unpublished for over 70 years. Now it is your turn to break the Devil’s code and free yourself from the hidden methods of control that lead to ruin.

In this reproduction of the complete text of Hill’s original manuscript is laid out the exact nature of the power by which the Devil disarms human beings with fear, procrastination, anger, and jealousy so that they do not reach their full potential. This is the same power that paralyzed millions of individuals with fear and despondency during the Great Depression and continues to hold people back from their dreams. Complacency and mediocrity are not the root issue; they are symptoms of deeper ills that we are conditioned by society to accept. But you must open your mind to acquire knowledge and consider facts that might not harmonize with your personal beliefs in order to access a greater truth that will, as Hill said in his original preface, “bring harmony out of chaos in this age of frustration and fear.”

If you have been the victim of lost courage, weakened enthusiasm, and lack of self-discipline—if you are demoralized and plagued by fear, anxiety, overwhelm, or apathy—the seven principles to freedom detailed in this book herald your redemption. You will finally become independent of the causes of failure and misery, break the bonds of destructive habits, and unlock the secret of a natural law as significant as the law of gravity so that you can outwit the devil once and for all.

I had listened to the book on CD because the library couldn’t get the book fast enough for me. I had to rewind because the subject matter is deep thoughts. I had to buy the book so I could read at my speed and flip back and forth. I bought the hardback because I knew I would want to share it and get it back. I am Not a reader and probably bought 3 books in the past 20 years! This book is that thought provoking!

I feel like a lot of the points in the book I already knew and understood but reading the book is so descriptive and in-depth I almost feel as if I am there in Napoleon's mind also masterminding with him. This book is a must-read and must-have on your library shelf!

Hill contradicts himself quite a bit in this book. For example he talks about dreams and how they contain things we think about, he also talks a lot about behaviors and thought patterns that humans preform unconsciously, but he later makes the claim that humans do not have a subconscious mind.

There’s many instances of stuff like this where he acknowledges the existence of a concept when it supports his belief, but in another instance where his beliefs are in conflict with the concept he will dismiss it.

All of this from a man who is writing a book about having the utmost control over one’s own thinking and reasoning capabilities.

That was the only disappointing part of the book for me. Overall it’s pretty interesting and worth reading.

Of all the personal development books I have read over the years, this by far the best.
It shakes some, or a lot, of beliefs we hold and at the same time, gives so much clarity and direction.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Question & Answer book.
Reviewed in Singapore on July 7, 2023
I believe we must first read Think and Grow Rich first before reading this book. Then only it will be a good read as you will better understand the context of what is being written here.

I like Chapter 1 because it brings about most of the 13 principles of Think and Grow Rich via a story telling of Napoleon Hill's personal story.

But as I start to read further, I realise the entire book is a Q & A format. Not what I expect but I reckon there are still good lessons to learn from.

Physically, I wasn't satisfied with the packaging. The edges of the paper cover are folded upwards which I didn't like, as shown on the image.
