Mother West Wind 'why' Stories Paperback – January 1, 2007

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 119 ratings

Grandfather Frog is very old and very wise, and he knows all about the days when the world was young. When he is feeling just right, he dearly loves to tell about those long-ago days. "Chug-a-rum!" said Grandfather Frog. And then he told why Peter Rabbit -- and all rabbits -- cannot bend their wrists. He told a thousand stories, in fact, because that's what Grandfather Frog was meant to do. Stories of Rabbits, Chipmunks, Possums, Foxes -- Grandfather Frog knows the important stuff about everybody who lives around the meadow.

My name is Erin and I am 5 years old. This book tells me where the animals got their names and things.

My son wrote the above review. The series of books written by Thornton W. (Thornton Waldo) Burgess are his favorite books at this time. I purchased a Kindle for him so that he could read when he went to bed. The reason that I choose the Kindle Paperwhite is because it has a light so that he can read at night and it has a touch screen so that it is easy for him to access the dictionary feature. He goes to bed around 8:30 PM and is permitted to read for about 1 hour. He reads about 20,000 words in that time, so he finishes one of these books in about 2 nights. He uses the dictionary - the other morning he explained the meaning of "gullible" for me. I presume that he encountered the word the previous night and utilized the dictionary feature to learn the meaning.

Although I have not read the books myself, based on my son's comments to me about the stories, the series by Thornton Burgess are entertaining and contain good moral lessons for young children.

First read this book as a child over 65 years ago when I read my father's childhood book. Loved it then and love the fact that the kindle version had all the original illustrations which enhance the stories. Perfect book to be read to your young grandchildren!

I loved this book. I had borrowed it from a friend when I was a little girl and it was wonderful to have a chance to share the stories with my children.
However watch which edition you order. Flying Chipmunk Publishing Co. is good but there is a cheep version out there where the print is so small it is impossible to read and they took out the index and the publishing information. It is actually illegal to sell a book that does not have the publisher on the title page Check the publisher before you order.

Need a different method of teaching your children standards of honesty and integrity in all things? Try this series of books. You won't be disappointed. Using the world of nature where children naturally gravitate, these stories teach valuable life lessons without being "preachy".

It may seem that this book is just for children, but it is fun reading for an old guy too. I remember the stories from when I was just a lad.

I loved this book growing up as a second grader back in the day so I wanted to share the same experience with my granddaughter. I was disappointed when it arrived that it did not come with the dust cover as portrayed in the photo.

4.0 out of 5 stars livre pour enfant passionnant mais non illustré
Reviewed in France on December 29, 2012
