The third book in the bestselling British madcap time-travelling series, served with a dash of wit that seems to be everyone’s cup of tea.

Behind the seemingly innocuous facade of St. Mary’s Institute of Historical Research, a different kind of academic work is taking place. Just don’t call it “time travel”—these historians “investigate major historical events in contemporary time.” And they aren’t your harmless eccentrics either; a more accurate description, as they ricochet around history, might be unintentional disaster-magnets.

The Chronicles of St. Mary’s tells the chaotic adventures of Madeleine Maxwell and her compatriots—Director Bairstow, Leon “Chief” Farrell, Mr. Markham, and many more—as they travel through time, saving St. Mary’s (too often by the very seat of their pants) and thwarting time-travelling terrorists, all the while leaving plenty of time for tea.

In
A Second Chance, it seems nothing can go right for Max and her fellow historians. The team confronts a mirror-stealing Isaac Newton and later witnesses how the ancient and bizarre cheese-rolling ceremony in Gloucester can result in CBC: Concussion By Cheese.

Finally, Max makes her long-awaited jump to Bronze Age Troy, only for it to end in personal catastrophe. And just when it seems things couldn’t get any worse, it’s back to the Cretaceous Period to confront an old enemy who has nothing to lose.

Review

Praise for Jodi Taylor and The Chronicles of St. Mary’s Series

“A carnival ride through laughter and tears with a bit of time travel thrown in for spice . . . readers will be impatient for later installments.”
—
Publishers Weekly, starred review

“Taylor does a great job of setting up an appealing cast of characters in this new series opener, most especially the intrepid Max. There is plenty of humor, lots of action, and even a touch of romance.”
—
Library Journal

“Taylor has written a madcap and very funny hodgepodge of a novel whose pacing and humor is reminiscent of a Simon Pegg–Edgar Wright film.”
—
Booklist

“Danger, romance, history, financial and academic politics, hidden agendas, dangerous assignments, characters you care about, and the feeling that more is going on than you're actually reading about. I can hardly wait for book two. Just One Damned Thing After Another is a true page-turner.”
—
SFRevu

“
Just One Damned Thing After Another is a novel that wastes no time getting to the good stuff . . . if character-driven stories are your cup of tea, then you’ll find plenty to like. Max is hilarious, and I love her spirited and crafty nature.”
—
The Bibliosanctum

“What a mess. A
glorious, glorious mess. Let no one ever say that Just One Damned Thing After Another is a book that fails to live up to its title . . . . These books are so perfectly bingeable.”
—
B&N Sci-fi Blog

“Max is a thoroughly hilarious and confident narrator and the sense of real danger, interspersed with copious amounts of tea, pervades the story. This is the kind of book that you walk away from believing in time travel.”
—
Manhattan Book Review

“If you’re a fan of time travel, or if you’re a fan of madcap British comedies, or better yet if you’re a fan of both, then you’ll want to check out
The Chronicles of St. Mary’s.”
—
Adventures Fantastic

“The book can’t be put down, and I loved every minute. Seven books in the series have been published in Great Britain and this first book is now being published in the U.S. I look forward to reading them all.”
—
YA Lit Ramblings

“The writing was witty and fun, and kept making me smile page after page. . . . Max is a brilliant character, the kind of character you root for, faults and all.”
—
All Things Urban Fantasy

“Jodi Taylor doesn’t do things the conventional way.”
—Catherine Scott,
Yorkshire Post

About the Author

Jodi Taylor is, and always has been, a history nut. Her Chronicles of St. Mary’s, a wild mix of history, adventure, comedy, romance, tragedy, and anything else the author could think of, began as a self-published book called Just One Damned Thing After Another. It’s now a bestselling, wildly addictive series.

Jodi Taylor is the author of the bestselling Chronicles of St Mary’s series, the story of a bunch of disaster-prone historians who investigate major historical events in contemporary time. Do NOT call it time travel!

Born in Bristol and educated in Gloucester (facts both cities vigorously deny), she spent many years with her head somewhere else, much to the dismay of family, teachers and employers, before finally deciding to put all that daydreaming to good use and pick up a pen. She still has no idea what she wants to do when she grows up.

You can keep up with all the latest developments at St Mary’s on her Facebook page.

Some of the most satisfying books - stories I have read. Characters live and breathe. Can't say enough about the great storytelling.

This one better than the last...suspenseful, frightening, tragic, funny, moving, puzzling, confusing in spots...much less repetition... Worthy not this author's talents. I am hooked. Highly recommend to those who love history, mystery, romance, unpredictability....

This writer is amazing , I don’t know how she keeps all the details in correct Oder. The books are very exciting, funny and heartbreaking. It made me cry and the emotions were so overwhelming that I contemplated not continuing to read anymore books, I was that upset. I really can’t give too many details without spoilers, but here goes. The Historians plan a jump to Troy, one of Max’s favorite stories. As usual something goes wrong and a very important decision must be made which leads to he part that I got so upset over. As usual the author puts in a cliffhanger that I just have explore, so onto the next book. Ms Taylor is an extraordinary writer

This is book three in the series. I have been reading them one after another because they are so good I can't stop. Wonderful descriptions of historic events and a great story line. A lot of time jumps but you get used to it.

You could read this as another installment of a series that only brings you time travel adventure (and misadventure). And if you read the book that way, or if that was all you were looking for, you'd still be in for a great ride. On the surface, this book doesn't bring anything to the fuller meta plot of rogue time travelers and how the St. Mary's Institute of Historical Research fits into the grand scope of St. Mary's Institutes up and down the time line.

But that is a rather simplified view, when this isn't just an exciting science fiction time travel series, but also a well-rounded saga of a woman's life.

The epic adventure of the history and fall of Troy is well-written and well-researched, and takes up a good chunk of the novel that never seems to drag on. But this ultimately acts as set dressing for the real drama of Max and Leon's relationship.

This is a very difficult review to write without spoiling the entire end of the book. Without giving too much away, it's what comes after Troy that is the book's true story, including the titular reference to Max's "second chance" with Leon. Except even those are not the actual second chance.

This is a very, very good middle book to a series, where everything seems to have evened out but is eventually going to get flipped on it's head once again. Because even the events at the end of the novel aren't the true second chance. It's fascinating that the book is essentially named after the plot of the next novel, which I picked up immediately.

The st Mary’s series is such a fun read. Lots of twists and turns. And it doesn’t take itself so seriously. Just a Great escape

5.0 out of 5 stars More fun St Mary's adventures, and cheese rolling. Fun read.
Reviewed in Canada on October 2, 2020
I'm on a reading binge of Jodi Taylor's St Mary's books, and this is the third in the series. It starts out with the battle of Troy and ends with the battle of Agincourt, along the way taking in a few other adventures including back in the Cretaceous for a hair-raising fight. Along the way Max's on-gain-off-again-on-again love affair with Leon gets mixed up with some cheese rolling and other misadventures. It's a fun read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. And how can anyone not like a book with cheese rolling in it! On to the next volume...I can't wait!

The jumps in Time are still incredibly entertaining and the plot made me emotional. Really enjoyed the twisted ending. Can't wait to read the next one.

Well just finished reading this wonderful book. And all I could say to this ending was f...k. why did she have to stop right there? I`m not telling you what happened at the end, you should just read it yourself.
I hope the 4th book has been written, and is coming out soon.
The story line has`nt changed. This time Max gets to go to Troy . Is there a wooden horse? She gets herself into trouble again. So no change there.
There are some tears that flow and some un-answered questions which have now been cleared up. If you are a St Marys Fan as I clearly am, you will love this 3rd book.
Jodi has made history fun to read yet again.

Hold on tight and enjoy the ride! I think this is my favorite (so far) in the series. Loose ends tied up and new puzzles to get wrapped up in.
The descriptions of events made me feel that I was there with them.
I think anyone who wants a little escape from the everyday and lots of fast passed adventure will enjoy jumping with the St Mary’s teams.
Ready to dive into the next book in the series.
