Charlie West, the main character of the Homelanders series, doesn't fry anyone, but he sure gives them a run for their money. I was moved to tears (I'm emotional, but books rarely make me cry)toward the end of the book when Charlie was going through via a flashback, a sort of private Gesthemane in considering offering himself up as a scapegoat in order to infiltrate the shadowy Homelanders organization which serves as a front for international Islamofascists desiring to bring the US to ruin. That's one of the deeper themes at work here. Another is the process of shaping one's identity as a teen. When one enters teen-hood, as it were, one's identity as a man or woman really takes shape. This is when our worldview is formed, and when we make decisions which affect the following 60-odd years we have left here. For a large portion of the Homelanders, Charlie isn't sure exactly who he is. And wasn't it like that for us when we were in high school? Sure it was.
Klavan dedicates the book to his nephew, Patrick Hudnut, son of his sister in-law, Caitlan Flanagan, who was canned as a contributor to the New Yorker because of her view that mothers, deep inside, are at heart domestics and would really prefer to work at home. This is consistent with Klavan's own politically conservative viewpoint, which he has handled with mixed success in his recent work. As subtle as he can be about the deeper themes in this and other recent novels, he can sometimes be a bit ham-handed in promoting his political views, which, incidentally I am mostly in agreement with. But that's small beer.
The Truth of The Matter is a great read without gore or sex or bad language. Here's hoping Andrew Klavan has a lot more stories like this in his well.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves mystery books! It has a lot of action and secrets that are finally coming out in the third book of the series. Andrew Klavan can definably write magnificent action packed books! I was shocked to learn some of the truths about why the Homelanders are after Charlie West. I can't wait to start reading the final book in the series coming very soon! If you want an immense summer book check out the Homelanders series, you won't regret it!
From book one, chapter one, sentence one, the Homelanders series has never let up on the action. Everything that happens in these books is drained for every possible drop of suspense. But somehow, in the midst of the constant car chases, fist fights and gun fire, you get to know Charlie. And you can't help but root for him as he goes up against impossible odds for what he believes in.
Finally, all the pieces of Charlie's past are beginning to come together for what is sure to be one of the most suspenseful books of all time. My only complaint is that we'll have to wait till August for The Final Hour.
This series is really intended for teenage boys or tomboys (middle school-high school), but as a woman and mother, I found it to be enjoyable light reading. The stories should really be read in order as they build on each other, and I'd also recommend that parents of teenage readers use the Reading Group Guide to discuss the book further with their young adults since the stories provide an easy and excellent opportunity to talk about some very important issues including faith, morality, and patriotism.
