Our fears do make us traitors." -- Macbeth. ACT IV Scene 2.
One night changes everything. It starts with a party and a prank that goes very, very wrong. It ends in a death and a cover-up that begins to unravel everything that Natalie Hargrove has worked so hard to build. It threatens her only dream of becoming royalty, a Princess of the Palmetto Court alongside her boyfriend Mike King.
Natalie, who already reigns over her school, will stop at nothing to achieve her heart's desire. But will her plotting and scheming and secrets and blackmail be enough for her to keep her crown? Or will the ghosts from her past resurface to cause her to come tumbling down?
The Betrayal of Natalie Hargrove is not just another "mean girls" story. What first appears as simply another tale about a bitchy, popular and privileged high school diva, this account is anything but. The plot is intricately interwoven with the subtleties and nuances behind many of characters' actions, but especially those of Natalie, as they get caught up in this tragic tale. And the reader becomes the voyeur as Natalie's conscience becomes corrupted by her acts.
This is really a rather masterful debut story from author Lauren Kate. Upon first read, not all of the complexities may be apparent, but this story is dark and rich with detail that may require a second read to discover.
As the reader delves further into the story, they will learn of the actions that set this chain of events into motion and see that just one moment from our past can mold our future and seal our fate.
The Betrayal of Natalie Hargrove is a "must read" for anyone who is a fan of Lauren Kate or looking to read a story that on its surface is a wicked tale of power and greed, but at its depths is one that speaks of the inevitability of fate and that actions, even the most insignificant, do have consequences.
"Once, you imagined you could be anyone you wanted to be. That you could make the right guy love you and rescue you from your fate. That you could outsmart everyone and leave your past behind for good. How hard you worked for what you wanted. How cruelly fate betrayed you in the end."
Natalie wants what every girl wants at her school. Whats that? To be Palmetto Princess of course! Everyone starts preparing far in advance for this every year. This is what those Southern Belles live for! Natalie knows she can snag her spot, the only problem is, her boyfriend Mike doesn't try like all the other guys. It's just not as important to him. Natalie can't get her spot if Mike doesn't get his! Justin Balmer is currently running neck and neck with Mike and that just don't fly with Natalie.
So there's this huge mega party right?! And guess who gets totally plastered? Ha! Justin! So what would be a better scenario then to let him know who's running the show and pull a naughty little prank on him! So that's just what Natalie and Mike do, only something is about to go wrong. Horribly wrong.

The main character Natalie is the most popular girl in school and has worked hard to gain that status. She is a bitch to everyone and uses people left, right and center. She is driven by becoming her High School's Palmetto Princess and will stop and nothing to gain the title.
I have read reviews that have complained that the main character is unlikable but for me that was what made the book so good. She is completely self centred and self obssessed but I think that makes her a more interesting character when you look at what motivates her. I think her self obssession was seen best through her reaction to the outcome of the prank she had been involved in.
That said as the book progresses you get to see how and why Natalie is like she is. Her mother is like a best friend and no a mother figure at all who has remarried several times meaning a multitude of father figures have come and gone from Natalie's life. Her father, who until recently, has been in jail subjected her and her mother to violence on a day to day occurence.
I found the story and the dynamics of the characters involved fascinating. I loved that this girl had no morales whatsoever and was totally fixated on one very supeficial thing. While taken a little to extremes I think it says a lot about the real price of high school popularity and absurdity of it all. The ending was quite predictable when you think about it but I enjoyed it nethertheless.
