Born on the eve of China’s Cultural Revolution, Ping Fu was separated from her family at the age of eight. She grew up fighting hunger and humiliation and shielding her younger sister from the teenagers in Mao’s Red Guard. At twenty-five, she found her way to the United States; her only resources were $80 and a few phrases of English.

Yet Ping persevered, and the hard-won lessons of her childhood guided her to success in her new homeland. Aided by her well-honed survival instincts, a few good friends, and the kindness of strangers, she grew into someone she never thought she’d be—a strong, independent, entrepreneurial leader.

“She tells her story with intelligence, verve and a candor that is often heart-rending.”
The Wall Street Journal

“This well-written tale of courage, compassion, and undaunted curiosity reveals the life of a genuine hero.”
Booklist (starred review)

“Her success at the American Dream is a real triumph.”

Why All These Outrage?
1 Star
Why All These Outrage?
Western readers might wonder why so many Chinese feel so strongly about this memoir being fake. Afterall, there have been plenty of fake memoirs in the English world, and none raised so many eyebrows. Here is one analogy that might help you to understand: What if someone labeled himself as a Holocaust survivor, wrote a memoir to iterate his sufferings, but turned out to be a Nazi instead? Can you image the outrage then? The Culture Revolution is China's Holocaust. And this book (by labeling itself as non-fiction) is a betrayal to all the true survivors.I was wondering why Ping Fu, being a successful business person, would bother to make up her history and write a book about it. Usually the true suffering was bad enough (e.g. see A Single Tear by Ningkun Wu). There is really no need to lie. Almost every decent Chinese family has a heart wrenching story to tell(i've heard plenty from my parents and grandparents). What if she didn't suffer? what if she benefited as a red guard by prosecuting others, instead? would she feel ashamed of her true history and must make up a lie to confirm with her public persona? If my speculation has gone too far, then Ms. Fu please come out and tell the truth, because everything in this book is anything but.-----To view an objective reporting on this controversy, look for The Guardian report published on Feb. 13, 2013 "Ping Fu's childhood tales of China's cultural revolution spark controversy"To view a new review (Amazon deleted the original which had accumulated 1400+ helpful votes and 70+ pages of comments, citing "visual distractiveness") by lin.http://amazon.com/review/R3RWO4HE5R2NG4/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#R3RWO4HE5R2NG4

Top reviews from the United States

I heard Ms Fu's interview on NPR, then went to Amazon. I always check out reviews first, and was shocked to see the essentially bimodal one versus five star review statistics. Unprecedented.

This happened the same week that American media was ablaze with documentation from Mandiant that removed any doubt, once and for all, that there is in play aggressive and inappropriate behavior in cyber space by elements in China. To any thinking person, it is obvious that the hundreds of "one-star" reviewers are disingenuous and phonies, people working together on a common smear agenda. Does any thinking person truly believe that these "one-star reviewers" actually shelled out the money to buy this book? My review says "Amazon Verified Purchase". None of theirs do. Think about it.

So I bought the book and read it cover to cover. Please do the same. It is destined to become an American classic. It is a heart wrenching story of a complex journey, well written, brutally honest, and profound in its message. It is a story of courage and hope, but especially to me (a non-Asian) it is a joyous confirmation that people like Ping Fu are pure Americans, more patriotic and loyal to this country than many multi-generational Americans. She shows why we Americans (and Canadians) should embrace our special immigrants, as the fellow countrymen that they are. They remind us of what a great country we have, and why.

And for all you Angry Chinese that will read this and add your robot- like criticisms, hear me loud and clear. Ping Fu loves her China homeland too. That comes out clearly in her book. And because of this, you are right to fear her. Because through her writings, she is showing that enlightened Chinese, Chinese Americans, Chinese Canadians and others are united by their hatred of the repressive forces that you are showing here on Amazon, naked for the world to see. And we are listening to those Chinese. And we welcome them as our brothers and sisters.

So please buy this book. Read it. You'll be glad you did. If you are anything like me, you will identify with it. Then read the vicious smears here at Amazon, and you will realize that this is a living book, where the forces of evil are not defeated in chapter seven or twenty, but have followed you to your home computer, spewing out their venom.

My prediction: years from now, this entire "Amazon" experience will be pointed to as a shared experience that helped a sleepy world to fully understand the true nature of the repressive forces alive and well in parts of modern China. I hope that some bright author picks up on this idea and runs with it.

PS: Within 90 minutes of posting this, I received eight rather energetic, similar and very negative comments from non-native English speakers. I checked all of their profiles, and they are obviously fake - no one ever bought this book or anything else - because where they live Amazon doesn't deliver. All were written between 1:30am and 3:00 am China time, which tells me that they are salaried night employees taking orders from a civilian or military supervisor. They're as funny as they are annoying. The best comment of all was from the fellow that claims he borrowed his book from the university library a while ago, but can quote any page from the book to prove that he really read it (Huh? You hated the borrowed book, but still have it?).

Ping Fu has lived - is living! - an amazing life. I count at least five distinct trials she has endured and surpassed, any one of which would make, on its own, for a gripping and inspiring narrative of how best to "bend, not break" in the storms of life:

1. Being ripped from the arms of her loving family at age 8 and forced to live with her 4-year old sister in a single dorm room for ten years of China's cultural revolution, during which she suffered hideous abuse at the hands of the Red Guard and her dorm mates

2. Being officially termed a "nonperson" for her college thesis on sex-selective abortion and female infanticide in China's countryside, which drew early international attention to this crisis, and resulted in her deportation to the US with no money, no connections, and no English proficiency

3. Finding her way - as a 22-year old, on her own - in the United States, from ESL student and waitress, to undergraduate and computer programmer, to computer science graduate student, to successful researcher at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications

4. Leaving the ivory tower to start (with her husband) the GeoMagic business creating, marketing, and selling 3D imaging and modeling software, managing its growth through the dot-com boom and bust and the growth of her own family

5. Returning to the CEO role of her company when it was on the brink of bankruptcy, and managing it through its own liquidity crisis and the ensuing financial crisis of 2008 to new heights of success, ultimately bringing her to the attention of the international press, and a position on President Obama's entrepreneurship council

Whew! More than a week after I finished reading the book, recounting this barest-possible outline of Ping's life story still takes my breath away. I cannot recommend this memoir strongly enough as an inspiring story of overcoming childhood trauma, embracing a new identity in a foreign land, and grappling simultaneously with extraordinary adversity and the everyday challenges of business, life, love, and family.

As Ping says, even when we feel we have been broken we have the power to put ourselves back together. When we do, we find that we are no longer the same - we have cracks and scars, and are maybe a bit rough around the edges. However, the magic of this process is that the imperfections in our new selves are not our weakness - they are our strength.

-Derek

As a side note - There has been a coordinated campaign to give this book 1-star reviews by people who think Ping's story reflects poorly on China. Personally, I think Ping's story presents a very positive, albeit unromanticized, view of that country (as well as the United States!) - with heroes outnumbering villains, and individuals often responding valiantly in the face of very adverse conditions. In any case, most of these reviews are by people who have not read the book, and have zero evidence for their assertions that Ping's story of her own life departs in any significant way from the truth.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspirational tale and unusual approach to leadership
Reviewed in Germany on January 3, 2016
Ping Fu tells a fantastic story. It had a profound effect on me. I did not care about the historical or political dimension of the backdrop. What inspired me most is her attitude in personal and business affairs.

This book has given me more confidence in my own attitude and leadership style. I embrace and admit to weakness rather than hiding it. I take a pragmatic approach to everything. And I always look for cooperation.

Some quotes from the book and comments:

1. People succeed through "a combination of effort, intelligence and luck".

2. She quoted Viktor Frankl's 'Main in search of meaning': "Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom." I cherish Frankl. He has survived a german concentration camp, losing his wife there. His biography and outlook on life closely resemble that of Ping Fu.

3. "Later in life, I realized that many students learn the theory behind engineering and mathematical principles without ever applying their education through hands-on experience."

4. The book is Ping Fu's story, told by Ping Fu, as she remembers it. The book is not, nor does it aspire to be, a factual retelling of the events of the time. She writes "the first step in luring anyone into your worldview was creating an engaging narrative".

5. She incorporates emotion and feelings into her leadership style. That is an attitude that fits my personality well.

6. "Think about moving forward to make personal or social progress, rather than moving higher to gain a superior position".

7. A major theme in her life seems to be change. She has often had to deal with tremendous change, either by moving or switching jobs on purpose, or caused by an outside force. I think her ability to manage change, to cope with it, to accept it, to not fear it, plays a role in her success.

8. Nobody does it alone! And nothing gets handed to you! Both are true in her case.

Everyone should write a memoir. Everyone should tell his or her story, even if it is only for a few people.

I saw the author interviewed on BBC News, which is what made me want to read her full story. She has experienced very tough periods in her life and although had little early education has driven herself to be very successful in the USA, when it could have been so different. I learned a lot - I knew little of Maoist China before reading this. It certainly held my attention, made me count my blessings and look to strive to do more in my own life. There are better written books, but many are not true stories, this one is a very personal story made more so in the way she tells it and also by what she omits.

A very inspiring and captivating story. Insight into China's Cultural Revolution and the strength of Ms. Fu to overcome many obstacles, to see challenges as opportunities, to take nothing for granted, to never give up...so that she was able to make her personal and professional life a success in America.
