Besides writing science fiction like The War of the Worlds and The Invisible Man, Wells was deeply interested in history and current events. This book was written during World War II, after he had resigned as Minister of Allied Propaganda. While in this position he became privy to information that shocked him concerning the Roman Catholic Church. Much of what he found is in this book. After it was released a loud protest came from the Roman Catholic press accusing Wells, a respected writer, of spreading half-truths, innuendoes, and logical fallacies. He responded by saying that the church routinely engages in a complex, modern boycott of liberal thought that requires us to fight this intolerance with our own intolerance of the Roman Catholic system. For the most part, this book has been swept under the rug of history because Wells offers credibility to an opposing view.

The son of a professional cricketer and a lady's maid, H. G. Wells (1866-1946) served apprenticeships as a draper and a chemist's assistant before winning a scholarship to the prestigious Normal School of Science in London. While he is best remembered for his groundbreaking science fiction novels, including The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, and The Island of Doctor Moreau, Wells also wrote extensively on politics and social matters and was one of the foremost public intellectuals of his day.

This is one of the few books that tell us the truth about the important roll that the Catholic church played on keeping people in ignorance and poverty during medieval times. H. G. Wells description of that reality is historically accurate. I think that books like this help us to understand that behind the scenario of current events are hidden powers that try to manipulate and exert power on people in order to keep mankind in ignorance and servitude. Three thumbs for H. G. Wells!
