When darkness falls… Only true love can save them…Beiste MacDougall has only just found himself as laird of his clan after a brutal attack from Vikings leaves his father slain. On the night of his sire’s death, a beautiful woman comes to his castle begging for help, calling upon a vow their clans had made years before. Though he’d rather wallow in his pain, Beiste is tempted by the lass, the secrets she holds, and the chance at retribution she brings.Lady Elle Cam’béal is desperate to save her brother and her clan from the vile clutches of her Viking enemies. But there is only one man who can help her, a handsome, provocative laird with a beastly temper. When he locks her in a chamber, she is visited by an apparition, and left with a secret that changes her destiny. Elle must figure out a way to accept her fate, but also forge a future of her own choosing. As battles and treachery rain down upon them, Beiste and Elle find unlikely allies in each other, and a few stolen moments of passion that bring light from the shadows…A much smaller, novella-length version of this story appeared originally in the Once Upon a Haunted Castle anthology. This extended version is twice the original size!

Eliza Knight is an award winning, USA Today and international bestselling author. Her love of history began as a young girl when she traipsed the halls of Versailles and ran through the fields in Southern France. She can still remember standing before the great golden palace, and imagining what life must have been like. Growing up in the Washington, D.C. area, her weekends were filled with visits to museums, and historical reenactments. Escape into history for courageous heroines, irresistible heroes and daring escapades. Join Eliza (sometimes as E.) on riveting historical journeys that cross landscapes around the world. She is a member of the Historical Novel Society and Novelists, Inc., the creator of the popular historical blog, History Undressed, a co-host on the History, Books and Wine podcast and a co-host for the true crime podcast, Crime Feast.

While not reading, writing or researching for her latest book, she tries to keep up with her three not-so-little children. In her spare time (if there is such a thing…) she likes daydreaming, wine-tasting, traveling, hiking, staring at the stars, watching movies, shopping and visiting with family and friends. She lives atop a small mountain with her own knight in shining armor, three princesses, two very naughty Newfies, and a turtle named Fish.

Look for STARRING ADELE ASTAIRE a story full of glitz and glam, delving into the life of Adele Astaire, a spirited and talented woman who served up smiles and love both on and off the stage—with and without her also famous brother Fred Astaire— along with a determined young dancer with rags-to-riches dreams. Coming in June 2024, THE QUEEN'S FAITHFUL COMPANION.

This newest Eliza Knight book has a little bit for everyone. A dashing hero of course, a strong heroin obviously, battle, intrigue, honor, fielty, oaths....Oh and did I mention paranormal. A little paranormal, but it incredibly adds to the story. If you have ever had the feeling someone was giving you a sign from beyond, or guiding you on a course from beyond, you will absolutely love this story. The torment in this story is real, and most people can relate to losing loved ones, feeling like lifes events are somehow your fault, or feeling like you are not worthy of happiness.
This story is a quick read and I actually read it in a day. The story is not so quick that you feel rushed or that things are missing. Its the type of story that grips you and reads so smoothly that you keep going as if binge watching your favorite tv series, you just have to know what happens next.
I am a hopeless romantic and am a true sucker for a historical romance. One of the reasons I recommend this book is because I think there is something in this story for everyone. Its not overly sappy, not overly gory or gruff. Its got just that sprinkle of everything to make it a fantastic story. We could all use a little of Elle Cam'beal's strength and a bit of the Beiste MacDougall charm.
A must read for all Eliza Knights fans!!

Elle and her brother Erik are forced to escape their home and flee for safety when the Vikings attack and kill their parents. Elle hides her 10 year old brother so she can get to Laird MacDougall for help, not knowing he has passed away. Bieste MacDougall is the new laird of his clan after the death of his father this day. When Elle shows up at his door pleading for help he cannot refuse her. Their story is action packed and has secrets, a ghost, mystery, surprises, and love that can’t be denied.

What a spectacular read! LAIRD OF SHADOWS is a beautiful and captivating story. I say beautiful, because our Hero, Beiste MacDougall, and our Heroine, Lady Elle are such wonderful people, each in their own way. Tragic circumstances bring them together, and each is drawn
to the other....the skill with which Eliza Knight paints the characters, and their growing affection for each other, is simply amazing.

I admired Elle for her courage and fierce protectiveness of her loved ones. When Elle first meets Beiste, he is mourning the loss of his father, who had been murdered. Grief and anguish rendered him gruff and cold. Needless to say, it was a rocky beginning, but eventually, the tide turns, and they begin to see each other in a positive light. We see that Beiste is deeply loyal to family, honorable, and increasingly drawn to our lovely and sweet heroine!

A beautifully crafted plot, a tender and captivating love story, a struggle for victory over vicious enemies...Eliza Knight has delighted and amazed me with LAIRD OF SHADOWS! You simply must read it for yourself to experience the beauty of this book!

Here’s a note to myself, folks. I finally got around to reading this book nearly three years after it was released. If I’m not mistaken, the original version was a much shorter novella published with some other similar reads, and this version has been stretched to a whopping 244 pages. Yeah, still not overly lengthy, IMHO.

As much as I’m a huge fan of this author, it pains me to have to admit there were some things that kept this book from really wowing me over, which is a shame since I liked how sweet, caring, and repentant the hero became after their rough start the first night they met. The hero hits himself over the head for how rude he was to her. He verra quickly found his manners, folks. Unfortunately, I just didn’t find the whole thing overly original like I’m used to from this writer.

Here’s some examples: “Beiste” as this huge, hunk of mountain of muscle hero’s name just seemed rather kiddish and foolish. The twist at the end regarding someone’s parents was blurted out like it was meant to explain everything here and the rushed “all’s well that now ends well” now ending felt thrown in to quickly wrap this up.

The hero himself I mentally pictured as The Witcher type character. Because, hey, that works for me and any excuse there, am I right? Yeah, I see you nodding your head, too. Maybe it was because I saw a picture of him today geared up like a warrior in that upcoming new season. My, oh, my! Mmm...Mmm...Mmmh...Lol So I let myself some loose reign here and pictured the heroine being the sweet, soft spot for that battered and bruised warrior weary soul to rest and move on to a HEA. T

Btw, the job she was told the Fae had picked her for, if she so chose to accept that mission, was an “OK, if you say so..I guess” kind of thing. It felt random and rather nonsensical to include.

Avid romance safe fans may note the same contradiction I sensed regarding his deceased wife. A couple of times it is referenced he deeply loved her and misses her, can’t even move on, yet I distinctly remember at one point he thought of that former wife in a negative light because she was cold towards him. That was a misstep in consistency. Since I prefer he love this heroine more, it was like a lifeline I choose to grab and save myself from thinking this lass would ever play second fiddle to someone else. That's just how I roll, folks.

So overall, it was just okay...with some good points, too. I’m glad I can notch my historical romance belt one more notch and take this book off my to read list. No doubt I’ll be back for more though from this author and series. She is one of my top ten Scottish romance authors, after all.

Scotland has a history filled with many myths, legends, tales of mysterious magical happenings, beliefs in the old gods as well as the new, and a touch of mischief thrown in by the Fae, is the perfect place to find an exciting, unexpected romance between the brooding, hunky, Warrior and a feisty, stubborn lass. Laird of Shadows is Book 1 of the MacDougal Legacy, a new series written by Eliza Knight. Her characters are always well developed, interesting and authentic and the plot holds your interest. If you enjoy Scottish romances with a touch of mystery and magic, you should enjoy reading this book. It is easy to recommend this book because you won’t want to put down.

I thought I was going to get through this whole book without any crude sexual content; but though it wasn't as bad as some of your books you still didn't close the bedroom door.

I absolutely love Eliza’s work and enjoyed the way she wove this story around a Scottish legend. Elle is an extremely strong woman who overcomes family tragedy, and Beiste is a charming laird, haunted by his past. They come together under dire circumstances and must battle not only the Vikings, but also their own feelings. I would recommend this book to all lovers of Highland Romance. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
