The voice in her head says he’s guilty. She knows he’s innocent.
Devon Burges is in the throes of a high-risk birth when she learns of her dear friend’s murder. The police quickly name another friend as the chief suspect, but Devon doesn’t buy it―and despite her difficult recovery, she decides to investigate.
Haunted by postpartum problems that manifest as a cruel voice in her head, Devon is barely getting by. Yet her instincts are still sharp, and she’s bent on proving her friend’s innocence.
But as Devon digs into the evidence, the voice in her head grows more insistent, the danger more intense. Each layer is darker, more disturbing, and she’s not sure she―or her baby―can survive what lies at the truth.

“Nothing not to love about this awesome, intriguing, exceptionally well-crafted, politico-financial murder thriller, that is not only a page-turner, but a model of how a woman can go through physical and mental wood-chippers, time and time again, and still be the strongest person in the room. A clever and addictive read from a bright new talent.” —Kimberly Belle, bestselling author of The Marriage Lie and Dear Wife

Praise for For the Best
“Vanessa Lillie’s For the Best is an unrelentingly sharp thriller that kept me guessing almost as quickly as I turned pages. Lillie has done something truly incredible in For the Best: as much a twisty who- and why-dunnit, the novel is also a pointed meditation on the power of restorative justice, privilege, and second chances. I couldn’t put the book down, but the questions it raises will stay with me for a long, long time. Lillie’s twisty, tense sophomore novel will keep you guessing until the very end.” —Halley Sutton, author of The Lady Upstairs
“Propulsive and crisp writing, I couldn’t put it down!” —Kaira Rouda, international and USA Today bestselling author of Best Day Ever and The Favorite Daughter
“A fascinating look at the power of restorative justice, For the Best is Vanessa Lillie at her finest. With damaged characters and a dark undercurrent, the plot unravels a myriad of devastating secrets in the wake of an alcohol-soaked night that left a man dead and a woman accused of his murder. Mesmerizing and thought-provoking, For the Best smolders with a brooding, slow-burn tension you simply won’t want to miss.” —Christina McDonald, USA Today bestselling author of The Night Olivia Fell and Behind Every Lie

I was drawn in from the moment I read the first the chapter. Devony Burges, who goes by devon, is 28 weeks and 1 day pregnant. Shes being rushed to the hospital, as she has started having contractions and bleeding. You can feel the terror and the emotions as the story is told. You can also gather that she is an organized perfectionists who has a thing for charts and lists. The chapter ends with Devony being put under anesthesia. As shes being put under, she hears on the radio that her friend has been found dead.
As the story continues, Devon is struggling as a new mother. Her baby is crying all the time and she has a voice in her head that is negative and demeaning. She allures to the fact that she went through a trauma as a child and this voice a nagging bully who seems determined to remind her of her past and what a horrible mother she thinks she is.
Devon then remembers that she has her murdered friend, Belinas, day planner. Devon is determined to get back to some sort of normal, to save her sanity and her marriage. She is determined to prove that the man accused is not the real killer, and to finding the person truly responsible. She goes into things with a biased, as the man accused is her longtime college friend who she cares deeply about. He also is the murdered women’s employer and possible lover.
Devon has a law degree and history working in DC investigating fraud cases. She is very analytical and organized. She is also known to get information by bending the rules, breaking the law, and obsessing over her cases. She makes some questionable moves in order to gain information. Her husband becomes increasingly worried about her health and safety as she digs deeper into the case and the dangerous people involved. He is wary about her getting to involved in the case and with his Uncle, who seems to be at the center of all she does.
She has a lot of anxiety in the beginning about her child, as any mother who almost lost their child would. She doesn’t let anyone hold, or even see, her child and keeps her in a wrap on her body at all times when shes out and about. As the plot thickens and becomes more intesnse, she seems to distance herself more and more. The voice continues to berate and belittle her and towards the end, she starts letting the voice get to her more and more.
I wont get into the ending to much, because WOW what a twist! I do not want to give anything away. I will say that I couldn’t put it down and I was completely shocked, which is a great feat, as that rarely happens for me. I give this book 5 stars for sure!
Thank you to NetGalley, the author Vanessa Lillie, the publisher Thomas & Mercer for providing me with an advanced reader copy of this title in exchange for an honest review.

Devon’s efforts are complicated by new mother issues, like too little sleep and needing to schedule breaks to pump breast milk, as well as serious postpartum problems that include a cruel voice in her head.
Little Voices is fascinating, unnerving, devastatingly sad, and hopeful. I love that Devon has a brilliant mind and adores research. Devon’s a complex character with a lot of layers that the author exposes slowly throughout the book. There is a major reveal near the end which will shock some and not surprise others – I wasn’t surprised but that in no way altered my enjoyment of the book. The mystery was well-plotted and fast moving.
I recommend Little Voices to anyone who enjoys character-driven mysteries, suspense, or psychological thrillers. I’m looking forward to the author’s next book.

I did thoroughly enjoy this book! The characters aren't super great and I didn't fall in love with any of them. But It was really interesting to follow along with our main character and feel what it's like for her dealing with postpartum. That was probably my favorite part and the part I found most interesting.
The plot was good. Not overly exciting but it was intriguing and managed to keep me reading without boring me. And even though the ending didn't impact me like I wanted it to, it still was good and I'm happy with it. I didn't see that outcome or predict it beforehand which is nice.
Something that is a little annoying would be how many times it talks about breast milk pumping. Sheesh. It's happening all the time in this book so be prepared for that.
This book wasn't my favorite but it was still pretty good. And as I said before, it's a great debut! I'll for sure have to be looking out for if this author writes more things.

Devon is a terrific investigator and I liked her, though she was a bit bonkers at times ! I did get a bit cheesed off at how many times she was either pumping breast milk or crying !! That got a bit repetitive and made me roll my eyes when I happened upon another instance of either occurrence.
She did spell tic wrong twice as tick, market-ready needed a hyphen to make sense. At one point she wrote Phillip twice in a sentence and one time it needed to be replaced by him to read better. She dropped a comma here in a sentence where it did make a real difference. "My heels echo against the stairs as I descend a woman reborn." I looked up water tables on Google but it didn't help me so I'm none the wiser there and the same with bobble. Back luck was written one time and I think bad luck was actually meant there and boney should be bony. I HATE American English used like it is here, "I don't got much time".......it just makes me wince.
However, I did like the explanation of Saudade. My experience with this word is as a song-title by Chris Rea that he wrote in memory of the terrific Ayrton Senna, and it always makes me a bit sniffy. I've never seen it used in another context so that made a nice change.
Looking forward to her next offering.
