When Gabriel Wolfe, a government assassin afflicted by PTSD, travels to Africa to recover the body of a former SAS comrade, he has the backing of the British prime minister. But every favour comes at a price.
And now Gabriel has to complete another hit before he can continue his search for salvation.
What he discovers next shakes his faith in everything he trusts. He has marched headlong into the heart of a corrupt web of land deals, blood diamonds and the global arms trade. At the centre of the web sits someone Gabriel can hardly believe is guilty. Someone he’ll need every ounce of his skills and resolve to defeat.
Standing between him and the truth are tooled-up mercenaries, a local warlord and his machete-wielding ‘Rock and Roll Boys’ and a mysterious assassin who anticipates his every move.
“A Cross Between Bond and Reacher”
This complex and breathtaking action thriller is the fourth novel in Andy Maslen’s Gabriel Wolfe series. First Casualty begins in the middle of a firefight in Africa, where Gabriel and his partner, Britta Falskog, are facing a crew of bloodthirsty militia fighters commanded by the terrifying Mama Chissano.
The action moves between London, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Hong Kong and never lets up. As he begins to uncover the truth, Gabriel sees that his adversaries have spun a web of betrayal that stretches right back to his last, fateful mission in the SAS.
Fans of Andy McNab, Chris Ryan, Lee Child and Daniel Silva are saluting Maslen as an author to watch.
If you like your heroes flawed as well as resourceful, you’ll love Gabriel Wolfe. He’s been called “deadlier than Bond”, and “more human than Reacher”.

To begin with, I'm a fan of John Sandford, Vince Flynn, Lee Child and others. I've read everything the above authors wrote; usually in order published. There are no better storytellers than Sandford and Flynn. I buy the new Sandford novels as soon as they come out (Golden Prey is scheduled for 4/25/17). That said, Lee Child's first Reacher novel, "The Killing Floor" was so mediocre I wasn't sure I wanted to buy his second novel, but I'm glad I did. Apparently there's a learning curve here.

So it is with Andy Maslen. "Trigger Point" (the first Gabriel Wolfe novel) was a good read, but not great. I gave it four stars. "First Casualty" is a result of continued improvement over the course of four books. I wish I could give it 4.8 stars, because Sandford is the top of the heap to me and he gets five stars. The plot has some twists and turns, and the characters and the plot development are first-rate. It's a good read. I've read the first four Gabriel Wolfe novels and am about to buy the fifth.

I wasn't sure how this story would play out when I read the plot summary but any doubts of mine were blown away. What a great book and this series is increasing the momentum. The stories are better and the characters are better. Maslen has a fast flow to his writing style. The parts in Africa were exhilirating. Britta, Fang, etc are intriguing side characters that hopefully have an increased presence. Sasha Beck and the other villains were exciting to read about. I really liked Condor a lot but I think this book topped it. This series continues to impress and I look forward to reading the rest of Wolfe's adventures.

For years, Gabriel Wolfe has been haunted by the ghost of a fallen soldier he was forced to leave behind on his last mission with the SAS. Michael "Smudge" Smith's death and abandonment was the cause of Gabriel leaving the military and one of the roots of his PTSD. And now, he finally has a chance to close the psychic wound and begin healing.

He had promised himself that one day he would return to Mozambique, recover Smudge's remains and bring them home to his family. But political unrest and others factors have kept him from fulfilling his promise. Now, finally, his chance has arrived, but it comes at a price. Barbara Sutherland, Britain's Prime Minister, will clear the diplomatic red tape and provide logistics for Gabriel to search for his fallen friend, but first he must assassinate the Finance Minister of Zimbabwe, Philip Agambe. She explains that Agambe is corrupt and funneling funds to terrorist groups, so even though assassinating government officials defies international protocols, an exception should be made because of his terrorist ties. Gabriel reluctantly accepts the assignment, but is very uneasy about it.

With his friend, MI5 agent Brittany Falskog joining him, Gabriel flies to Africa, where things go off the rails very quickly. A stunning revelation by Agambe followed by attempts to kill him and Britta force Gabriel to draw back, reassess the entire mission and sort truth from lies. His search for the truth leads him to Hong Kong where he revisits his past, then on to the US and finally back to the U.K. and Africa.

In each book in the series, Andy Maslen takes the reader into Gabriel's past to deepen our emotional connection to the character. Without deviating from the plot or slowing the action down, Maslen makes this psychological investment a vital part of the story that only enhances the reading experience. I only wish I could give it more stars!

An action packed thriller with an excellent storyline that was well written and researched. The characters were well developed and Gabriel Wolfe continues to be an excellent main character. Plenty of action and hard to put down. A highly recommended book that leaves the reader wanting more adventures with Gabriel Wolfe.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review, but also purchased a copy for my collection.

Love following his adventures. Although at times it's like the movie s The land of the never empty magazine. And at times you can see how its going to go. But as entertainment it's exciting, fast paced good character development and I totally recommend the series.

I've become a great fan of the writings of Andy Maslen, and the Gabriel Wolfe novels in particular, and this is the best one yet, a definite 5 Stars. Gabriel Wolfe is a former SAS Captain, now working occasionally as a special operator for his former CO in a top secret Department of the British Government. This novel seems more of an extended story, with more twists than the previous novels, and deepens and realigns his relationships with many continuing characters such as Britta Falskog, Don Webster, Barbara Sutherland, and good ol' Smudge Smith. Gabriel's PTSD treatment is further explored with Dr Fariyah Crace, and we finally meet Master Xi Zhao, who was so influential on Gabriel's early life. Great book, with a lot of loose ends for the character tied up, and more background laid and expanded for future storylines.

Gabriel finally found his lost teammate and brought him home to his wife and daughter. He also tied up some very loose ends.

A real thriller from start to finish. Technically accurate with the exception of a few errors. Glocks have no manually operated safety and cordite has not been used as an ammunition propellant for decades.

Gabriel Wolfe has demons, both real and imagined.
The web of intrigue surrounding past missions, involving high ranking politicians, manipulative international agencies has Gabriel returning to his formative years to try and unravel his mind, to stop the torturous guilty thoughts and find closure. All the while being hunted not knowing who to trust, will he survive completely intact?
Totally immersive read, Andy Maslen's attention to detail is utterly superb, crafting a visually spectacular action packed story.
Thoroughly recommended

As with previous 3 books a good easy read to pass lazy afternoons.
I imagine rest of series of books will follow the same vein but that won't stop me finding what's next mission for Gabriel Wolfe.
Only 4 stars this time as ending petered out and would have liked to see a bit more payback for injustices done.
