- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2017Martial Lawless (Calm Act series) by Ginger Booth
These were great books to read. I really enjoyed them. Quite intelligent and interesting premise. The writing was really excellent.
The premise is that climate change and weather has become so extreme that people are fleeing into 'arks'- secure bunkers for the wealthy and powerful, away from the masses of people and climate violence. Everyone is hoping for a spot in a corporate ark. These books are the story of tech whisperer Dee Baker and her friends.
I've always loved Robinson Crusoe kinds of stories. People deprived of the conveniences of modern life who have to survive. One of the things I appreciated about these books was the lack of ultra-right-wing, batshit crazy, hoary old men with their arsenal of automatic weapons who can't wait to mow the world down and instill their religious beliefs by force on the world. And reduce women, once more, to chattel slavery.
I almost gave up on the books because I get very grumpy when people try to force religion on me. I don't want to read about it. Book 3 in the series got unpleasantly religious. But I persevered. I'm sure the U.S. would be quivering with religious estasy in this scenario, but I still don't want it invading my living room.
Mostly, the science was fairly good. The notion that the ocean might evaporate was absurd. When dinosaurs ran around on earth, CO2 was over 3000ppm. and the oceans didn't evaporate. And before that, the entire atmosphere was composed of CO2! That's right, CO2 was a million ppm. And the oceans didn't evaporate. This didn't happen in the books, but it was mentioned as a possibility. But mostly the science was believable.
The real attraction for these books was that they were intelligently written. There was a love interest, but it wasn't the focus of the book. The books were about how people pulled through a series of ongoing disasters by cooperating with each other. What a breath of fresh air! Highly recommended books for people with a brain and imagination.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2018A frightening well written story series. I work for the NPS and reading the hard science climate change studies carried out by the bureau that is trying to preserve shrinking glaciers and other natural resources in National Parks matches the future this author is projecting. Aside from its scary future the story is entertaining and engaging. I would recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2016I find the whole scenario behind the Calm Act series fascinating so, even though I wasn't inspired by the cover, I was keen to dig into Martial Lawless. The cover makes sense now and my keenness was well rewarded.
What I like about the series is that it explores a breakdown of government and society but not in the usual 'total meltdown' fashion. In the post Calm Act world, some bits are working and some aren't, and there is still a form of government in place working to maintain order and help societies rebuild.
Martial Lawless takes us through another stage of that journey. The heroine in the series, Dee Baker and her super important man friend Emmett head off to Pittsburgh unexpectedly to weed out some bad behavior. As usual, logistics play a big role in their challenges and Booth does a great job of setting up scenarios that one could well imagine, but wouldn't have thought of (in fact if there ever is a semi-post-apocalyptic world I think I'll make a beeline for Booth as her lateral thinking would prove valuable for survival and comfort). Their relationship has its twists and turns but for me that's less interesting than the bigger picture story.
If you haven't read the first two books in the series (or the prequel) I encourage you to do so before reading this one. It will make a lot more sense and you'll understand the characters much more easily if you do. And it will leave you, as I am, waiting for more in the series, which I hope Booth will continue.
You can get End Game, the first in the series here - End Game (Calm Act Book 1)
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2018Continuing to read this series because it is good enough to keep reading! Other than repetitive phrases, it is an interesting look at a dystopic future that could really happen. Sometimes, there are "leaps of faith" as to what happened but the event usually gets explained by actions and dialogue. The main character, Dee, is a "back to nature" kind of gal who is in love with another major character, Emmet, who is a by the rules kind of guy and keeps many secrets. They are an interesting mix of character and actions. This series is well worth reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars And you thought it couldn't get worse
If you have not read End Game, you need to before reading this book, else
nothing will make sense. Okay, so, you have read End Game, maybe
Project Reunion and this is the next in the series. Project Reunion was a
happy happy joy joy story. Martial Lawless definitely is not! The story
starts with Emmett and Dee travelling to investigate the murder of another
Resco. When they get to Pittsburgh, they find the town is split into a
myriad of minor religious cults, all with their own private army and all in a
shooting war with each other and everyone else. The first half of the story
focuses a lot on the impact of the Calm Act and climate change etc on
religion, and also on the different beliefs between Emmett and Dee. There
is a lot of conflict between them both, and Emmett has two loyalties, his
lover and his employer. (Throughout the book I can't work out why Dee
sticks with Emmett, they are SO different). Then about half-way through
the book, some soldier asks Dee an innocent question, "So where are the
xyz group appearing?" and that's when it gets very bad. I don't want to give
away any spoilers, but from now on, a bunch of religious nutters with guns
is just a walk in the park compared with 'xyz'. Whereas Reunion left me
happy that there was still good in the world, Lawless left me angry about
how evil mankind can be. I guess that was sort of the point:) (btw, there is
nothing wrong with an 'angry' book, I remember reading 'Carrie' by Stephen
King as a teenager and being furious and so wanting to help Susan help
Carrie. It was still a great book, as is this one). Like all of the rest of the
series, this is so totally believable, except for one thing towards the end,
that I could not see people really doing or accepting. But everything else,
not only believable, a lot of it has actually happened. Buy it, read it. Try not
to get TOO angry, and remember, more is promised in the New Year.
Thank you Ginger Booth for great reading entertainment and for creating
this 'Calm' world)

Love this series, especially during a pandemic!

4.0 out of 5 stars A very different look at America in climate change - and a love story!
A facinating and very different look at life in a world gone to pot from climate change and the politics employed to ensure 'something' can be salvaged from the ensuing mess. Also a study of human frailty and how quickly society takes a big step backwards into a more feudal way of life. And in the midst of it all, the Internet survives!
