About the author
Jess Michaels is a USA Today Bestselling Author who likes geeky stuff like Star Wars, playing video games, Bob’s Burgers and collecting POPs! She also drinks a LOT of Diet Coke. Probably an unhealthy amount, but it’s her only vice. She will eat (almost) anything coconut, truly anything cheesy and nothing spicy (yes, she is a walking stereotype when it comes to that). She likes cats, her dog Elton and people who care about the welfare of their fellow humans.
Although she started out traditionally published by Avon/HarperCollins, Pocket, Hachette and Samhain Publishing, in 2015 she went fully indie and has never looked back! She is lucky enough to be married to her favorite person in the world and live tucked between the ocean and the mountains in Oregon.
When she’s not watching Our Flag Means Death or trying out all the new flavors of Greek yogurt, she writes historical romances with amazing heroes and sassy heroines who do anything but wait to get what they want.

When I was a teenager, a boy made a comment about my chin. Said I had a witches' chin.. Now I didn't like this boy, we weren't friends, even more importantly he wasn't important to me..He made a random comment that honestly, affected me for the rest of my life. To this day, I pose in pictures with my held slightly tilted down, to hide my chin.. it's not that big.. LOL.. My point? A single random comment can change your entire life.. My story is simple, to the point and while it changed the way I posed for pictures it didn't change my life.
Jess Michaels on the other hand.. tells a story in Deceived how one rudely spoke phrase did ruin a girls self image and did in a way ruin her life. Deceived is the second book in her Wicked Woodley Series, a spin of from her Notorious Flynns, and it tells a popular boy falls for wallflower story. Fun, sweet and has a way of seriously making you cheer, not for the popular boy but for the wallflower!!
Josie Westfall was never a secure girl but when a nasty comment made by her best friend's brother went viral (or the 1800's version of it) Josie lost it. Literally her self esteem, her place in society, her friends, etc.. It's been years and she's remained alone and out of society but a friend's wedding brings her back. And right in the path of Evan Woodley, the boy who made the comment. The boy she secretly had a crush on at that moment AND the one person she blames for ruining her life. Time is supposed to heal all wounds so why doesn't it heal girlish crushes??
Evan Woodley is a society darling. He's dashing, he's charming, he's every girl's dream. What he isn't is interested. He is still reeling from his sister Clare's disappearance and really doesn't want a relationship, especially with Clare's best friend, a friend by the way that Clare is still in contact with.. hmmmm. When he meets up with Josie at the wedding he does the one thing he has been trying to do for years, apologize. And that one moment changes everything.
This wasn't a perfect book but in many ways it was realistic.. As I pointed out at the beginning a stray comment can change your life, especially when done during those awful teenage years. And of course there are mean girls everywhere, we have all met them. Who doesn't wish their girlhood crush would notice them? And family bonds vs best friend bonds? Yeah we all have those as well. So Ms. Michaels really dashed this book with some serious reality..
The fantasy? Well that's all in the romance.
And family ties vs best friends? That has nothing on family ties vs falling in love. A relationship that was almost destroyed because of family pressure. There were moments where I wanted to smack some of the characters, plenty of them.
We still don't know what's going on with Clare and believe me I have many many questions.. Personally, I think Clare is in it up to her oh so aristocratic neck.. just sayin'.
Check out the book, the series, it's wonderful

FINAL DECISION: At times heartbreaking, DECEIVED is the story of a Wallflower who ultimately prevails in getting the man she always wanted. Although the hero is a true jerk at times, he grovels enough in the end to gain my forgiveness.
THE STORY: Josie Westfall had a crush on Lord Even Hartwell as children. He thoughtlessly destroyed her in dismissing her and giving her a nickname which haunted her in society. Sixteen years later, Evan and Josie are thrown together again at his sister's wedding. Encouraged by his brother, Evan tries to find out what Josie knows about the location of his sister who has been missing. Even as he tries to get information from Josie, Evan begins to realize how badly he has hurt the sweet Josie and is surprised by the attraction between them. Torn between his duty to his family and his attraction to Josie, Evan worries who will he have to betray.
OPINION: I'd like to start by saying that I think that Evan is jerk for most of this book. He's not a hero that I adore. From the beginning, Josie is too good for him. His repeated and thoughtless action in hurting Josie might be understandable, but they are not easily forgiven. What I did like in this book is that ultimately Evan really does have to grovel to get back into Josie's good graces. The redemption of the hero is is a jerk depends so much upon the quality of the grovel and Michaels has done a good job of making Evan pay for his thoughtless treatment of Josie. I really liked the character of Josie who is stronger than she believes she is. Although at first she doesn't believe herself worthy of Evan, she eventually realizes that she deserves to be treated with respect and dignity and that might make her too good for Evan. I am a fan of the Woodley family and am happy to see them again and I am looking forward to the next two books in the series.
WORTH MENTIONING: The outlines of the next romance for the Woodleys is beginning to be made clear in this book.
CONNECTED BOOKS: DECEIVED is the second book in the Wicked Woodleys series. It can be read as a standalone although I recommend reading the other books in the series because there is an ongoing story involving the Woodley sister that has an important part in the story in this book.
STAR RATING: I give this book 4.25 stars.
