About the author
Jess Michaels is a USA Today Bestselling Author who likes geeky stuff like Star Wars, playing video games, Bob’s Burgers and collecting POPs! She also drinks a LOT of Diet Coke. Probably an unhealthy amount, but it’s her only vice. She will eat (almost) anything coconut, truly anything cheesy and nothing spicy (yes, she is a walking stereotype when it comes to that). She likes cats, her dog Elton and people who care about the welfare of their fellow humans.
Although she started out traditionally published by Avon/HarperCollins, Pocket, Hachette and Samhain Publishing, in 2015 she went fully indie and has never looked back! She is lucky enough to be married to her favorite person in the world and live tucked between the ocean and the mountains in Oregon.
When she’s not watching Our Flag Means Death or trying out all the new flavors of Greek yogurt, she writes historical romances with amazing heroes and sassy heroines who do anything but wait to get what they want.

The heroine, Annabelle Flynn, is the sister of two brothers who are notorious rakes. Therefore she tries to become a respectable lady, especially as one brother has become a Duke. She is trying to take advantage of having a Duke for a brother and hopes it will help make an advantageous marriage. However, in steps her other brother who she thinks is fast becoming even worst by frequently visiting a gambling hell. So, what Annabelle, who is trying to only engage in ladylike behavior do, she simply follows her brother to the gaming hell and tries to interfere with his becoming even more notorious.
So on one hand she is struggling to engage in only ladylike behavior and on the other she is fast becoming notorious herself by trying to save her brother.
The gaming hell, Donville Masquerade, is owned and run by a very sexy self-made intriguing Marcus Rivers. Marcus finds his business disrupted by this independent lady. Sparks fly and the two quickly become entangled. Passion and attraction rages between these two characters as they make an agreement that will allow Annabelle to remain chaste for her marriage but also explore her own sexuality. She finds herself falling for Marcus but at the same time tells herself he is from a totally different world and she wants to go in a different direction. But she finds out just how difficult that is going to be and that opposites attract is more than a myth.
This book captures from the first and holds the reader’s attention throughout until the very end. I can’t wait for the third installment of the series, which will be Crispin, the brother involved with frequenting the gaming hell’s story. I highly recommend this author to anyone who wants to read a steamy hot and sexy romance. Jess Michaels is always a winner on my list.
I did wonder a bit about Annabelle’s plan to watch out for her brother; what did she really expect to do to help him but it was a good way to get the characters together. This also made me excited to read Crispin’s story and find out what mystery (most likely a woman) has him destroying himself.
Like other reviewers have mentioned given the setting of the novel, a sex and gambling club, there are some hot scenes.
One thing that did bother me while reading was some of the lack of proof reading. Sorry, I’m not a grammar expert by any means but there were obvious flaws lines like “sliding me beneath me”. I don’t if it’s a proof reading problem or when it was made digital but did make me stop and take me out of the story at points.
THE STORY: Annabelle Flynn wants respectability and intends to use her brother's new dukedom and her dowry to find a titled husband. The Flynn family reputation has felt like a burden to Annabelle. The Flynns biggest problem right now is their brother Crispin who is drinking, gambling and fighting too much. Annabelle's quest to save her brother leads her to the sex and gambling club of Marcus Rivers. Marcus has wanted Annabelle for years and when she arrives at his club, he can tell that she is interested in what she sees there. The two end up agreeing to explore Annabelle's sexuality and yet leave her a virgin for marriage. Things become complicated, however, because Annabelle realizes that the title men she thinks she wants pale in comparison with Marcus.
OPINION: I really liked the character of Marcus in this book. He is a self-made man who runs a naughty club and yet isn't really a dark character. He is actually very sweet. He has wanted Annabelle for a long time but believes that he is not good enough for her. When the two enter their bargain, Marcus knows that it can only be temporary.
Annabelle is a strong woman with deep desires who has made the mistake of thinking that respectability is all she needs in life -- not love and not desire. She takes control of her sexuality. I was especially interested in the fact that she refuses to adhere to stereotypical roles for women all her life. She is educated and when she finds Marcus who appreciates her knowledge, she is seduced by his acceptance of her.
Unsurprisingly because this book takes place in a sex club, there are some pretty hot sex scenes. The emphasis, however, remains on the relationship between Marcus and Annabelle. I think my favorite part of the book is when they are discussing the accounting books of the club. That is where the sexiest part of their relationship is born because they both desperately yearn for someone to accept them.
My only complaint is that I felt that Annabelle too quickly jumped into a sexual relationship with Marcus. The transition felt a little jarring which diminished my overall enjoyment of the book a little.
Readers also get a glimpse of Crispin Flynn's problems in preparation for his book which will be the third book of the series.
WORTH MENTIONING: Fans of THE OTHER DUKE will be happy to see Rafe and Serafina enjoying their happy ending.
FINAL DECISION: I liked the characters in this book and I am especially partial to good guy scoundrels. The book is hot. My only complaint is that the relationship between Annabelle and Marcus too quickly becomes sexual and I felt that it was jarring.
CONNECTED BOOKS: THE SCOUNDREL'S LOVER is the second book in The Notorious Flynns series. This book can be read as a standalone although the couple from the first book makes an appearance here.
STAR RATING: I give this book 4.25 stars.
NOTE: I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley in order to provide an honest review of the book. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions expressed are my own.

So with this second book after less than a year of Rafe in his role as the duke, his sister suddenly wanted to live a respectable life and find a titled husband amongst the ton...I thought this was silly. The hero/heroine's characters never did develop fully, there were no leading up interplay, didn't feel their attraction etc. Oh sure, the hero wanted her from the first but she came across as selfish and shallow.
Add into the mix, the troubles of the other sibling, Crispin. To make long story short, the heroine decides she can watch/protect him from this "club". How this was supposed to come to past, it was never revealed in the book. Instead, the heroine has these dark desires (she was horny - excuse my language) and decides she was going to use Marcus (the hero) to satisfy her desires without taking her innocence (eye roll) because she wanted to be a virgin with her husband/respect her vows etc.
So this story became really ludicrous at this point. H/h engaged in all sorts of sexual games (including anal sex - yuck!!) all to preserve her innocence. So much for being respectable! In keeping with the era this book was written in, respectable young ladies did not engage in these activities so at this point, I was angry reading this tripe and more angry at myself because I paid money for this nonsense.
I hate reading books that leave me with a bad taste (and this one certainly did that). I pre-ordered Crispin's story and I am hoping it's better than this nonsense. The only reason I gave it 1 star is the hero's character was well written and the appearance of Rafe/Sera (from first book)...at least we got to see a little of their happily ever after.
