The kicker with this book is that the narrative journey of Brayden and Lily’s love story gracefully moves between the present and bittersweet memories from their childhood. I truly felt like I was sitting down with two good friends who were sharing a scrapbook with me of their young love shenanigans, giving me the dirty deets about their adventure and how they get past the issues of their relationship. I think that was the most heart wrenching part, knowing how they ended up and needing to find out why. The details of their story were revealed ever so carefully that it kept you reeling until you are given the answers to what had happened. And let me tell you, it was surprising, heartbreaking and beautiful all at the same time.
Brayden and Lily felt so real to me. I could connect easily with both of them and I really loved how their relationship developed realistically. Katie Ashley successfully developed their characters so finely with great precision, and I just fell completely in love with them. I don’t want to give too much up about how their relationship progresses but based on the previous books, most people are aware that this two are perfectly made for each other. The romantic element in this book felt so natural and I loved every part of it.
What I also loved about this book is you get a background of how everyone else were before they even became famous. You get the douchebag Jake Slater, the character that you just wanted to slap silly. You have AJ Resendiz, your ever perfect Latino lover and Rhys McGowan who has always been so humble and sweet. The characters’ personalities were so perfectly melded together with the plot that I just kept thinking of how perfect of a book this was. Brayden and Lily are definitely the shining stars but what I loved about their relationship is that its not always rainbows and butterflies. They have acknowledged that life isn’t always perfect and that their way towards marriage hasn’t been always smooth and easy, but both of them are convinced that they can make it work with compromise and recognition of their challenges…they were so real and were perfect in their own ways.
For the most part I can honestly say this book was flawless for me, but I must confess, there were a few parts in the present I wish could be longer. Some parts in the past were a little slow for me but it definitely balanced out the story well.
Melody of the Heart is the perfect combination of unforgettable characters, a carefully crafted and revealed plot with a layer of surprises and undeniably beautiful prose that you find yourself savoring with each page. Seriously, this book charmed the socks off of me! It wasn’t overwrought in emotion or drama nor was it the type of book that was trying too hard to be something profound. But it is a book that felt real, broke my heart a little and later on redeemed because of their love for each other. A lasting love they chose to keep, fought and worked hard for.
Congratulations Katie. What a way to end this series! Thank you for giving us all these wonderful characters. It breaks my heart to see them go but their unique and lovely stories will stay in my heart forever.
So if you want a book that will sweep you off your feet, a story that will show you what great, eternal and unconditional love is all about, then go ahead and pick this one up. It will not disappoint!
Brayden was the one that was a mystery to me. He totally melted my heart in the other books. He was so kind, and fatherly to the girls. I really was surprised to see his story come out. I really could have smacked him for what he did, but I forgave him just as Lily did.
I am so overcome with emotions right now. Reading this book was like reliving the end of the show Friends for me. I've read all their stories, fell deeply in love with the men and respected the ladies in these books. Katie Ashley did a superb job in ending a series. Taking us back in time to the beginning and giving us the details of the relationship that we all hope to have. A love that conquers all. That is why I loved this book so much. It shows us the strength of her characters and that with love, preservation and determination, you really can have it all.
My favorite line from the book was spoken by Brayden: "But you gave me the melody I never knew I had." He took my hand in his and brought it to his chest. "The melody straight from my heart." And this ladies is where my crying turned into a full on ugly cry that would make grown men run and hide.
Thank You, Katie Ashley for the entire Runaway Train series, and for telling such a beautiful love story. Bravo!
I have to admit when this series first started I was feeling sorry for Brayden and the idea that we’d never get to see him get his HEA in the same way we were all going to get a chance to see his bandmates. But having read his story, I think the way this was done perfectly showcased his importance in these stories. He was the solid for all these friends, the proof that they could take the leap and find a piece of happy for themselves. It was the gift that Lily and Brayden gave to each one of them, a gift they were able to share with someone else.
As much as this was their story, it was also the story of Runaway Train. Each of the band members as they joined, became famous and dealt with the fame that they discovered. I loved seeing that AJ was simply just AJ. His character whether it was early days in the band or years later, falling in love – he was the same guy. Jake had his moments, mostly that had you wanting to throttle him, but it was just another piece of his puzzle – showing how hard he fell for Abby when came into his life. And Rhys. I think he just became my favorite of all the guys in this story. His character was quite vulnerable as he initially joins up with Runaway Train and that vulnerability was something that we saw only a glimmer of during his story.
But back to these two. The format of the story was simple. A question was asked and we faded into the past as these two walked us through their first meeting, first time and all the places they stopped along the way. The split that they encountered was far more emotional than I expected it to be. Ms. Ashley did a fantastic job in not only conveying those emotions but creating the buildup so that when everything collapsed, you felt it deep in your bones. That moment in the story was heartbreaking and just showed how far they had come to be the happy family they were today.
I have thoroughly enjoyed every single book in this series and can’t wait to see what comes with the spin off series for the members of Jacobs Ladder.

Lily and Braydon are interviewed for a piece in Rolling Stone Magazine, looking back at how they met as high school students and the journey their love took over the years. The ups and downs of their relationship and those of the band.
I was prepared to love the book and I wasn't disappointed. I wasn't prepared for how emotional I found parts of the story, it even made me cry at points! I finished the book and just sat there for a minute smiling away to myself - I blinking well love all of the characters in this series. Another brilliant book to add to the re read pile.
Lily has the most beautiful personality and for her to love Brayden after all he did, made me love her more. As for Brayden, be prepared to want to throw your Kindle and smack him!
Do yourself a favour and buy this book. I'm so sad to see the end of the series but Katie definately left the best to last. Though I love all the boys and their families stories this one really stood out.
Will defiantly be reading the series if the two brothers of Abbey and many more books from this fanatic author. Defiantly recommend this series of books.
