It's Fourth of July in Salem, Massachusetts, and B&B owner Charlene Morris is about to witness the shot heard 'round the town when a stunt goes wrong during a film production in the fourth Salem B&B Mystery from cozy writing team Traci Wilton.

Madison Boswell, a beauty recently transplanted from Boston, is starring in the Independence Day play in this New England town full of colonial history--and, of course, witchcraft. Madison may not be a Wiccan, but she does seem to have certain hypnotic powers. And she's left some angry people in her wake, from a fellow actress beaten out for a role to a jealous betrayed wife. Now, as Charlene films the performance for her housemate, Jack--a handsome ghost who shares the Victorian bed-and-breakfast with her and her Persian cat--the drama queen takes a deadly bullet from what was supposed to be a prop gun.

With a long list of suspects and lots of backstage whispers, it looks like the investigation by Charlene and Detective Sam Holden could set off some fireworks...

Entitled actress with hypnotic eyes

Entitled actress with hypnotic eyes
She is a B&B host with the most and techno savvy ghost. This was my first Salem B&B Mystery but it will not be my last, it was easy to keep p with the characters thanks to the sprinkling of backstory. I will be going back and reading the series starter so I can see how Charlene met Jack and solved his mysterious death. I really enjoyed how the story included a smidge of stereotypical Salem i.e. wiccan/witch aspect through Charlene's friend, Kass. Ah but Kass is not the sorceress of which we speak, no that would be the victim, that would be Madison Boswell, who was not well liked by many but definitely captivated by others. With this group of thespians there is as much drama as there are suspects. Charlene does a great job of helping Detective Sam Holden, who seems to appreciate the help she gives by passing on the info that she and Jack are able to gather from internet searches and asking questions. The story starts out with a historical play and ends with a Shakespeare classic and in between Charlene manages to take care of the B&B, provide wonderful happy hour snacks such as the warm chicken dip and white sangria. A good deal of red herrings can be found in this red, white, and blue Independence Day cozy mystery.

Not an amazing work of fiction but definitely an entertaining and easy read. That's what I was looking for when I found this series in my local book store.

I’ve read three of the books in this series & they never disappoint. The stories move along with no fillers. Charlene having moved away from Chicago after losing her husband in accident purchased a bed & breakfast at a good price. Upon moving in realized it’s because the B&B is haunted. Now that Charlene has become close to the resident ghost Jack, she is happy that she is moving past her grief. Charlene has helped to solve previous murders which makes Sam the detective constantly mad for putting herself in harms way. Sometimes Charlene doesn’t have to try, it just happens. In this case she takes some of her guests to a play about Salem when one of the actresses is murdered. Charlene having recorded it for her ghost Jack begins searching for clues to find the guilty person. Charlene always a good conversationalist learns clues about potential suspects. This story as with others in the series has me thinking I know who is the guilty party. Although I am usually correct the person is involved, so far I have not been correct guessing the murderer. You can’t go wrong with these books & recommend them to anyone who enjoys murder mysteries without much violence.

Have I ever told you how much I love this series? No? Well, let me tell you. The Salem B & B Mystery series is by far my favorite cozy series. This book, the 4th in the series is, at the moment, my favorite. Though there’s always the possibility it will be pushed aside for the next book. LOL. Each book is better than the last and the characters grow with each new story.

In Mrs. Morris and the Sorceress, we find Charlene caught in the middle of a mystery. This time, we have actors and actresses, ghosts and sorceresses. There are jilted lovers and lovers to be. Old friends and new friends. Not to mention Jack, our friendly neighborhood ghost and Silva, the cat and Sam, our sexy detective.

When the local acting troupe puts on a special one time performance, everyone is there to see it. But when someone is shot, the question is, was it an accident or was it a role to die for? Charlene manages to find herself in a few tight corners. Will she solve the mystery? You’ll have to read it to see!

I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book.

Something has been nagging at me about this series, but I couldn't put my finger on just what. Charlene has never had a good reason for investigating the murder. I read a LOT of cozy mysteries, and these just don't quite measure up. Also her 'relationship' with Jack is so cringey it's embarrassing. (Plus there are some continuity errors there.)

In this book, the ending feels very forced. The murderer somehow planned the whole thing by means that anyone ever associated even slightly with the theater won't believe.

I hope that the next book has Charlene in therapy for her weird codependent relationship with a ghost, Jack moves on into the light, and Sam finds someone more worthy of his attention.

I have read 4 of the author's books and I'm finding each to be better than the previous. She's building on her characters and starting to use "Jack" more in the stories. I hope the ghost character grows more. I enjoy her twists in the story and this book did have a surprise. I generally guess who the bad guy will be, but this time I was off. Fun read.

Charlene and several of her guest witness the murder of an actress during the performance of a play in Salem. Naturally Charlene feels duty bound to solve the crime. Interesting mystery with many suspects. There is a lot of Salem history and more interaction with Charlene and her new friends. Except for the murders, her life in Salem has been rewarding.

Great series. Ultra nosy B&B owner Charlene often finds herself at the wrong end of a knife or gun. You can speculate at guessing the wrong person as guilty of the crime. Always a surprise ending.
