Raina was just a girl when the plague came. She survived. Her parents didn't. Neither did the world. As civilization fell, she took to the ruins of Los Angeles, eating whatever she could catch. After two years alone, she's found and adopted by a fisherman and his wife. Their makeshift family lives a quiet life--until a man named Karslaw sails in from Catalina Island with an army of conquerors. Driven by visions of empire, he executes Raina's new father as a traitor and takes her mother captive. But Karslaw's people aren't the only ones vying for control of the ruined land. As violence wracks the city, Raina joins a rebellion against Karslaw's rule. She will stop at nothing to free her mother--and to have her revenge.

Sometimes I go back through my library to rediscover why I enjoyed the first read which leads to a second reading of the second book now the third book. This one might be my favorite, Raina's savage loyalty and Ness coming into his own along with Walt's keen survival sense keeps me thoroughly engaged. I will withhold my opinion though until I get through the others, there is no stopping now. I will say it is a little hazardous for adequate sleep. I can't put it down at night and wake at 5 am picking up the book instead of going back to sleep.

All three of the Breakers books (and the novella-length Outcome) are expertly-written and imaginative and a lot of fun. You can get the gist of their subject matter from all of the positive reviews for each book, so I'll just offer this: I'm eagerly waiting for the next chapter in the Breakers series, if there is one, and will certainly pay good money to read it. This is definitely not something I can say for most of the free and cheap e-books I read, but this series is really good! When I first saw the premise of the first book, I was hesitant to dig into it. A megavirus kill-off of the world's population, and then a visit from aliens? It seemed a bit forced, merging two very different genre premises together. But Robertson mainly pulls it off, and each of the books have been better than the previous ones. Lots of well-written action, decent character growth, and some nice parallel narratives which intersect in nicely-crafted ways. There's a fair amount of violence in all three books, but it's not there to shock or exploit. The author should be commended for his strong female characters, although I'd argue that Raina (one of two main characters in Knifepoint) possesses motivations that tend to the heavily sociopathic, but I do like her internal animism! Also, at some point in this third book, Robertson's tendency to indulge in wry, overly witty dialogue kind of falls away, and I think this story of survival and revenge is stronger for it. The central focus in the books on feudal politics and warfare is also pretty interesting in the context of post-invasion society.

So this is a definite endorsement. I don't write Amazon reviews but I enjoyed the Breakers books enough to do so. Highly recommended for fans of post-apocalyptic fiction and realistic science fiction.

At the beginning of the book, I was thinking that I was going to need to rate this one a bit lower than the previous titles in this series. Unlike BREAKERS and MELTDOWN, this one did NOT grab me from the first minute with the characters. I don't know why, but Raina just didn't interest me as much as the main characters of the previous books. And Walt's re-emergence into the story, along with the tale of his trek back to LA from the top of some Mayan pyramid in Mexico seemed a little more dragged out than the trek in BREAKERS and the opening sequences of MELTDOWN and the novella OUTCOME.

But then it began to click, and I got into this story as much as any of the others, and I ended up really enjoying the story to the point where I couldn't really put it down. I was happy with the conclusion and with how they got there. I found very minor editing errors. (In one place the author refers to Lorna as Raina, and that gave me pause for a second as I reviewed to see if I missed something big - like Walt meeting up with Raina and her crew.) Nothing besides the one referred to that pulled me out of the tale or made me stop and wonder.

So - another five star effort in the BREAKERS series from Edward Robertson, at least in my opinion.

Wow, the Breakers series blows me away. Each story has its own cast of characters all so different and memorable in their own way. Raina is one tough young girl on the verge of womanhood. She lost her family to the virus and had to survive on her own. She competes with wild animals for food scraps until she is found by a couple who take her in. Raina is fairly wild, determined and courageous. She has a penchant for weapons, mainly blades and is not afraid of anyone. She is also fairly adept at finding things, things which other people covet but she has no personal attachment to. She is by far my favourite Breakers character. The way the author has written each of these novels within the same time line, with different characters yet blends their stories together is clever. At the end of each chapter something exciting is about to happen but you have to read another whole chapter regarding the other character before you find out what is about to unfold... Keeps you reading into the wee hours until you cannot keep your eyes open anymore. I hear there will be more Breakers stories, cannot wait to meet more characters from this world. Bring it on!

Book number three of an eight book alien invasion series. I read the well printed and bound POD (print on demand) book. I have decided to order book number four in the series.

It has been five years since the alien invasion started. Their bio-engineered virus killed off 99+% of humanity. Then they landed their half mile wide space-ship in Los Angeles bay which was then destroyed by a group of humans. Now the human survivors and the seven foot tall deaf-mute crablike alien survivors are fighting over who owns the Earth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rainas revenge

***Spoiler alert***

As post-apocalyptic survivor/gang stories goes, this is breath of fresh air. The feral Raina is brilliantly evolved in this story and her brutal determination to wreak vengeance is gripping. Walt returns in this story as a recluse in the jungle brought back to kill left over aliens. For me it was a masterpiece of writing when I got to the part of the book where the two "goody" characters, running in parallel storylines were converging to a single point....on opposing sides. Superb.

I read book 1 but skipped book 2 as I feared the "other perspective" of the same event would fail to deliver as I knew what happened to the alien invasion - lack of suspense suspected. However, I enjoyed the writing of knifepoint so much I will give book2 a go.

I would also like to mention that the number of typos and glaring grammar errors were incredibly few - which for Kindle Sci fi books is a rare thing indeed!

I can't stop picturing Walt being played by James Spader in a future movie. Sorry if that thought is disturbing to you.

I read most of first book and the second, but really hated it. Did not realize it was science fiction. Good writer, though. Although I bought them all, I wont be reading them.

another good book from Edward Robertson. This one's just as good a read as the first two, but maybe a little less clean cut, with more sexual references and the violence a little bit more callous and gory.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breakers series. Great read.

These are an absolutely great series of books. Knifepoint is the best. Very hard to see how to improve on this story. I read this book over a period of two days. I wanted to read it all at once but life got in the way. What with sleep, work and family, I grabbed the chance to read it bit by bit. This I think gave me time to digest the story and imagine where I would take it next, had I written it. Needless to say I wouldn't have made it half as good as it is. The story just grabbed me and I was totally involved with the characters. The plot never came up short; it always delivered a tense and exciting read. The fights were brought to life for me and the title was very justified. Looking forward to the next book in the series. (Soon I hope?)
