In one moment, high school teacher and single mother Brooke Davenport interrupts a vicious assault, saves a young woman’s life, and attracts the attention of a serial killer.

Sixteen years ago, Brooke lost her roommate to a brutal murder. Now she teaches women’s self-defense, still trying to heal from the guilt and grief that plague her. Convinced the predator knows his victims and is stalking his prey online, she is determined to find him before he strikes again. Her brother’s friend, Luke has the computer expertise to help. But Brooke’s unexpected desire for Luke complicates her investigation, and her fixation with the case provokes a deadly reaction from the killer.

Injured in terrorist bombing overseas, computer expert Luke Holloway is still haunted by flashbacks of his young assistant’s death in the explosion. But Luke can’t refuse the request of a deployed friend to look after his sister, Brooke. Taking on responsibility for Brooke’s safety threatens Luke’s tenuous recovery, especially after he develops feelings for her that transcend a promise to a friend. When Brooke saves a young girl from a brutal assault and becomes a killer’s obsession, Luke vows to protect her at all costs.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Leigh hammers home the danger of daily routines posted on social media in this well-crafted romantic thriller. A sadistic serial killer stalks Madison Thorpe, whose social media updates tell him just where she’ll be when. As he’s throttling her, she screams. High school math teacher and women's self-defense instructor Brooke Davenport hears the cry and dashes in to save Madison. The attacker gets away and begins to make plans for both Madison and Brooke. Internet security specialist Luke Holloway, who had a crush on Brooke in high school, has spent three months recovering from being injured in a terrorist blast that killed his assistant. He vows to protect Brooke from danger, and their romance evolves quickly while the killer increases his threats. Leigh (She Can Tell) skillfully leads the reader down several red-herring paths, and the tension ratchets up as the pages turn. This is one to read with the light on. (Sept.)

This was an excellent read. It was a perfect blend of well written tense scenes and personal touches throughout. The sex between the two main characters didn’t hurt either. ☺️

This is a pretty good story. I liked all the characters and it was good to know that some of the past characters were in this story, as well. The antagonist in this story is seriously sick and it was difficult to read that part of the story. Still, this is a great book in this series. I did figure out who it was.

"She Can Scream" is the third novel in the "She Can..." series, a novel - in my opinion - was a hell of a lot better than the second one, "She Can Tell." Melinda Leigh does not disappoint with this one as it's a well-developed premise full of suspense, mystery, and romance. I have to say that unlike so many other novels, I was unable to figure out who the serial killer was and for me that's a big plus. I honestly didn't see that one coming. The two protagonists, Luke and Brooke, are terrific and very likeable characters (even her kids are likeable). The story is written from both Luke's and Brooke's POV which I always prefer and enjoy as it gives the reader a chance to read about the hero's feelings for the heroine, instead of just from hers. You can really feel the chemistry building between the two. As much as I liked the story of them both coming together, I found the ending to be a little abrupt, that it wrapped up too quickly. It just didn't feel right. As for the mystery, Leigh does a terrific job building the suspense right from the start keeping you guessing at all turns. The fact that we get to read from the killer's POV makes it feel more real. In the end, besides being an intriguing novel that will suck you in right from the very first page, it's also thought-provoking as it gives the reader a clear insight as to the dangers of the internet. I don't want to spoil it for you so I'll just leave it at that. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. Even though the ending was not to my liking, I still give the novel five stars as I had no clue as to who the serial killer was. Love when this happens.

Brooke is a single mom who teaches self-defense classes in addition to teaching high school. In college her best friend was murdered and since then she’s never truly healed. She lives in the small town she grew up in and wants to keep her children protected. She also tries to educate as many young women as she can about the dangers of the world. When she stops a would be kidnapping (and worse) after a self-defense class, she finds herself thrust into the media spotlight, her name and where she works announced on TV. Her brother is leaving for Afghanistan and not surprisingly is worried about her and her kids so he asks his friend Luke to look out for. Luke is only in town for a week while visiting his grandmother and he’s got plenty of issues of his own after surviving a terrorist attack and dealing with survivor’s guilt.

I really enjoyed this romantic suspense. While I had a couple issues with the plot, overall it was fast paced and the ending was a surprise. I also really liked that there wasn’t gratuitous violence. The chemistry between Luke and Brooke was a slow burn and I loved that this was a relationship between people slightly older than typical romance books. The ending had a great twist that I didn’t see coming and a very satisfying conclusion. When reading I didn’t want to put it down so I definitely recommend this book to fans of romantic suspense. I’ll be checking out more by Melinda Leigh.

Three stars at this point - but pretty much same formula throughout the series. This might be the third book I read. Was reading one of the later books and decided to go back IN CASE there were some background stories involved.
Overall, the writing is pretty good. First story was good, then second as well BUT similar, then third book, etc. Each successive story could be reduced by 50 pages because the same formula is repeated. Example, book one approximately 325pp, so book two can be 275, book three 200-225pp, book four 150-175 and so on.
POTENTIAL SPOILER ALERT***
Basically, a fragile, vulnerable, and somewhat in danger female for one circumstance or another meets up with an otherwise capable but somewhat emotionally cautious/distant/reluctant and maybe injured male. Both have their varying strengths and weaknesses, either inner, hidden, or obvious.
Their proximity produces a reluctant sexual tension that they resist yet fantasize about to a degree, and eventually overcome while battling external danger(s). Bad guys lose, good guys win, and survivors live on together in healthy, emotional, familial bliss.
Change names and some details for the next story.

This is the 3rd book I have read in this series and so far the best.

Brooke is a strong heroine who's focus is to protect woman against violence.

Luke is her brothers best friend.
A geuine block with a beautiful heart.

Brooke saves a young girl from a killer and then becomes a target.

Her wit and smart brain helps find the killer but not before lots of twists.

An amazing read.

The book is addictive and the story is great. I am already waiting for my Kindle to finish downloading the next book. The action and romance is balanced and the book isn't saturated with too much sex ( only 2 scenes). Absolutely worth the time to read. I do have an unanswered question what happened to Mattie?

* SPOILER*
