In the sixth installment in the New York Times bestselling mystery series that the Los Angeles Times called “nothing short of masterful,” Chet and Bernie are handed a hard case in the Big Easy.

Chet and Bernie, the best canine/human P.I. team in the business, encounter a prison work crew that includes Frenchie Boutette, an old pal they sent up the river. Frenchie begs Bernie to go find his brother Ralph, a reclusive inventor who has disappeared—along with his houseboat—from the bayou. Not long after, Bernie fends off a deadly attack from a member of a shadowy gang called the Q’s. The attacker dies without revealing anything.

In bayou country, Chet and Bernie meet the no-good Boutette family and their ancient enemies, the maybe-even-worse Robideaus. At first it looks like Ralph’s disappearance is tied to a dispute between the two families over a load of stolen shrimp. But Chet turns up a buried clue that sends them in a new and dangerous direction involving the oil business. The more they find out about Ralph and what he knew, the less their chances of surviving to do anything about it. Now they’re up against Big Oil, shadowy black ops figures, and the Q’s—plus Iko, a legendary bayou gator with a big appetite…

A top-notch addition to the “deliciously addictive” (
Publishers Weekly) series, The Sound and the Furry is an irresistibly suspenseful and humorous read that will keep you begging for more.

If you are a dog-lover and like a good detective story - then you will adore Chet and Bernie. Sometimes I laugh so hard I snort. The way Chet, the dog, describes the human world through his perspective is priceless. Highly recommend.

This is a story of a PI Bernie and his side kick Chet a very large dog. Chet tells the story from a dog's perspective and it truly is laugh out loud funny in so many places, I had tears running down my face. It has a good plot and a good mystery. The characters are brought to life and you can see it all happening. I have to say there is some profanity, not much so it didn't bother me I just jumped over to the next word.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's like reading a mystery with humor and suspense for when Chet figures out something he can't always convey it to Bernie and you have to wait until Bernie figures it out. I wish they were all Kindle unlimited for I read them on my kindle especially when I need a fast pick me up.

Loved this book - it was funny and touching, which is unusual for a detective story. I actually like having Chet the dog as narrator. Seemed gimmicky but it really works. I really like the characters: not just Chet and Bernie, but all the others as well. Somehow, whether they’re the bad guys or not, they’re pretty likable! I got this on sale, so now I have to go back and start with book 1. Such a burden - lol.

Spencer Quinn does a great job of writing in dog! He captures the canine joy of living in the moment and not worrying about the past or the future! Thanks for the frisky romp with Chet!

This sixth mystery in the Chet & Bernie series takes place in the Louisiana bayou where they are searching for Ralph Boutette, a missing member of a family with which Chet and Bernie have had previous contact. I’ve read and loved all the books in the series, and I picked this one up late at night when I knew I had only a few minutes to start it. Within the first few pages, Chet’s attitude toward life had become infectious and I went to bed with a smile and lightness of spirit. The only thing that kept me from reading the book in one sitting was the desire to live in Chet’s world a bit longer.

The Louisiana setting provides great opportunity for Chet to encounter previously unknown challenges such as fishing nets that seem animated and intent upon pulling him toward the bottom of the ocean, the ocean itself extending from the bayou, and an alligator living in that bayou. As always, Chet the Jet comes through adversity with flying colors, or at least that’s how he remembers it. Chet remains a very positive guy, with just a dash of introspection. His understanding of himself goes only so deep, however, and more often than not is pleasantly humorous. As Chet and Bernie are flying down the highway, Chet is feeling decidedly undisturbed by events in the plot that have Bernie wondering about wishful thinking. “A puzzler. Was there a kind of thinking that wasn’t wishful? I found myself…wishing the answer would come to me, and began to feel vaguely disturbed after all.”

In addition to a possible kidnapping, the plot involves a shrimp heist, a family feud, drug dealers, and an oil drilling company’s perfidy. How they all fit together is part of the fun of the book, so I won’t spoil it. With the book being told from Chet’s perspective, the sensory descriptions place the reader right into the location. The smells and sounds, and to a lesser extent the sights, of the landscape bring it to life. Chet’s character is the most thoroughly developed even if it is quite straightforward, and through the device of having Chet experience confusion at other characters’ interactions with Bernie, Bernie’s character is more nuanced than it would be if seen only through the lens of Chet’s adoration. The plot is complex and twisty, but Chet and Bernie persevere through it all, overcoming odds and perps, to solve the case.

This is a great series with each book building on the previous one. However, Quinn makes it possible for the new reader to jump right in with any book. THE SOUND AND THE FURRY would be a great place to start if you haven’t met Chet’s and Bernie’s acquaintance yet. I imagine that once having met them, you’ll want to join them on all their other adventures.

I could hardly wait for this book, as I like a light read and can imagine Chet's thoughts and observations, but I was disappointed. Chet does and says all the things he's "said" before. The plot is really good and the New Orleans setting is a nice change, but how does Bernie know so much about that area of the country? How could Chet possibly swim all that way encumbered as he was? How can Bernie be so stupid as not to sense, see, hear culprits about to take him out? This book seems to have been written in a hurry, maybe to please the C & B fans clamoring for more. It drags along at the start, teases us with the girlfriend (who also seems unrealistic in her response to Bernie's antics), and the ending is too swift with things left hanging. I really grew to like this series and hope for more, but the author needs to develop his characters and go deeper with his plots. How about letting the reader in on some of Chet's musings, what about developing and filling us in on all of those jobs that Chet & Bernie have done in the past, which are alluded to... How could Bernie have so many jobs and still be dead broke? As a West Point grad and a man with significant other experiences he sure comes across as pretty dumb. Also, I'm really tired of reading about Bernie's stupid tries at the business world. Drop the Hawaiian pants and pawning of family heirlooms. The author should get to work and develop these stories into a treat, not a repeat. He's on to something good here, I just hope that he doesn't drop the ball!
