Alanna Knight MBE was born on Tyneside of Scots-Irish parentage. Her first award-winning novel 'Legend of the Loch' was published in 1969 and she has written more than sixty novels (including sixteen in the acclaimed Inspector Faro series and seven featuring his daughter Rose McQuinn). In an impressive writing career spanning over forty years she began with historical novels and in 1988 launched into historical crime with Inspector Faro and his daughter Rose. All are available as e-books.

She also wrote a series of books about Tam Eildor, a time-travelling detective, and Alanna was a life-long fan and an authority on Robert Louis Stevenson. In ‘A Violent Passion’ she wrote about his marriage to Fanny Osbourne. This is also available in e-books.

Alanna lived in Edinburgh, beneath Arthur’s Seat, in the dramatic surroundings of Scottish history. A founding member and Honorary President of the Scottish Association of Writers and the Edinburgh Writers’ Club and member of Crime writers’ Association, she enjoyed researching her books, loved travelling, walking, painting and talking to readers in libraries.

In 2014 she was awarded an MBE for services to literature.

She died in December 2020 still writing in her 97th year, and her final novel, Murder at the World’s Edge, was published in 2021.

Her books, also in large print and audio, are amongst the most borrowed.

Praise from Ian Rankin: ‘Alanna Knight could hardly be better with a crime novelist's insight into motive and aftermath.’

This story is fascinating, wedding historical fiction with an interesting mystery, Inspector Faro proving an intriguing character whom I found more fun to read about that the great Holmes.
And the author artfully blends this with a treatise on the home life of Faro, and the sacrifices made there in order that he give proper attention to the job, even when it conflicts with times intended for enjoyment of and with loved ones.
Furthermore, this particular story raises questions disturbing to proponents of the hierarchical government of the United Kingdom, questions that have potential of shattering the legitimacy of that system (certainly not today with DNA tracking, but undeniably for the times in which the story is set).
You'll find this story a fascinating treatise, and will thoroughly enjoy the characters. Surprisingly, Ms Knight actually will have you saying, "I wonder if…" regarding the mystery Inspector Faro attempts to solve. Charming & intriguing plot, delightful characters.

While investigating the death of a man who has fallen from a castle wall, Inspector Faro soon finds himself involved in much more than a simple murder investigation. Events of the near and distant past arise which may have a bearing on the case. One learns a bit about Mary Queen of Scots and political intrigues of that time which may have a profound effect on the present. It all makes for a very interesting and captivating story.

The dialogue, interesting characters and scenic descriptions are very well done to keep the reader's interest. Inspector Faro does a marvelous job looking into the many and varied aspects of the case while trying to enjoy a bit of domestic bliss with his visiting mother and daughters. This and other subplots add much to the enjoyment of the book. Like another reviewer I was less than satisfied with the ending. Still, I am looking forward to book 3 in the series.

I like the series about Jeremy Faro's daughter, Rose, better.

Hi, it's Liz Dineen. Don't you recall I was the one that received that book in such unbelievably gnarled condition it was laughable? It was totally the post office's fault. It was so hysterically mangled I actually emailed pics to you. You were great on the phone and promptly funded my money without hesitation. I could have been making the whole thing up. I did send the pics but that was after I spoke to a helpful woman there. I don't even know if you ever viewed the pics. The point is, thanks a lot and I look forward to purchasing from you in the future. Bad post office!

I really enjoy this series, set in Scotland in the time of the good Quenn Victoria. Inspector Faro's mother and daughters have some to visit, while the intrepid detective is solving yet another murder. This mystery delves back into history around Mary Queen of Scots and her tragic life mixed with some intrigue. I found that very interesting. And rather than just see Faro in his element, I enjoy seeing his life as a family man, as well; brings some depth to him that builds out his character. I guessed who dunnit but didn't really care as I enjoyed the ambiance and the characters. I will continue reading this series.

Great book. I love a good detective story and if it's placed in 19th century England, Ireland, or Scotland, it's that much better. This series of Alanna Knight books is keeping me busy - I always research words or phases I haven't heard before and I google locations in the books so I can get a better feel for the era.

Again, the author has produced a very entertaining story that keeps the reader "hooked" and guessing, running through the countryside with Inspector Faro. The clues provided help a detail-oriented reader (like me) solve the mystery along with the protagonists. I look forward to the next installment in this series.

This story puts you in the past to know a secret of the British Monarchy. Is it true? Could it be true? Good historical fiction. Made me think of my Scottish ancestry

4.0 out of 5 stars Geschichtskrimi
Reviewed in Germany on August 9, 2015

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, let down by unsatisfactory ending
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 5, 2011
This is the second book in the Inspector Faro series. The book description doesn't make it clear that it's the second, and having just read the first, I had to guess which came next. Fortunately, I guessed right.

Like 'Enter The Second Murderer', 'Blood Line' is smoothly written, with an authentic-feeling Victorian background.

However, I feel that the book description ('Who was King James?') is inappropriate because that's not the book's main plot.

The ending was highly unsatisfactory on several levels. I don't want to give away how the book ends, but it was seriously frustrating. I believe that many lovers of mystery fiction will be at least as annoyed as I was.

3.0 out of 5 stars A complex story

A complicated tale including facts about the death of Faro's father. Terrorist are killing people involved with finds at Edinburgh castle. There is a twist at the end that could leave a feeling of unease.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Intriguing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 14, 2013
Although this book is only 190 pages, there is a lot going on in it for the reader to enjoy and hold one's attention. I found the tale regarding Queen Mary's baby very intriguing and very well written into the overall story. I have to agree with previous reviewers that the ending was a bit disappointing, but if you think about it, it's no more different than any other cover up of the times we live in now. Don't worry reader, I haven't given away anything untoward.

It is nice to see Faro's family in this novel, and I hope we see more of them in the future.

Good page turner. Would recommend.

I have enjoyed reading this book it may be a little old fashioned, but what is wrong in that when it is well written.
