Sam Gardner has been pastor of Hope Friends Meeting for just four months when ninety-eight-year-old member Olive Charles passes away. What's more shocking news is that Olive has left her entire estate--worth nearly one million dollars--to the meeting. At first the gift sounds to Sam like a like a godsend. Yet as word of the unexpected windfall spreads, it stirs up a storm of conflicting opinions amongst the church members as to how the money would best be used. And before the estate is even released to the meeting, Olive's estranged niece, Regina Charles, turns up tipsy and furious in Hope and threatens a lawsuit over what she believes is rightfully hers. Although it may be an opportune time to ask for a raise, Sam finds himself questioning his future in Hope while trying to guide his lively congregation and find a peaceful way to deal with Regina.

Review

"Gulley's many fans will enjoy renewing acquaintance with Sam [Gardner], wince at his struggles, and grin at his triumphs, and eagerly turn pages as he makes his way through a maze of decisions and inner turmoil....A worthy and anticipated follow-up to the Harmony series."―Publishers Weekly on A Place Called Hope

"Gentle and humorous."―
Book Page on A Place Called Hope

"Philip Gulley is a Quaker pastor from Indiana with a charming sense of small-town life-and a shrewd sense of life in general...A self-deprecating narrator...he knows how to exaggerate in a witty way."―
The Wall Street Journal

"The biggest collection of crusty, lovable characters since James Herriot settled in Yorkshire."―
Booklist on The Harmony series

"Gulley's work is comparable to Gail Godwin's fiction, Garrison Keillor's storytelling, and Christopher Guest's filmmaking...in a league with Jan Karon's Mitford series."―
Publishers Weekly

SPOILER ALERT!
The reason I selected "Some violence" is because of the somewhat mild thoughts of "violent ways to get rid of certain people."

The reason I selected "Some sexual content" is because there are some sections a person might read into the "thoughts" of Sam Garner, the main character as he has VERY MILD fantasies' of another woman, all due to her hair style.

If you have read the other previous fictional book series by Philip Gulley, you wont be disappointed in "A LESSON IN HOPE". Over all the book is a very funny read in the great humorous way that only Philip Gulley can write.

I cannot read the Hope Series over time, I devoured this book with its quirky characters at one sitting like I have known them all my life.

You can feel each one is based on a real person, which proves what an excellent story teller Phil is as they are all larger than life.

Thank you for another heart warming tale filled with hope.

I love any book by Philip Gulley. The Harmony series was just wonderful and so far this series is just as good. The books are well written, great stories and always a little something to learn thrown in there. Also, the author is very funny. I often laugh out loud. You can't go wrong with this book. I always look for new books by him.

Sam, the main character, and alter ego of author Philip Gulley, is a very human, non-pius middle aged Quaker Pastor who has moved from his small church in Harmony to another small church in Hope Indiana, having a regular membership of about twelve (fewer people than committees)with no shortage of touchy egos. As he is settling into his new duties, one of the non-attending members dies and surprizingly leaves the church about a million dollars in cash and belongings. What happens as they argue about what should be done with so much money, gives the sacastically humourous Gulley much to work with in pointing out the sometimes small mindedness and un-Christian attitudes of church going Christians. Adding to the plot was the fact that Pastor Sam, who truly loved his wife, had a High School grade crush on one of the pretty parishioners, who felt the same about him. And adding to that was the revelation that the Pastor's Brother was moving into a house in the neighborhood with his lady friend, to whom he was not married. Phil Gulley bubbles over with humorous, sardonic and often quite un-pastor-like remarks. A slice of small church life, as it really is, with no holds barred, but with an undercurrent of fellowship - like a family who may squabble but still love, and even like, one another. Probably it will strike a chord with many small church members and pastors. It was a joy to read.

Another sweet read from Philip Gulley. He absolutely takes you into his world. The characters are relatable, and hilarious. I've yet to read a single thing this man has written that hasn't made me smile and or laugh out loud. Love this book. Thank you for another wonderful book. Certainly hope there will be a sequel!

While I enjoy the series, the characters are becoming more and more cynical with a disappointing kind of type casting. The stories have lost some of the sweet innocence that made the first books fun to read.

I had a terrible time finding all of Philip Gulley's books!
They are laugh out loud funny stories about a fictional
pastor and his strange flock at the Friends Meeting of
Harmony, Indiana. Recorded Books has Norman Dietz
recording it. I dare any one to not feel a whole lot better
after reading or hearing Philip Gulley's great stories!

With Pastor Sam in a new congregation, one would think the Fern and Dale craziness from his old church would be over. WRONG! Sam's new flock takes to emailing him , and others and the ideas for spending money they were given are ready to send him to the moon. Naturally the Church Headquarters want their share and poor Sam is trying to navigate the twists and turns of a rather large donation. You will be on the floor laughing at the zany outbursts of his flock, and hopefully he can guide them to a spiritual group decision.
