Bestselling author Philip Gulley offers humorous, small-town storytelling as he follows the foibles and follies of Pastor Sam Gardner.

Thanks to an unexpected windfall, Sam Gardner's congregation (with the exception of a few malcontents) is eager to expand their meetinghouse. But before building can commence, the County Environmental Board and the Department of Natural Resources put the quietus on the plan.

A colony of endangered Indiana bats have made the tree beside the meetinghouse, and the meetinghouse attic, their place of hanging, mating, and living, which poses a big problem for the congregation. Aside from the fact that their fanged visitors are engaging in sinful acts on church property, until these bats leave for hibernation, Hope Friends Meeting is left without a gathering place. And when an over-zealous Leonard Fink takes matters into his own hands, he may even land himself -- and Sam -- in jail.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Gulley's many fans will enjoy renewing acquaintance with Sam [Gardner], wince at his struggles, and grin at his triumphs, and eagerly turn pages as he makes his way through a maze of decisions and inner turmoil....A worthy and anticipated follow-up to the Harmony series."―Publishers Weekly on A Place Called Hope

"Gentle and humorous."―
Book Page on A Place Called Hope

"Philip Gulley is a Quaker pastor from Indiana with a charming sense of small-town life-and a shrewd sense of life in general...A self-deprecating narrator...he knows how to exaggerate in a witty way."―
The Wall Street Journal

"The biggest collection of crusty, lovable characters since James Herriot settled in Yorkshire."―
Booklist on The Harmony series

"Gulley's work is comparable to Gail Godwin's fiction, Garrison Keillor's storytelling, and Christopher Guest's filmmaking...in a league with Jan Karon's Mitford series."―
Publishers Weekly

"Philip Gulley is a beautiful writer."―
Charles Osgood, CBS Sunday Morning

"Gulley's stories get at the heart of the simple joys, stranger-than-fiction humor, and day-to-day drama of small-town life."―

"Some violence" was my answer for the second question because there are some creatures killed; some by accident and others by someone attempting to "save" the church building. They are not graphic descriptions, but still sad. The rest of the book is both funny and sweet. Gulley's ability to put together people who seem intent on doing bizarre things and people who do bizarre things quite by accident created an unusual story with twists and turns galore. I laughed out loud sometimes and shook my head at the bull-headedness of some characters at other times.
Would I recommend it? If you can't cope with the idea that humans in our own stupidity sometimes destroy life, you don't won't to read this. If you recognize that we humans do stupid things, you will find plenty of proof in this novel. I would read it again. I WILL read it again.

This is the 3rd (final?) book in the "Hope" series about events involving the pastor, his family, and the parishioners of the Friends Church in Hope, Indiana. Humorous descriptions of eccentric people and the situations they stumble into. Fun & easy reading, but I guarantee you'll recognize your family & friends - if not yourself - in these characters!

Philip Gully has done it again. The antics of the citizens of Hope are hilarious. The protagonist, Sam, and the people of the church he leads are believable and entertaining at the same time. Anyone who has lived in a small town can relate to the characters and how they interact.

What a lovely book! Mr Gulley has kept me laughing non stop as I read A Gathering in Hope. This is the third novel in his Hope trilogy. The pastor of a small Quaker meeting in Hope, Indiana, is a delightful man who has his hands full with this flock. His mind wanders constantly through the "what ifs" of his congregation's antics. If you are looking for a feel good read, this is it!

Philip Gulley never disappoints. I have been a fan since I began reading his Harmony series. His fictional characters are so believable it's as if I know each one personally. Laced with humor and honest reflection, A Gathering in Hope (3rd in the series), is like returning home to visit.

Once again, here is another great book by a talented writer. Of course I could be a bit prejudiced because I have known Phil for many years and we even were in high school together. His humor and human insight are very entertaining and refreshing.

I have enjoyed reading the entire series (11 books) a 2nd time through. The 1st time I remember laughing more. This time I was troubled by the cynicism that seemed to present itself … a loss of innocence.
