Barefoot by the Sea is the fourth in the Barefoot Bay series by one of my very favorite authors, Roxanne St. Claire. I love her romantic suspense books and when she released this series of contemporary romance, I was thrilled.

She proved she is equally capable and comfortable writing an exciting, sexy contemporary romance as she is the romantic suspense genre. I think this is evident from her RITA nomination for the first in the series, Barefoot in the Sand. I'm not the only one who loves this series.

This story really tugs at my heartstrings. John and Tessa, each with their own agenda and past to overcome, are well developed characters. St. Claire is a great storyteller and she has a talent for characterization.

Tip: You certainly do not have to read these books in sequence, BUT, if you are like me you will probably want to. Tessa is first introduced in the first book and she is a secondary character in the next two books also. After reading the first three stories I am totally hooked. It's not an easy thing to keep characters, well, in character, through several books. St Claire does just that--Encouraging her readers to become invested in the four friends.

What I really liked:
Her hero, John/Ian is a Thor-like hunk of sexiness, with a scary tattoo inked on his neck (and other places), long hair, and a motorcycle beneath his strong thighs -- he has bad boy written all over him...or does he? There is so much more to this man.

I like that the hero and heroine do not declare their undying love after they have sex one time. How refreshing. How many books have you read that the characters profess their love in only a matter of a few pages after the sex scene? This was much more realistic in my mind.

I love St. Claire's writing--here are a couple examples I highlighted as I read:

"She told her story slowly, as if she were in her garden and could pick only the best words."
And
"She squeezed the shell so hard she thought she heard it crack. But it didn't. The seashell was stronger than that. Only her heart was broken."

Roxanne St Claire gives us an emotional but wonderful story of Tessa Galloway and John Brown.
Tessa is the gardener at he BFF resort. Tessa loves growing things, and is heartbroken that she can't grow, the one thing she wants most; a baby of her own. She is divorced and her ex-husband is remarried and has 2 children. Tessa decides to use a surrogate, with her eggs and the perfect sperm donor. She thinks she has found him, and is ready to have a one stand, until he says no when he learns she wants a child.
John Brown (his name now) has secrets that he cannot reveal to anyone. It is a matter of life and death. He needs a place to live , a job, and to stay out of trouble. He interviews for the chef job at the resort where Tessa works. As Tessa is one of the partners of the resort, she has to interview John. She knows he is hiding something. Can she protect her heart, discover John's secrets, and help him to find a solution? Without giving the ending away, get this book and see if a HEA ending can be had by both parties.
Couldn't put this book down. Thank you Roxanne St Claire for another outstanding book and series!!!

I was eagerly awaiting this novel. In some ways I was also dreading it. Not that it wouldn't be good or fun but that this fabulous series would be over. The book is arranged around the last if the Barefoot Bay heroines. Tess one of the more complex of the friends not seeking romance as much as she is seeking a child and is trying desperately at sperm banks to find ways to conceive after her failed attempts with her now ex-husband left her. Enter John a sexy brooding man with a past so secret he doesn't tell anyone about it. Granted he is in the witness protection program from England and is hiding out in the US. To do that he drops his English accent and invents an entirely new background. He want his twin children back so he needs to find a job and wife to be granted custody. Sadly he has to leave his wife and job as soon as he gets the kids. The trouble not being able to tell anyone about this even his future wife who he going to have to pretend to he unfaithful and take off. John is easy a sexy lovable and charming guy you want to desperately wrap your arms around (and never let go). He loves passionately despite his life one that you can tell he was forced into by things beyond his control. I won't go to deeply in the story is risk of spoiling it. Or rehashing what others have said. I am so happy Barefoot Brides (a trilogy) are coming out next year they were introduced in this book and I can wait to see how their story starts.

I like that Tessa finally got her own HEA, although she went through quite a bit of heartache to get there. I didn’t like the fact that she loathes it when people keep secrets, while all along she’s keeping one herself.

I don’t know why Ian’s children couldn’t have lived with his parents rather than go through all they did, and don’t see why Ian had to go through what he was told he had to in order to get his own children back. That seems a little far-fetched.

Overall, I liked the storyline and look forward to reading more books by this author. Once again, though, a lot of sex and a little bit of bad language.

After reading the second book in this series I didn't want to continue. But being very curious I had to read the other books as well.
The main theme: four women who were friends in college working together to successfully run a resort in Florida and finding their personal happiness is very interesting. But sometimes just do not understand the reasoning and the problems younger women have in finding the right partner.
