About the author
May McGoldrick, Nik James, and Jan Coffey are pen names for USA Today bestselling authors Nikoo Kafi and Jim McGoldrick. Together, they have crafted over fifty fast-paced, conflict-filled historical, contemporary, and Western novels, and two works of nonfiction.
Nikoo’s education and training was in engineering. She worked in robotics and submarine shipbuilding. Before earning a PhD in sixteenth-century Scottish and English literature, Jim pursued a hundred and one jobs, including a decade in submarine construction.
Storytellers at heart, Nikoo and Jim were always searching for careers that gave them time for both family and writing. Then, after thirteen years of marriage, they recognized each other’s creative strengths. Nikoo is all about characters and feeling. Jim is about action and sense of place. Their first attempt in writing fiction together produced their award-winning novel, The Thistle and the Rose. Since then, their stories have touched the hearts and minds of millions of readers all over the world. Their work has been translated into over a dozen languages and counting.
Nikoo and Jim are four-time Rita Finalists and the winners of numerous awards for their writing, including the Daphne DeMaurier Award for Excellence, the Romantic Times Magazine Reviewers’ Choice Award, three NJRW Golden Leaf Awards, two Holt Medallions, and the Connecticut Press Club Award for Best Fiction.
The authors make their home in California.

This was going to be 5 stars for me, but about 3/4 through too much filler for me and it distracted from the flow. Thank goodness it didn't last long. There was a misunderstanding near the end, and I thought here we go, something that is going to last forever. I dislike when that happens, but thankfully not by these author's. All is resolved, with go figure communication - I am sighing now..... love when that happens.
There is passionate lovemaking, mildly descriptive and because I loved both character's from the first, I was almost as excited as they were - ok not quite, but a girl can dream.
There are some twists, that keep you on your toes. Wonderful secondary character's that added more layers of enjoyment. I enjoyed the strength of our h and her spirit. I loved that the H admired that about her and didn't think she should be sitting by the fire sewing.
We get romance that felt right, great HEA, no cliffhanger, and even an epilogue. I would encourage not only getting this story, but Alex's and all his family. I enjoyed that our H father was a kind and caring Laird and taught his son well and still loved his wife after her passing 25 years past.
Not going into the premise, as many have explained it, just what a great feeling you will get reading this story and anything by this pair. (ljb)
I loved the main and secondary characters. That’s one thing this author does well: create characters with lots of layers and relatable humanity. I loved the hero’s father, a kind but strong aging warrior. Both the hero and heroine were complex, both strong and fiercely protective. The heroine has a deep backstory relevant to this story, but the author only revealed a little at a time. I’ll admit that she took so long that I got a little frustrated about what I didn’t know but was crucial to the story.
It was a delight to watch the couple fall for each other when neither believes they have a future. They are excellent people, well-drawn, who deserve to find their forever-love.
One moment in the book did have me groaning, though. Near the end of the book—even though she knows she is in real physical danger—she takes a stupid risk, without even telling anyone she is planning to go away from the castle. As soon as I saw the small child show up, I went, “Uh, oh. Please tell me the author isn’t going to take this easy route.” I swear, I’ve seen it far too often in historical romances where the heroine is easily suckered by the bad guys using a child to draw her out. If I see this weak plot device used again, it will be too soon. I was so disappointed by its use here that it actually detracted from my overall enjoyment of the book.
Apart from these, I am so profoundly sad about Scottish history, so moved about the cruelty with which the English masacred them over the years without any mercy. I feel angry about their greed to take over Scotland killing thousands of people and families. I still cannot accept that when they had the chance to vote their independence fro GB some years ago they rejected it. They should have honored all the deaths and sacrifices made by their ancestors in the quest for FREEDOM! So disappointing!
Colin and Celia were pretty awesome the way they fought for country and king.
Read this story you’ll love it as much as I did.
