Things have changed for Atticus Higginbottom. After the near catastrophe in the Fourth Reality, Tick’s being homeschooled in the fields of science, trying to master the mysterious Chi’karda. But just as he begins to make progress, Mistress Jane reappears, now hideously scarred and much more powerful. She has tapped into the universe’s darkest secret to create the Blade of Shattered Hope, and in her quest to attain a Utopian Reality for the future of mankind, she’s ready to risk billions of lives—including those of Tick’s parents and sisters—to set her plan in motion. Her vengeance knows no bounds and when rumors begin to circulate about the secret scientific experiments taking place at the Factory, Tick and his friends—Sato, Sofia, and Paul—are faced with their most dangerous task yet. And they must not fail; for if they do, the entire universe could cease to exist.

My son loves this series and has read all of the books in the series. It held his interest which is saying something since he is a 13 year old.

Review written by 14 year old girl:

The 13th Reality and the Blade of Shattered Hope by James Dashner was a well written book, and though I really loved to first two, this book was not quite as enjoyable for me. All of James Dashner's new creatures were interesting but startlingly creepy. I am not the kind of girl who appreciates being scared and this book really freaked me out. I am just relieved that I didn't hear it on tape, because I might have actually screamed out loud from the scary music and sound effects. Overall, the whole story was very well written, and I am dying to read the forth book since the book ended on an enormous cliff hanger which has spiked my curiosity.

Atticus Higginbottom is 14 years old and is practically infused with the mysteriously magical Chi'karda. Due to this mostly uncontrollable power he has, his parents have decided to have him tutored at home. He has learned how to gain a little bit of control over this power and he still feels guilt over what he did to Mistress Jane in the 4th reality. Mistress Jane doesn't think that what Tick did to her in the 4th reality was an accident and she blames him for what he did. She has again restarted her quest for a perfect Utopian reality but she has also mastered more Chi'karda then she had before and she is using it to mutate animals and children into vile creatures that will do her bidding in order to maintain a perfect Utopia. Her makings of hideous monstrosities may have succeeded but her slicing of the realities never will. Little does she know that she is about to cause the end of the world. Atticus must stop Jane and convince her to help him. But he must be careful not to upset her because she might kill his family.

I have read many books by James Dashner and I have really enjoyed many of them but between this book, Maze Runner, and Scorch Trials I was pretty terrified. My curiosity caused me to persevere through all the disquieting and spine-chilling scenes only to be rewarded with an exasperating cliff hanger. The way these books were written and the words that are used are well done and the stories were well planned enough to tempt my curiosity to read on. I could not quite appreciate how intensely bloodcurdling it was for me.

I received this book quickly, and it is in excellent shape. I look forward to sharing it with my grandson who has enjoyed the first two of the series.

Liked the series in general. I didn't know what to expect when I first picked up the book, but I felt sucked into the storyline right from the start.

Definitely a good book but I missed a lot of the action and surprise that book two held.
Still a good story and always an unexpected element of surprise to keep you reading. :)

Enjoying the first two books I had high expectations for the third, and was very disapointed. It apperas James Dashner thought of a cool, dramatic sounding title before actually writing the book and had to find a way to somehow tie in the title to the actual story. Ths "sword" as mentioned in title, isn't forshadowed or explained in any way. It tells you what the thing does, but not how it works or why it has a dramatic title. Villians become predictable and cliche, the protaganist ignores the obvious, and unexplained motivation and plot holes are abundant. The only reason I may consider reading the fourth is the half-way decent ending closing in a cliff hanger, which I am expecting to also be unexplained and resolve its way in some stupid manner. Wouldn't come back to this literary garbage. Save yourself the trouble and read the synopsis.
