When former Tokyo police detective Iwata is called back to his homeland, you know it’s not going to be for a run of the mill case.

As with Obregon’s two previous books in the series, Japan is omnipresent and provides mystique and allure throughout. Iwata himself is so well drawn; intelligent, cunning, fallible and sanguine. The story itself incorporates ‘Love Hotels’; anonymous bolt holes for illicit trysts. I dare say such places exist in England but if they do, I am yet to find them described so eloquently in a crime novel.

I am fortunate enough to have been to Tokyo but, as with all the best crime novels, the city you read of here is the insiders’ version.

Truly a book to lose yourself in. Let’s hope that this isn’t the last we see of Iwata and the city that won’t let him go.
