NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY LIBRARY JOURNAL

The bestselling author of such novels as
A Conspiracy of Paper and The Whiskey Rebels continues his masterly run of “atmospheric” (The Washington Post), “page-turning” (The Baltimore Sun), “tremendously smart” (Newsweek) historical thrillers. In The Day of Atonement, David Liss blends meticulous period detail with crackling adventure in the tale of one man’s quest for justice—and retribution.

Sebastião Raposa is only thirteen when his parents are unjustly imprisoned, never to be seen again, and he is forced to flee Portugal lest he too fall victim to the Inquisition. But ten years in exile only serve to whet his appetite for vengeance. Returning at last to Lisbon, in the guise of English businessman Sebastian Foxx, he is no longer a frightened boy but a dangerous man tormented by violent impulses. Haunted by the specter of all he has lost—including his exquisite first love—Foxx is determined to right old wrongs by punishing an unforgivable enemy with unrelenting fury.

Well schooled by his benefactor, the notorious bounty hunter Benjamin Weaver, in the use of wits, fists, and a variety of weapons, Foxx stalks the ruthless Inquisitor priest Pedro Azinheiro. But in a city ruled by terror and treachery, where money and information can buy power and trump any law, no enemy should be underestimated and no ally can be trusted. Having risked everything, and once again under the watchful eye of the Inquisition, Foxx finds his plans unraveling as he becomes drawn into the struggles of old friends—and new enemies—none of whom, like Lisbon itself, are what they seem.

Compelled to play a game of deception and greed, Sebastian Foxx will find himself befriended, betrayed, tempted by desire, and tormented by personal turmoil. And when a twist of fate turns his carefully laid plans to chaos, he will be forced to choose between surrendering to bloodlust or serving the cause of mercy.

The history is well researched and furnishes an excellent portrait of Portugal under the ever-looming shadow of the Inquisition. A compelling story of obsession and revenge, the novel is also ultimately a tale of redemption. Liss fans and aficionados of intelligent, well-written historical fiction will be eager for this title.”

Top reviews from the United States

First of all, David Liss is a marvelous writer. His series of detective stories set in the Netherlands as it became a haven for displaced people of all religions in the 17th Century is wonderful. The reader gets a fascinating history lesson on how these people including Jews, Muslims and members of Protesting Congregations made their way to live in the relative freedom of Holland. The Dutch somehow worked out a way to give these people a place to be safe. Even those persons who finally made their way to what would become Massachusetts began their journey in Holland. The only reason they left was that these English people found that, although their religion was safe, their nationality was getting lost. Along with this enlightening reading are mysteries wrapped around the life of a thief catcher (private detective\policeman) who is Jewish and whose family escaped the Portuguese disaspora. Wonderful reading. "The Day of Atonement" is the most recent of these books. After you finish this one, you can go back and read his earlier books. It will be a treat.

David Liss brings us into the world of Lisbon just prior to the great earthquake. As a history this novel gives us a better sense of the time than an actual history book. I learned a bunch about Portugal in the time that surprised me and enlightened me.
And we get a twisty mystery story as well. Liss gives us a pile of good characters and a very badly damaged, and there for interesting, main character. I very much enjoyed the measured pace and the authentic seeming language and the antique attitudes of the characters.
I hurried to read this novel, flipping the pseudo pages of my Kindle.

Sebastian Foxx, a Portuguese New Christian, returns to Portugal from England, where he had found refuge, to seek revenge for the killing of his family at the hands of the Inquisition. From this point the story twists, turns and winds its way to an ultimately satisfying conclusion. There are double crosses galore and much treachery by old friends as a result of the fear instilled in the people of Lisbon by the Inquisition. At first, Sebastian seems to destroy everything he sets out to save because of this. The book was a great source of entertainment for me as I enjoyed the intrigue, setting and suspense David Liss created. There was plenty of action and sexual tension among the characters as well. The fight scenes were graphically told without being gratuitously grisly. Likewise, descriptions of the Inquisition, its practitioners, practices and methods of interrogation were graphic and appropriately horrifying without making me want to put the book down. I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy historical novels and thrillers.

The plot of this book is correctly summarized in the product description on its Amazon page. However, I must disagree with the glowing reviews that follow the description. This is certainly a readable book (especially when compared with much of modern fiction) but it is not nearly as good as the previous three volumes of the Weaver series Indeed, and as the author states, Weaver rates only a cameo appearance, even though he had a major influence on the development of the protagonist. A few chapters on his life in London following his arrival there at the age of 13 would have been useful and interesting given the author's familiarity with 18th Century London. As it is, we are presented with a protagonist who is bent on revenge and with apparently super human close combat skills, as demonstrated by his ability to kill six armed soldiers in perhaps a minute or so.
It also would have been useful for the author to have given more background and explanation for the Lisbon of the 1750's. For example, why was the Inquisition so powerful there so late in history, what was its relationship with the King and the royal administration? The absence of this kind of information was not so important in the novels set in London and the Netherlands, but the setting of this book is probably less well known to most readers.
In any case, I did not find the protagonist either likable or probable, if anything he seemed at least abnormal, but of course, authors are allowed maladjusted heroes, and in this case without such a psychological profile, there would have not been a story. However, the story includes copious internal monologues to explain the protagonist's actions. These slow down the action, and are not always credible.
Apart from the above, this is a good quasi-historical thriller thanks to the author's literary skills. If not entirely compelling, one does want to know what happens next right down to the unnecessarily abrupt end. If one does not mind the rather high price, this book is worth reading as entertainment and a modicum of education.

Not as good as coffee trader or conspiracy of paper. Very predictable and too much make believe hero stuff. The history was good. The story got silly.

5.0 out of 5 stars and great clouds of smoke and soot lingered in the air

The day of atonement
From our elevated position, Lisbon looked as though it had been blasted by an invading army. Hardly a church or mansion remained whole. Other section s were engulfed in violent flame, and great clouds of smoke and soot lingered in the air. Ironically, to the east the Alfama had taken some damage, but this poorest part of the city was also the best preserved.

I heard nothing but the distant wailing and calling of names and endless barking of dogs, then there was something more, low hissing, It sounded like wind and sand blown hard against wall. Next came the panicked scream thousand of them.
I turned around. The crowd in the streets already far below were pressing back, away from the water.
