Editorial Reviews

Review

A New York Times bestselling series!

Praise for Rise of the Earth Dragon (Dragon Masters #1):

"In this first of the Dragon Masters series, vocabulary is accessible; sentences, paragraphs, and chapters are short; and dialogue moves the story along rapidly. Black-and-white sketch-type drawings add depth to the story and feelings to the characters (both children and dragons). Emergent readers will find happy success here." -- Booklist

"The first of a new series of early chapter books, this entry is sure to attract fans. Brief chapters, large print, lots of action, attractive illustrations in every spread including a maplike panorama, an enviable protagonist -- who wouldn't want to be a Dragon Master? -- all combine to make an entertaining reader. With plenty left to be resolved, the next entry will be eagerly sought after." -- Kirkus Reviews

It is just fun!
This book is amazing! It is almost never that we see books with they/them characters. It is so important for kids to see themselves represented. Not only is it groundbreaking, it is actually good too. I LOVED watching Val grow in her relationship with Fig. I am going to have to get the entire set now.

My 8 year old son is not a big fan of reading. We have been trying to find something he likes to read. We tried this series and he loves it! Doesn't give us such a hard time when we tell him it's time to read. My husband, myself and his grandmother have become hooked on the series while he reads it aloud. We usually only have to help him with new character names or names of new places.

We love this book series, Tracey West has shown inclusivity in one way or another in Dragon Masters. In a made up fantasy world it would be very easy to make all the children look a like, but she doesn’t. There are ethnicities and abilities from all over. Yes, one character uses They/Them pronouns and it’s also done tastefully. Representation matters. It’s important for kids to see themselves OR loved ones in the characters.
The people that highlighted the They/them/their in the book. That’s almost all the uses in the book, the character is mostly referred to as “Val” Val stood up, Val said this, Val did that. The book doesn’t even explain the pronouns, they’re just their existing. That’s for the parent to decide.
Honestly my kiddo didn’t even notice.

The Story it’s self was pretty cute. Drake and Worm are vacationing with Carlo and Lalo. Val is Carlo’s Cousin who is obsessed with Dragons. Val knows more about Dragons then the other Dragon Masters. Queen Sophia needs help at her Castle. The Kids and Diego go and help. They find baby Dragons in the watch tower with no parents. Where are their parents? Who will be the Baby Dragon’s new Dragon Master?
The story is cute.

I love this book series. Ive been reading it to my son for the past week or so. We zoomed through all the books, sometimes reading up to 3 a day. We just got the newest book in two days ago and loved it! I'm so happy to see this author cares about representation. There's a blind dragon master in one of the other books and in this one the dragon master used They/Them pronouns. You honestly can barely notice it and my kid didn't while I read it to him. Afterward we had a good conversation about how everyone uses pronouns and how they work. I think it's good to try and raise your kids to be mindful and considerate of those around them. Anyone who got upset at this author for having ONE book out of 22 in which one person used they/them pronouns are the issue. Not the author.

Tracey West has once again emersed their readers into the wonderful world of dragons. How this author continues to create these adventures is beyond me. Perhaps that's why they are an author and I am not. I tip my hat to them and their bountiful imagination.

My children (6,8) adore this series and literally jump for joy when a new book arrives. While the publisher says they are for early elementary level readers, preschoolers adore having the stories read to them. The 6yo got their PreK3 class hooked on the series.

These are also great, easy, quick reads for adults. Honestly, I'm not certain who enjoys Dragon Masters bedtime stores more, myself or the kids. Most nights it is Mama who first asks if we can read just one more chapter.

My nieces and nephews love the Dragon Masters series! We love all of the different books we have purchased from Author Tracey West. Looking at the comments regarding use of pronouns - I really don't understand it. My nephew has always referred to his sister with her pronouns, as do his children. They don't know any different. He and his wife answer questions that are asked honestly, and they've never known anything different. Starts with the parents, people. Answer questions honestly when asked. If you have issues with something as minor as proper use of pronouns, you are not accepting of others and your children won't be either. Children live what they learn.
Thank you, Tracey West! We love this series and look forward to the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Daughter is an avid reader and has enjoyed this series of books immensely

My daughter started reading this series of books when we discovered them about 4 years ago.
While she has advanced to other higher-level reading in books, she still enjoys this series as a diversion from her other books and I think she is curious to see what's happening next with the characters and story lines.
They hold a child's interest with the drawings of the characters and are good for developing their reading skills and abilities to remember and connect the various plots, sub-plots and stories and to help I would ask her questions about the book.

My five year old loves these. We can't wait for the next one.
What a bizarre fuss over the non-binary character. I was quite pleased to see a non-stereotypical character in the book and my child didn't even notice.
