Julie Carrick Dalton's The Last Beekeeper is a celebration of found family, an exploration of truth versus power, and the triumph of hope in the face of despair.

"Fans of Delia Owens will swoon to find their new favorite author.” (Hank Phillippi Ryan)

It’s been more than a decade since the world has come undone, and Sasha Severn has returned to her childhood home with one goal in mind―find the mythic research her father, the infamous Last Beekeeper, hid before he was incarcerated. There, Sasha is confronted with a group of squatters who have claimed the quiet, idyllic farm as their own. While she initially feels threatened, the group soon becomes her newfound family, offering what she hasn't felt since her father was imprisoned: security and hope. Maybe it's time to forget the family secrets buried on the farm and focus on her future.

But just as she settles into her new life, Sasha witnesses the impossible. She sees a honey bee, presumed extinct. People who claim to see bees are ridiculed and silenced for reasons Sasha doesn't understand, but she can't shake the feeling that this impossible bee is connected to her father's missing research. Fighting to uncover the truth could shatter Sasha's fragile security and threaten the lives of her newfound family―or it could save them all.

Julie Carrick Dalton's
The Last Beekeeper is a celebration of found family, an exploration of truth versus power, and the triumph of hope in the face of despair. It is a meditation on forgiveness and redemption and a reminder to cherish the beauty that still exists in this fragile world.

Review

"Dalton's passion and love for the natural world vibrates gloriously off every page. The Last Beekeeper is not only an intriguing mystery but an important reminder of what we stand to lose." ―Charlotte McConaghy, New York Times bestselling author of Once There Were Wolves

"Dalton's second novel,
The Last Beekeeper, buzzes with as much emotion and urgency as her debut, Waiting for the Night Song. It is so much more than a tale about bees: it's a story about humanity, determination, and honoring the delicate world in which we all live." Sarah Penner, New York Times bestselling author of The Lost Apothecary

"Filled with meditations on the fragile beauty of nature and the power of hope and resilience, this heartfelt novel will keep readers turning the pages late into the night."
―Angie Kim, internationally bestselling author of Miracle Creek

"Julie Carrick Dalton’s
The Last Beekeeper is many novels in one. An intensely personal mystery wrapped in a post-apocalyptic conspiracy thriller. An alarming yet hopeful reflection on the delicate relationship between humans and nature. A tenderly wrought tale of a young woman’s quest for family and community." WBUR (Boston NPR)

"The disappearance of the world’s bees, along with the other pollinating insects, in an ecological disaster dubbed the Great Collapse provides the backdrop for this moving post apocalyptic thriller from Dalton... Dalton does a fine job imbuing all the characters with plausible emotions and reactions to their grim reality. Superior worldbuilding."
Publishers Weekly

"Dalton...weaves a complex family history, internal struggles and ambitions within Sasha that will appeal to anyone who appreciates compelling and creative storytelling."
Bookreporter.com

"Moments of beauty that will seep into your bloodstream... a mesmerizingly original book with such attention to detail that you’ll feel like you could tend a hive or make a stew from dandelion greens....Dalton's world is stunning."
New York Journal of Books

"Dalton weaves an intricate story of friendships carefully made and tended when mere survival would seem to make such bonds impossible. The Last Beekeeper is ingeniously plotted, both clever and tender on every page. I couldn’t put it down."
―Rebecca Scherm, author of A House Between Earth and the Moon

“The Last Beekeeper is a moving novel about how radical hope can be kept alive in the face of personal grief and global loss."
―Matt Bell, author of Appleseed

"Dalton writes with tension and sincerity that will thrill your soul. This wrenching story of the fate of the bees, and of humanity, reads like a thriller; but has the scholarly chops that set it alongside the finest of literary fiction. The Last Beekeeper set my mind buzzing and my heart rending as I tore through the pages to find a flight of hope."
―Pamela Klinger-Horn, Valley Bookseller

"The Last Beekeeper is at once a soaring celebration of resilience and friendship, a lyrical exploration of familial ties, and a heartfelt ode to a quickly disappearing natural world. Gorgeous and urgent. I couldn’t put it down."

Immaculate Writing
Julie Carrick Dalton has a way of writing that wraps you up and soothes you while reading about the worst things that could possibly happen or realistically is happening. What happens when the last bee dies? Who will pollinate the crops, and the flowers? How will this affect our food supply and our way of lives? This book is not all doom and gloom. It is simply a love story. It is a love story about friends, family, lovers, and of course the bees. As the writing unfolds before your eyes you are taken on a journey. Floating through the fields and the forests on a single note of G. This book is told through Little Bee, the Last Beekeepers daughter. It flies between her current age of twenty-three and flashes back to when she was 11 years old. When her entire world escaped out of a door, along with her father, and anyone else she could trust.Sasha has finally decided to come home. Back to the place that has been silently calling for her since she left. She is determined to find her father's old journals about his bees and what she is missing about the events that went down the last few months before her life crumbled from beneath her. She does not know what to expect since she was placed in state care and her father is currently serving prison time. She walks in ready to find the worst and walks into a life of people who turn into her everything. Will she be able to uncover what her father has hidden in the bunker and finally make sense of why he allowed himself to go to jail and leave her behind?Dalton weaves together an immaculate book that will have you wishing you grew up as a beekeeper. The smells, the sweet zing of honey as it touches your tongue, the glorious sound of a single bee, to the hum of an entire hive of bees. The descriptions will transport you to this abandoned farm, where you will meet the most wonderful cast of characters. Each bringing their own unique twist to the story. Building on each other's support and love to build their own hive. Thank you to Julie Carrick Dalton and Forge Books for my gifted copy of this phenomenally important read.

Futuristic what-if and believable story. Julie Carrick Dalton weaves in suspense that moves the story along. Her cast of characters are a strong point!

I LOVED this book. The authors research on bees was amazing. It is such a great story and gives you something to think about regarding our environment and perhaps you could start with one small step.

This was a really unique premise. A near future dystopian where bees are almost extinct and the government is blamed for ignoring all the signs. It shows the devastation that can happen in a world without bees, such as a shortage of food, and people starving. Sasha is "The Last Beekeeper's daughter who spent a few years in the state's juvenile system after her father went to prison for illegal beekeeping and hiding research. He is up for parole, and she heads back to her family farm to dig up the hidden research. Once she gets there, she finds a group of squatters who have taken up home there. She ends up finding something she feels she never had among these people. A sort of found family.

I can definitely appreciate this story as the climate change crisis is very real. This one started out strong and I thought it was well written, but yet at times it was slow moving for me. Unfortunately, I'm in the minority with this one, as so many others are really loving it.

Guilt, regret, blaming others . . . none of that will solve problems. Joining with others, planting and cultivating, restoring nature and loving the beautiful could, and one never knows how far benefits of those healing acts can go. Sasha learns, grows, opens to new possibilities. I wish her, and us, success. May we learn before we reduce our beautiful world to such straits.

This is one of the best books I have ever read! It is a beautiful story, written so beautifully. Love how she shows the connection Sasha has to Nature & the Bees. We all should have the same.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Although I have never been a fan of bees (because I am allergic to their venom). the critical role that they play in the food supply make them very important players in our environment. I wish we could ban the chemicals that harm them,

In this story, I felt that the author gave us a good understanding of what live could be like if we don't try to save the pollinators. Her characters are wonderful....from the ones you love, to the ones you love to hate, including her uncle. Julie Carrick Dalton is a wonderful writer. She leaves you wanting a sequel to see if the world recovers from the Great Collapse. I surely hope so!
