The music. The mix. His life.

"[A] passionate, introspective memoir." ―Publishers Weekly

"Sometimes I think my whole life can be seen through shades of blue..."
―Steve Aoki

Blue is the remarkable story―in pictures and words―of Steve Aoki, the superstar DJ/producer who started his career as a vegan straightedge hardcore music kid hellbent on defying his millionaire father, whose unquenchable thirst to entertain―inherited from his dad, Rocky Aoki, founder of Benihana―led him to global success and two Grammy nominations.

Ranked among the top ten DJs in the world today, Grammy-nominated artist, producer, label head, fashion designer, philanthropist and entrepreneur Steve Aoki is an authentic global trendsetter and tastemaker who has been instrumental in defining contemporary youth culture. Known for his outrageous stage antics (cake throwing, champagne spraying, and the ‘Aoki Jump’) and his endearing personality, Steve is also the brains behind indie record label Dim Mak, which broke acts such as The Kills, Bloc Party, and The Gossip. Dim Mak also put out the first releases by breakout EDM stars The Chainsmokers and The Bloody Beetroots, as well as the early releases for Grammy-nominated artist Iggy Azalea, in addition to EDM star Zedd and electro duo MSTRKFT.

In
Blue, Aoki recounts the epic highs of music festivals, clubs and pool parties around the world, as well as the lows of friendships lost to drugs and alcohol, and his relationship with his flamboyant father. Illustrated with candid photos gathered throughout his life, the book reveals how Aoki became a force of nature as an early social media adopter, helping to turn dance music into the phenomenon it is today. All this, while remaining true to his DIY punk rock principles, which value spontaneity, fun and friendship above all else―demonstrable by the countless cakes he has flung across cities worldwide.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Aoki spins a smart, lively tale of the power of music to connect people with each other. ...[A] passionate, introspective memoir." ―Publishers Weekly

"Aoki has been named as one of the highest paid DJs. Known for his remixes of artists such as Kid Cudi and collaborations with a wide range of musical talents including will.i.am, Afrojack, Iggy Azalea, and Linkin Park, he’s also a Grammy-nominated artist in his own right." ―
Entertainment Weekly

“A compelling memoir of cultural and self-discovery that led to phenomenal success. ...Inspiring.” ―
Booklist

“For over two decades, Aoki has been a disruptive trailblazer in music, fashion and lifestyle. Kicking off his career by providing a platform for bands and throwing rock concerts in his living room, his expansive enterprise has evolved to include a thriving record label, leading apparel brand and celebrated run as one of the most prominent EDM DJ’s in the world.” ―
Forbes

“He's a tastemaker, for real.” ―
Rolling Stone, “50 Most important People in EDM”

Daniel Paisner is one of the busiest collaborators in publishing. He has written over seventy books, on topics ranging from business and sports, to politics and popular culture, including seventeen New York Times best-sellers.

He is the host of the popular podcast "AS TOLD TO: The Ghostwriting Podcast," featuring long-form, free-wheeling conversations with some of publishing's top ghostwriters/collaborators - a production of the Writers Bone Podcast Network and available wherever you get your podcasts.

He is also the author of the new novel, "Balloon Dog," published in June, 2022 by Koehler Books. A darkly comic tale of longing and legacy, "Balloon Dog" tells the story of a brazen art heist gone wrong and prompts readers to consider what what it means to leave a mark and what it takes to be swept up in the same currents that move almost everyone else.

Paisner's work has been profiled in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, ESPN: The Magazine and on National Public Radio. (In a recent New York Magazine article on how to write someone else's memoir, he was referred to as the "most prolific living ghost" - a title that may or may not have been meant as a back-handed compliment.)

He is co-author of best-selling books with tennis champion Serena Williams; NFL great Ray Lewis; Emmy Award-winning baseball analyst and former All-Star pitcher Ron Darling; MSNBC News personality Mika Brzezinski; the late New York City mayor Ed Koch; and, Academy Award-winning actors Denzel Washington, Whoopi Goldberg and Anthony Quinn, among others.

Recent books include "Blue: The Color of Noise," with ground-breaking deejay Steve Aoki; "It's Up To Us," with former Ohio governor John Kasich; and, "Powershift," with FUBU founder and "Shark Tank" co-star Daymond John.

Forthcoming titles include "Reach: Hard Lessons and Learned Truths from a Lifetime in Television," with legendary television producer Arthur Smith; and, "Unforgiving: Lessons from the Fall," with snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis, a two-time Olympic gold medalist.

He has also collaborated on books with former world champion longboard surfer Izzy Paskowitz; bail bondsman Ira Judelson; legendary high school basketball coach Bob Hurley; and, the late Gilbert Gottfried, the brilliantly potty-mouthed comedian.

Over the years, Paisner has worked with dozens of "ordinary" individuals with extraordinary stories to tell, including Krystyna Chiger, whose chronicle of her family's horrific ordeal in a Polish sewer during the German occupation, "The Girl in the Green Sweater," makes an important contribution to the literature of the Holocaust. The story is the basis for the Academy Award-nominated film, "In Darkness," from director Agnieszka Holland.

Perhaps his most notable collaboration has been the best-selling account of a New York City firefighter's epic tour of duty at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, "Last Man Down," written with FDNY Battalion Commander Richard Picciotto. The book was #1 on the London Times best-seller list, and remained a top ten seller in the U.K. for over six months; it reached the #1 spot on the Amazon.com.uk "Hot 100" list.

Paisner has also written several books of his own, including "The Ball: Mark McGwire's 70th Home Run Ball and the Marketing of the American Dream," which was hailed by Amazon editors as one of the best sports books of the year. If you want to really make him happy, consider reading one of his previous novels: "Obit", "Mourning Wood," and "A Single Happened Thing." They're pretty good.

Easy Quick Fun Read
If you're sick and tired of watching the same movies over and over again on the aero-plane, pick up this book for your next flight. This is a quick and fun read, though there are moments where he seems to forget the universe worked in his favor in many ways especially while he was growing up despite being somewhat "self-made" as he describes. Print is large and you'll get to learn about where one of the most popular EDM DJs came from. You'll also read about his connections with the Pickle Patch, Indie rock scene, rock stars, and the man behind the Benihana restaurant chain.

Steve Aoki is one of the most interesting people I have ever heard of. His documentary on Netflix left me in awe on how hard he works for himself and others. He makes goals and crushes them, read this book if you want to be inspired!

I recently became a fan of Steve Aoki after seeing him at a festival and watching "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" on Netflix after seeing him live. I was really inspired by the Netflix documentary so I figured why not get the book so I can get a better understanding of this guy who came from a wealthy family but became successful on his own through hard work and perseverance. Blue was really relatable to me as I was also another Asian American growing up in a predominately white neighborhood having to go through racial discrimination, being bullied and learning to fight back at a young age. There were also other themes in the book that was relatable to me on many personal levels but I think overall, anyone with an interest in an entertaining life story would enjoy this book.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
I have only perused this Book but, I have kind of cheated because, I actually watched a Movie that was made about this guy so, I already knew quite a bit about his Life and simply looked forward to seeing more of it in Print. Even if you know nothing about the Music, or the Sounds he is known for, or don’t like it at all (I’m pretty much in the latter Column, I’m sorry to say), if you open your mind and love to see people do well and Succeed in life then, I can’t suggest this mans Story enough.
He built his world and the Style of “Music” from scratch and it’s a Heart bolstering and Motivational Story to me and even though I don’t personally enjoy listening to it, I found myself Happy to watch how he can make 10’s or 100’s of thousands of people, in a single Concert, be filled with Joy; it’s Amazing! In fact, even if you don’t like Sweets very much, you just might be craving a piece of Cake by the time you’re done reading it. Haha! You need to read it to understand that.
I will definitely refer this Book and I hope you find it as Impressive as I have!

Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
Love this book - my son was so excited when he saw me reading it and grabbed it when I was done.

I think the core of the story is just a human one that everyone can relate to - growing up with a famous parent or very well known wealthy parent can be great and also can have downsides - regardless of who you are and what you end up doing. I loved the stories - finding out about a sister he never knew he had, throwing out the first pitch at a Dodgers' game and what the team really means to Southern California, and his loneliness. His writing is raw and real, and was just a joy to read.
