-Update: you can overcome this by telnetting in as root and using the 'config set wan_endis_rspToPing=0' and 'config commit' commands to turn off ICMP/ping response while still running OpenVPN. Then you need to go back and check the 'disable port scan and DOS protection' box. Of course you have to use the undocumented 'debug.htm' administration page to enable/disable telnet...doing this will stop anonymous ping response as you can verify at grc.com but will still allow OpenVPN. So Netgear knows that leaving this security hole open for OpenVPN is not needed, but they make it difficult to fix. So much for keeping it simple...but I'm still keeping it for the broad and stable (so far) wifi coverage through my house.
2nd Update: Biggest limitation is the guest network. If you turn on 'Access Control' on you main network (limit connections by MAC ID), the same controls apply to guest network. So if you have guests over, or your kids have friends over, you need to add their devices to your access control list. Kind of contrary to the whole idea of an isolated, internet-only guest network. Plus I've read that the guest network is not truly isolated from the main network so protocols like Bonjour or file/printer sharing (maybe ICMP, CSIF or Microsoft's version of SAMBA?) can connect from the guest to the main network but I haven't tested this myself. Orbi Pro versions did get a firmware update to specifically address guest network isolation, but not non-Pro models. You "can" edit iptables to try and fix some of this but that gets extremely technical, way beyond most people. Also you "cannot" change the default admin login ID of "admin". Technically you can with telnet, and I did, but then all change/apply buttons were grayed out so I couldn't change any settings. I read that "admin" is hardcoded into firmware so even if you could get this working, it might cause firmware upgrades to fail or overwrite your settings.
So again, good performance and coverage, very limited tweakability and a couple serious functionality limitations that might keep you from buying this if you care about them specifically. I'm sticking with it because I'm running my guest network on my old router (running dd-wrt configured as a WAP) so I have a true isolated guest network and the other limitations I can live with.
