I read through this book over the course of 2-3 days and the next book over two, staying up way too late.

I love the lessons on character, integrity, truth, mercy, and justice. I love how these books don’t shy away from the reality of evil, its effects on the world, and the pain and brokenness that it causes. It paints evil as evil, with no blurring of the lines, and all things good as lights that pierce the darkness of the evil in this world!

I love all the unexpected twists and turns - things you never saw coming but only serve to enrich the plot.

This is a series I want my own children to read and hope it provokes meaningful and character-building conversations.

The story goes into different directions as the characters take different paths. My simple mind struggled to keep it all straight. But I think I understand what happened in this book. I really enjoyed the story.

My 8-year-old loves these books. As a parent, so do I! I discovered positive reviews on these books from John Lovell (Warrior Poet Society) and gave them a shot. So glad I did! I want to raise strong, resilient kids who know that monsters are real and bad things sometimes happen, but you can always FIGHT BACK. Band together with your family, hold each other close, never give up, and you will find that good can come out of even the darkest hours. Highest possible recommendation. S.D. Smith is a great author and these books should be in every elementary school library.

Overall, this book is outstanding. My favorite book in the series and I can't wait for the fourth installment.

However, I was noticing some serious similarities between this book and The Hunger Games trilogy.
Think about it...
In Ember Rising, the town of Akolan has "Districts" just like The Hunger Games. It has 6, but later, Heather discovers a "revolution" in the 7th district, a district that is kept secret (just like Hunger Games as well...).
Not to mention in Ember Rising, they are also taking children (bunny rabbit children) and they are being fed to Morbin (just like in Hunger Games, children and teens are being taken and forced to fight to the death).
Also, "Heather screamed" seems to be a popular sentence (not just in this book but in the rest of the series as well. Seems a little redundant...)

Besides the similarities between the two series', Ember Rising is a very good book and good storyline. Would recommend. Four Stars!

"some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again." ~C.S. Lewis

When this day comes, I would encourage you to pick up "The Green Ember" series by S. D. Smith: I haven't been able to put it down! Written for ages 9 and above, these stories have it all -- action and adventure, love and family, good vs evil, kings, princes, princesses, usurpers, betrayal, loyalty, and sacrifice. "My place beside you, my blood for yours, till the Green Ember rises, or the end of the world."

Every story has twists and turns, moments when it feels like the bad guys are winning, good will be defeated, and the happy ending will never come. Yet, throughout the entire series is one big theme: HOPE. Those who fight for good are looking forward to the "mended wood". They look forward to a day when the enemy is defeated and all is made new. "Hope for a healing. Work for the mending. Fight for the rising."

If you need something to read with your children, check out this series.

We absolutely LOVE the Green Ember series in our home. The past year we have been slowly working through the books as a part of our read aloud in our homeschool. I love the convos it sparks, particularly around character development and the choices the characters make when under fire. Both the mistakes they make and the courageous decisions they make are great discussion points. It also is a huge bonus that as the oarent, I am very invested in the world created and each rabbit as well! Can't recommend these books enough, although for younger children there are some darker themes and scenes that may be challenging.
