I love the lessons on character, integrity, truth, mercy, and justice. I love how these books don’t shy away from the reality of evil, its effects on the world, and the pain and brokenness that it causes. It paints evil as evil, with no blurring of the lines, and all things good as lights that pierce the darkness of the evil in this world!
I love all the unexpected twists and turns - things you never saw coming but only serve to enrich the plot.
This is a series I want my own children to read and hope it provokes meaningful and character-building conversations.
There are many set-backs, and the road is difficult, but we see the fruition of resistance movements and plans by the freedom fighters that have been in the works for generations.
All of your favorites are back from the previous books.
In this book we go to the First Warren, the site of the evil raptors greatest victory and a site for the Quislings of the bunny world to bow down to their avian masters ... until today.
The book tracks separate personalities throughout the chapters until they all come together for the stunning conclusion and setting up a truly epic third book.
The book is family safe for your middle grader, and the book promotes excellent values.
When the bunnies are down, they pull themselves together and try harder.
No one does this alone, and they all help one another.
There are moments in the book of terrific sacrifice and stunning forgiveness and redemption.
I give this book my highest recommendation.

However, I was noticing some serious similarities between this book and The Hunger Games trilogy.
Think about it...
In Ember Rising, the town of Akolan has "Districts" just like The Hunger Games. It has 6, but later, Heather discovers a "revolution" in the 7th district, a district that is kept secret (just like Hunger Games as well...).
Not to mention in Ember Rising, they are also taking children (bunny rabbit children) and they are being fed to Morbin (just like in Hunger Games, children and teens are being taken and forced to fight to the death).
Also, "Heather screamed" seems to be a popular sentence (not just in this book but in the rest of the series as well. Seems a little redundant...)
Besides the similarities between the two series', Ember Rising is a very good book and good storyline. Would recommend. Four Stars!
When this day comes, I would encourage you to pick up "The Green Ember" series by S. D. Smith: I haven't been able to put it down! Written for ages 9 and above, these stories have it all -- action and adventure, love and family, good vs evil, kings, princes, princesses, usurpers, betrayal, loyalty, and sacrifice. "My place beside you, my blood for yours, till the Green Ember rises, or the end of the world."
Every story has twists and turns, moments when it feels like the bad guys are winning, good will be defeated, and the happy ending will never come. Yet, throughout the entire series is one big theme: HOPE. Those who fight for good are looking forward to the "mended wood". They look forward to a day when the enemy is defeated and all is made new. "Hope for a healing. Work for the mending. Fight for the rising."
If you need something to read with your children, check out this series.
