Child of the Mist (These Highland Hills, Book 1) by master novelist Kathleen Morgan is a well-written story inspired by a true account. She gracefully weaves elements of humor, magic and romantic tensions into this novel. The characters are so personable it pulls you right into their story. Their emotions become your emotions. I found myself laughing, crying, and wanting to warn them both (Neil Campbell and Anne McGregor against the villains. No, I wanted to yell it out, and take those villains and shake some since into them! Those evil doers made me so mad. The plot constantly moves forward (causing me to want to run home from work to read the book). From beginning to end, the twists and turns commanded my rapt attention - thank you, Ms. Morgan! And finally, it is a story that stays with you - the mark of a writer who has mastered their craft. I was sorry to see it end (A great ending it was too), and then I remembered, Oh Ya! I have the second in the saga. Oh Boy!
... I am drawn to Celtic legends and anything Irish or Scottish, and she blends historical events, characters and myths into the whole Highland Hill saga. What an adventure, I feel like I am time traveling, now on to the second book. I have only just begun. Och, those feuding Highlanders!

Kathleen Morgan is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors and Child of the Mist certainly doesn't disappoint.
Set in the 16th century Scotland Highlands, the story opens with a grim scene. That of Naill Campbell watching helplessly as his beloved wife and child die in childbirth. We later learn that it had been their fourth stillborn child.
Then the tale jumps a year to the life of beautiful MacGregor clan heir Anne MacGregor who is known throughout her lands as a healer - though some call her a witch because of her Old Ways of healing.
One evening she is sent to the home of a peasant couple having their first child. While she is attending to the laboring mother, cattle thieves raid the town - men from the hated Campbell clan. When one sees her breath life in to the still young babe, he calls her a witch and wants to kill her. She stands her ground and is then released by a kind - yet still hated - Campbell warrior.
Soon the same Campbell man who saved her life - who also happens to be the Campbell clan heir - is captured by the MacGregors. Anne tells her father that the man saved her life and she was honor bound to save his in return. So instead of killing the man, the MacGregor chieftain gives him his daughter - Anne - in an effort to end their decades-long feuding.
Anne and the Campbell heir, who of course of Naill from the first scene, are handfasted. Meaning they are like-married for a year and a day. After that time they may either have a real marriage or they may go their separate ways. Anne doesn't want to be married - let alone to a thieving, murdering man like Naill Campbell (who is called the Wolf). And Naill had only lost his beloved wife a year before and is not ready to commit to another, let alone love her, at all.
Naill and Anne set forth for Campbell land where they face many challenges. One being Naill's handsome cousin Iain, who fancies himself in love with Anne and thinks his cousin is a rake and will treat her poorly. The second - and biggest problem - is that someone on the inside of the Campbell clan has betrayed Naill and wants to see him dead.
Who is the traitor? Naill suspects many. His cousin Iain tops his list because of his affections for his psuedo-bride and Naill is jealous. But his Uncle Duncan would be second in line behind Naill himself for the title of Chieftain. Hugh, a cousin, is also in the heir line-up, as is another cousin, Malcolm. Any one could be working against Naill and trying to claim the Chieftainship for himself.
Of course, many problems arise for our young couple. At first they hate each other. Then of course, they fall in love but their own stubborn prides get in the way and despite loving each other, they do not trust each other. Thrown in the fact that many townspeople, Naill's family included, call Anne a witch, and it's a recipe for a disastrous relationship except for the love the couple have for each other even though they refuse to admit it or do anything about it.

In the end, what will happen? Will Naill discover who the traitor is before he loses not only his life and title, but the woman he has grown to love? Will Anne's homeopathic healing abilities get her arrested for being a witch? And of course, will love prevail and the couple wind up together or will the traitor, Iain's affections and the couple's own differences come between them?

Child of the Mist is a very quick-paced book and a fairly easy read. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to reading more of her series called These Highland Hills. She also as a series called the Brides of Culdee Creek, of which I have read Book 1 and loved.

I give Child of the Mist 4 out of 5 stars and highly recommend the author to anyone who likes romance without the smut. Right now it's FREE for the Kindle (as of 2/6/12), so scoop it up and read it!

Child of the Mist, is a perfect title for Kathleen Morgan's first book of this Scottish Highland Hills trilogy set in the mid 1500s. Plenty of action, adventure, Claymore fighting, and treachery to balance the beautiful highland life and romance of this epic story. Some good moral teaching comes from some of the best of the Campbell family honor. It is presented with just enough Celtic dialect to flavor, like salt on French-fries.

The Campbell clan story is told through 3 books: #1 Child of the Mist, #2 Wings of Morning, and #3 A Fire Within. If you have not read them, begin with the first and be sure to read them all. They truly remind me of a favorite Scottish series author, Diana Gabaldon (Outlander), except this series is equal in pages to only one book of Gabaldon's. Morgan also writes in a way to compel the continuation of reading. It's hard to set the book, or series, down till the end.

The clan consists of Robert (the Campbell, chief) Campbell, father of Niall and Caitlin. His brother Duncan (tanist) raises a son Iain. Sister Lydia has a son Hugh. And then there is Malcolm. Book #1 is Niall's story. Book #2 is Iain. Book #3 is about Caitlin. But the family moves on, and "the Campbell" changes, and other clans interact. There's the MacGregor's, Maclaren's, Drummond's, MacNaghten's and others. Clan chiefs rise and fall. The clan's got some secrets and mysteries as well. Romances defy death and honor. Honor and Christian morals play a part in all of the books. It's a delightful trip by anyone from any clan into Scottish life in the Highland Hills.

There is Campbell clan fighting and even the burning of the "Witch of Glenstrae". But Anne's not the only healer in the highlands. And she does not desire her clan 'obligation'. Ach, the pledging of Anne MacGregor's hand to a Campbell for a feuding truce--never can it work in her heart. Never in her bed. Never...well it's a long, long way to the end of never. Mayhap, just over the next Highland Hill. See? There stands Niall in his braw plaid. Bet ya can't read just one. Best order the trilogy from the start. I recommend it.

The plots in 'Child of the Mist' are fast and gripping. I did feel as if I was part of that story not just reading it. I can hardly wait to start the next story. I'm sure it promises to be another fast moving as this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taming of the Shrew in the Scottish Highlands

"In the harsh Scottish highlands of 1565, superstition and treachery threaten a truce between rival clans. It's a weak truce at first, bound only by an arranged engagement between Anne MacGregor and Niall Campbell - the heirs of the feuding families. While Niall wrestles with his suspicions about a traitor in his clan, Anne's actions do not go unnoticed. And as accusations of witchcraft abound, the strong and sometimes callous Campbell heir must fight for Anne's safety among disconcerted clan members. Meanwhile his own safety in threatened with the ever-present threat of someone who wants him dead. Will Niall discover the traitor's identity in time? Can Anne find a way to fit into her new surroundings? Will the two learn to love each other despite the conflict?"
The Taming of the Shrew set into the Scottish Highlands in the 16th century - more or less. I absolutely loved this book, narration style, plot, characters, dialogues and storyline, everything came together to make this a truly enjoyable read.
I would love to see more of this author, definitely a recommendation from me!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Child of the Mist" - by Kathleen Morgan

This book is a definite "5-star rating" !!! Having read previous novels by Kathleen Morgan, I felt confident to purchase "Child of the Mist" .... and I was NOT disappointed !!!
From the very first page through to the very last ... this story more than held me captive ... could hardly put the book down !
Set in the Scottish Highlands, in the year 1563 -- we are introduced to the hero of the story -- Niall Campbell; and one year later, introduced to the heroine -- Anne MacGregor. Fighting clans these two were. In a time where superstitious beliefs ruled ... and anyone practising 'healing methods' was basically considered to be a witch. But, that couldn't be farther from the truth - of our heroine, Anne.
As the two clans are "trying" to unite and work together ... Niall and Anne are basically forced to become bethrothed through a ceremony of 'handfasting' -- to join the two clans into friendship and trust. Neither wanted this truce !!!
The story/plot thickens starting in the very first chapter, and keeps you on edge throughout the entire book -- never learning until the very end .... "who" the deadly villain is -- causing chaos, havoc, deception, and deaths.
I found this novel to be -- exciting, intriguing, suspenseful, more than captivating, romantic, with even some humour.
My recommendation would be for: young adults through to senior ages. Excellent story, just excellent !!!

This is the first of Kathleen Morgan's books I have read. I could not put it down just had to get to the end. Loved the hero and heroine and the semi hero Iain, story line was so good it wasn't till near the end that I was fully convinced who the villain was. Would have loved for the evil priest to be committed to an insane asylum though. The cruelty of the witch hunts is mind boggling. I look forward to more of Kathleen's books.
