Hi. I'm John Matthews. I've written nearly 200 books over the last 50 years or so. Books about many things. Pirates, King Arthur and the Grail Quest, Faeries, Robin Hood,Spring-Heeled Jack, and many more. I love folklore, history and film and I recently began writing for movies and TV, creating documentaries, TV scripts and motion pictures. I have also created 13 divinatory systems, tarots etc and have worked with some of the finest artists in the world, including Brian Froud, Charles Vess, Will Worthington, Andre Aste, Charles Newington, Yvonne Gilbert and Wil Kinghan. I have also written many books with my partner Caitlin Matthews, with whom I sometimes think I share a brain, and who knows what I'm thinking before I think it. I was going to put a picture of my cat Willow here, but i guess you might rather see me. I recently began to write books for younger readers, including graphic novels and the fabulous StoryWorld series. This year (2018) set the publication of the first in a series of long planned novels about the young King Arthur and his education by Merlin. Its called The Sword of Ice and Fire, the first of a quartet with the overall title Red Dragon Rising. Even after so many books I still felt a real thrill when the author's copies arrived on my desk. Writing so many books has always been hard work and it continues to be so, but I love the act of creation and cannot imagine ever doing anything else. I'm greatful to all the countless people who have read my books, especially those who made my book on Pirates a New York Times best seller in 2006. There are many more books to come, so I hope you'll keep reading, and keep pestering your booksellers to stock them!

"This book sucked me in! When you start reading it, you shrink down to the size of your hand and have to walk through the book, from one portal to another. And you can't get out until you come to the last portal...which is reading the book all the way through. Each word you read glows blue. When all the words are blue, the last portal opens and you're out and done. Until next time! The book is filled with Faerie secrets, but they are so magic, I can't really remember them. The faeries are very realistic, I can tell you that! One looked just like a real one I've seen, so I know the faeries in the book are real ones."
Adults who love colorful, wondrous faeries and clever prose will adore this book. For children (and those young at heart), here is a key to the gate at the bottom of the garden. I (and my son) highly recommend this book. There really is nothing else quite like it!
Yet to be fair this is an excellent children's book and I am talking young elementary school children. The writing is simplistic and cute , perfect appeal for kindergarten through 2and grade. The art work from Brian Froud as awesome as always, and maybe that alone is worth the price of the book. There are some excellent portal drawings which if you meditate on them serious wizard or witch you just might be able to enter the realm of the faeries.
Now the purchase is not a total loss, as you do learn a few things about being able to see faeries. First off always speak in rhymes, faeries love rhymes. The next thing you need to know is that there are no rules when it comes to seeing faeries. The third is thing is slow down and take the time to see faeries, they are everywhere but we are just too rushed to noticed.
The faeries are there, located in those liminal spaces and times. Perhaps at sunset and sunrise trooping to and fro. Check beneath the and in between the leave maybe they are hiding there. Let us not forget that their world occupies the same space as ours. They are tricky little fellows.
