About the Author

Gertrude Chandler Warner grew up in Putnam, Connecticut. She wrote The Boxcar Children because she had always dreamed about what it would be like to live in a caboose or a freight car―just as the Aldens do. When readers asked for more adventures, Warner wrote more books―a total of nineteen in all. After her death, other authors have continued to write stories about Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny Alden, and today The Boxcar Children® series has more than one hundred books.

Gertrude Chandler Warner was born in Putnam, Connecticut, on April 16, 1890, to Edgar and Jane Warner. Her family included a sister, Frances, and a brother, John. From the age of five, she dreamed of becoming an author. She wrote stories for her Grandfather Carpenter, and each Christmas she gave him one of these stories as a gift. Today, Ms. Warner is best remembered as the author of The Boxcar Children Mysteries.

This is a great series that I really enjoying reading with my 2 kids (Aged 6 and 4) and they enjoy it also. You have to make sure that your kids are OK with hearing about some issues in the world without them being sugar coated. The series starts off with the kids explaining that their parents are dead. (Very small spoiler from the first chapter) A woman then tries to keep the older kids to work in her bakery for a bit, and send the youngest one to an orphanage.

After you get past the kids taking car of themselves and not having the greatest means for survival the books are great! The kids get into innocent trouble. It's a wholesome book that kids love to keep reading. I even look forward to our evenings sitting together reading.

This may not be the series for everyone but it's definitely worth giving it a try!

This is the perfect set of readers for the young child who you many not want to expose to the magic element found in lots of other books aimed at earlier independent readers.

At first I worried it would be sad because the boxcar children have lost their parents but they have anything but a sad life. Its full of adventure and deep caring for one another. They manage to be curious and resourceful, kind and gentle.

Buy it, you will be happy you did!
